I think it's pronounced Conzo, but spelled Cuonzo. Heck, it still confuses me too. All I know is dude can coach. I think our boys looked past UGA last week being that they had played so well against the heavyweights and had UCONN on the horizon. And like you said, the media has very good things to say about him. More importantly, "Basketball people" in the know ALL think this dude is gonna be a Rock Star. I think a guy on the radio said if we go 7-5 down the stretch, we will head into the SEC tourney with 16 wins. If that's the case, win 2 in the SEC and I think we could get and NCAA bid with 18 wins. JMO.

I'm not all in until he gets this team up for EVERY game, not just the games against UK, UF and UConn. Some of the bad losses have been inexcusable, and 10 losses on the year is embarrassing given that this team has proven that it can not only beat, but dominate great teams.

lomas98 writes:

Cuonzo certainly isn't one to make a press conference or have people laughing or a buzz around him, but it seems the guy can flat out coach and motivate a team. The players seem to have bought in and are gaining confidence in each game. For as bad as an offensive game they played last week at GA, they still had an opportunity and should have won that game. He is right in that if you can defend at a high level you can still compete and have a chance to win if the offense is sluggish. Just gotta cut down on those unforced turnovers. Hopefully he can recruit on a higher level going forward and I believe that will come. He has had a chance to show what his style of play and program will be about and I think that can be sold to a high school senior or more importantly freshman and sophomores in basketball recruiting. It seems they are in on some better talent for 2013. You can play defense on a high level and not put fear into your kids on the offensive end like Kevin ONeil did. We all loved Pearl because of his personality and that he also won. Winning is the main thing and Cuonzo seems to be on track to do that. We would have thought Pearl was just a circus show if he didn't win games.

I don't think this team has dominated anyone, they have only played up to the competition.

That would put our record at 18-16. I'm positive a 16 loss team has never made the tournament. 8-8 in the SEC isn't going to be good enough considering how we played early in the season.

So are you sorta in? Maybe you are in when they beat UConn but out when lose to GA? I agree the Austin Peay loss was inexcusable. The GA one may be as well considering how well we have played in conference but it was on the road. They have been in every game with the exception of the game at Memphis...I thought that was the only one where the effort was not as good. The other bad losses this year I assume you are talking about Charleston and Oakland? We lost to the same two teams last year and also Charlotte. We couldn't defend our home court last year in conference play and got blown out against Michigan. That was more embarrassing.

He is on the right track. Players just have to perform at a higher level all the time, not just part of the time. If they can't or won't, they need to sit. He will turn these kids into honorable men, and I can't wait till the team is filled with HIS recruits.

There's no pleasing some people.

This is, and was always predicted to be, a rebuilding year after the loss of so many productive players from last year's team. Add to that its now also a transition year with a new coach and staff and playing style. Inconsistency of effort is to be expected in this year, as is a whole host of other problems. It's amazing to me that he's been able to beat or compete with the best teams on his schedule in this transition/rebuilding year. The glass is not only half full, but its filling up even more before our eyes. How bout some recognition for that? Does your boss demand perfection from you?

Most teams in the NCAA play up or down to the competition and Tennessee is no different. Its very hard to get UP for the Austin Peays or Charleston Colleges. Its much easier to get UP for the Kentuckys or Connecticuts. Just remember that the smaller schools get up for Tennessee. For a mid major school to beat an SEC school is a huge win for their program. For an SEC school to beat a small school is expected. The great programs like Kentucky, Uconn, NC, Duke etc. fall on occasion too.

They dominated a 15-4 Florida team, and dominated UK and UConn in long spurts.

Great interview Cuonzo. You are more impressive as we go into the year. Let's see. Losses to APSU, Georgia, well just all those unexpected losses had us a little worried. But I put those losses on a team that hasn't quite learned how to win. They showed great strides with Florida and UConn. The Kentucky loss was actually pretty awesome considering their talent level. Who knows how Calipari can coach because he doesn't seem to keep many players around.lol He had one of the most talented teams ever at Memphis and we still beat him. We beat Stallings twice last year(I know...different team for us and them). UT can upset people. We CAN win tonight IF the team has bought in to the "team concept" on defense and don't throw the ball away. BALL CONTROL! PASSING! GOOD SHOTS!
oh yeah. Defense.

Am I dreaming or is this team 11-10 and 1-3 in conference? That stinks! Especially when you consider we have lost at least 5 very winnable games against teams we are better than. If not for the team being poorly prepared, they beat Oakland, Austin Peay, Charleston, UGA and MSU. And should have beat Memphis the first time too. Some of you people act like we're 16-5 and playing amazing ball, and are destined for the Big Dance.

This is a NCAA tourney team, new coach and all. Anything less is unacceptable!

