CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — On Feb. 4, 2009, Lane Kiffin stepped to the podium and addressed what would be his only signing class as University of Tennessee football coach.
“Understand that this class is far below the standards that we have here and what we’ll need here in the future,” Kiffin said.
Who knew then just how precise he would be?
Kiffin and his staff of relentless recruiters had two months to scramble and assemble a class, and they were praised for compiling a crop that was strengthened with the late additions of safety Janzen Jackson, all-purpose back David Oku and tailback Bryce Brown, the nation’s No. 1 prospect. Rivals.com ranked Tennessee’s 23 signees 10th in the country, but only eight from that class are still with the program following a string of arrests and academic shortcomings.

Very telling article on the state of our football program. The '09 class looked good on paper but we only have 8 left now 3 years down the road. Add to all of that Coach Fulmer's last class was ranked 35th nationally. Depending on how quickly our new staff can get this team playing together, it may be another 2 or 3 years before we're back in the upper echelon in the SEC.

Ok another article about a former head coach no one really cares about. Just who at all is surprised in how that class turned out?
SummittsCourt writes:
Now you know why the Tennessee Vols have gone 11-14 over the last 2 years. Which in my mind is a lot better than what could have happened without good coaching from Dooley and staff. With the experience level having increased over the last two years and better coaches coming on board there is not doubt in my mind this team will be back to winning soon.
easleychuck writes:
I REALLY do NOT understand why Coach Dooley has not been able to compete for 4 quarters in the SEC. With the cream from Fulmer's 08 class, and the amazing talent that the hypster brougnt in.
Coach really has come explaining to do:)
Go Vols!

Hasn't this article been written more than a few times? And didn't John Adams just write the exact same thing? Do you think these guys talk with one another and then write about it?
givehim6 writes:
Say what you want about Dooley but the guys he brings in my not be the best but thy are keepers.
VolinCalif writes:
Well that's the way of the Morning Star. It falls (Lucifer). So we had a couple of years with only 2 -3 star talent that remained on board. But they are still Vols and baring the second half of a game they have played very well.Pucker up and let the players know we love them win or lose.
VolinCalif writes:
PS which is worse being Band from a bowl or just not playing well enough to get an invite? Recruiting wise I feel the ban is a little better witness USC (W) DD will get us there 9-3 + a bowl win GBO

this is hard to swallow, but kiffen was the only coach worth a damn hired by hammy. sure, he's a self obsessed sleazeball, but there are a bunch of 'em in the hall of fame.

I wish Kiffin was still our coach..at least he was a winner and knew what the h*** he was doing !!!!

I hope they give Dooley another couple of years because this great university needs stability in the football program. With Missouri coming to the East there are not a pushover and Vandy rising we need to get back to being at least second or third best in the east consistently and having the championship run every 3-5 years and we will be fine because the facilities are too good at Tennessee to stay down forever. Remember Paterno and Penn State had 5-6 mediocre seasons before they got back to winning 8-10 games every year

How long do we have to keep reading about Lame Kitten and the Big O? They were only here one year but their legacy appears to last forever.

Once again it does not matter if we have a top five recruiting class under Dooley ... he has no clue how to develop players ...under Kiffin we were crushing Georgia and South Carolina .. Check the scores..if Kiffjn was still here we would be a top ten team !!
orangeman1 writes:
You've got to be kidding. Fans would be ready to run Kiffin out of town by now. Did you not read how his recruiting class turned out so bad. Of course, Kiffin wouldve probably did everything he could to keep a few of those players on the team, but I dont see UT being that much better if Kiffin had stayed. Definitely not UT's image. He was too cocky and his players took on his attitude of disregard for the rules. I am glad Kiffin is gone because I didnt like him or fall for his hype from the beginning. Dooley has done a good job recruiting and building back up depth caused by all the players leaving the program due to coaching changes. Dooley should, and I think he will, win at least 8 games this year and surprise some people.

8 out of the last 10 yrs the #1 rated rivals class has played for the NC within 3 yrs, and 7 of those 8 won the NC. Do the stars count and when do they not count?
You want to talk about misses? Texas has not has an OL drafted since 03 and he was a converted TE. Only 3 DL since 05. Texas
A class is not defined by the top third as just about everyone can pick and secure those guys. The class is distinguished by the last 10/12, and how much they contribute or stay with the program. This is where Saban separates himself from the rest in college fb.
Its a good thing there are schooly limits in place. So many kids want to wear the crimson/white and Saban could sign 40 just as easily as they sign 25 with no drop off. 7 committs already for 2013. RT

Yes, it sort of makes you suspect this story is in a central communal database somewhere available to all sportswriters and all they have to do is touch up the construction and hit the byline button and they've met their deadline.

......if this article does not at least partially explain the mess that Dooley found when he arrived here then you would not accept any explanation no matter what......!
suttree writes:
Had Kiffin stuck around the attrition from the '09 class would not have happened. I hate how Kiffin bolted and as much as anyone but there is absolutely no doubt that he is a superior coach to Dooley. He energized the kids and coached them up (Crompton anyone??). Dooley has done neither and should never have been given a chance at UT. Hamilton should have promoted Kippy Brown and conducted a proper search during 2010. But he didn'tt and here we are . . . quitting against Kentucky.

I cannot believe what I am reading!! DC and I got booted from this site numerous times for trying to tell you Vols about lil Lane. In fact, I created the name lil Lane, and you guys pounded me for it.

january 28, 2056.. stories of Lane Kiffin still making headlines on the UT site... Time to move on . SERIOUSLY!
VolfanClinton writes:
I agree with this comment ... Kiffin is by far a superior "on the field