No matter how great Coach Martin does we ALL need to remember this team is missing key components. Golden is still playing out of position, there is no true back up for him at the point, Tatum has not played to where many thought, although his last game was nice, Hall has improved, but still not where many feel he should be, Maymon had that one dominating game at Maui, has been consistent, but tends to flop on the floor too much. Then there is the Man child himself that has brought it like no other. This team is still very young and growing. Just needs a few more pieces. But folks need to stop acting like Coach has had this team for 3 yrs and they should be ranked. He has a plan, just sit back an watch it work.

absolutenill writes:

We are on the cusp of finding our stride. Mr. Martin is growing with the team and knows the critical defensive strategy is the way to victory. If he can make top athletes believe and convince them that he will place them in a lottery pick position in the NBA this will be a very new and amazing time for the Vols in 2012 and beyond. Let's wait and see where the momentum takes us this year...I think the recruits will follow.

Clem I would not say we dominated UK ever or anyone for that matter. We played well in spurts but dominate? I don't think so. I agree with an earlier poster that said UT has not dominated anyone. This team has not won a road game so I really have limited hopes in that regard going forward. I like the effort but it would be nice to see this team close out a game. Quite frankly we have not closed out anybody this year. The close games we have won have been lost by the other teams more then won by us.

UT was 19-14 last year as a #9 seed.

Alabama State at 17-17 and Arkansas Little Rock at 19-16 were both in the tournament. They were #16 seed play in games, but they still went to the Big Dance.

I love the optimism that you have for the vols thinking that we can go 7-5 the rest of the way to get an At-Large bid to the tournament. That would mean that we would only have to win 1 road game if we continue our good play at home. My Personal opinion is anything more than 3 losses eliminates us from receiving an At-Large bid. I think the goal should be to play one game at a time and stay hot and obtain the automatic berth. NCAA tournament is always the goal, but 7-5 will not cut it.

All in all, I like the direction things are going with this team. I think that we all need to give Golden a chance at the point he is learning. In one recent article he said he looked up to the play of Kemba Walker. I wouldnt say his statistics differ far from the progression of Kemba. Be patient.

Now if we can make a big splash in the 2013 recruiting class. I think the basketball Vols will be back to a consistent top 25 team. The memphis area holds some good targets that I am sure CCM has already been involved in recruiting as well as other viable options.

Go Vols

Yep I agree with this post. I would like to just add this:

This team just needs to keep getting better every day. I love Coach Martin's consistency, work ethic and attitude (He looks like a coach that can build a hard nosed winning program!!!). The players are buying in and will likely become more consistent as we move forward this season.

The Vandy road game will be a big test today. If we find a way to win this game the season may really take off. It would be great if we can get on a little winning streak!!!

No question some of the early losses were difficult for the average fan to take. That is just a part of changing over coaching staffs and philosophies etc. But Noooo many of the fans can’t understand the process that it takes to become a cohesive team and what it take to win consistently at this level…. I call them the microwave TV dinner generation.

Coach Martin is preparing a Thanksgiving Feast!

Go Big Orange!!!

Go Vols

3 losses...that's basically what I'm saying. 7-5 down the stretch, 2-1 in the SEC tourney. Or simply win the SEC tourney. Point is, it's gonna take some work, but the NCAA isn't out of reach.

That thinking right there, is what got our football program into the absolute shambles it is in. That low expectations, moral victory nonsense currently defines our entire athletic department. Get your head out of your backside! This team has the talent to be in the tournament. STOP saying 1-3 in the SEC is a good job! Stop saying 10 losses in 21 games is a good job. I'm so tired of UT fans excusing badness and mediocrity. You're probably the same person who is thrilled when the football team only loses by close margins. Ridiculous!

ClemCash writes:

So they had the talent to dismantle a UF team that went to the Elite 8 last year, and will probably make another deep run this year, and they had the talent to solidly beat a good UConn team, and they had the talent to scare the heck out of UK, and they had the talent to take a pretty darn good Memphis team to double OT, but they don't have the talent to compete in the SEC and in post-season play. Makes perfect sense, I'll temper my expectations and just clap joyfully every time the boys "overachieve". Got it.

No you aren't dreaming, but I think you've forgotten what happened before you went to sleep. This team was left in shambles when Pearl was fired. A team cannot magically turn into a strong team when there was very little talent left over from the previous year. Don't forget we lost a couple of very established players last year and had to start basically over this year as well as a new coaching staff that had to recruit players amid possible NCAA sanctions. SO I guess what I'm saying is that to expect ANY coach to take a program that has been through so much and turn them into a solid NCAA tourney team, is (for a lack of better words)an unrealistic expectation.
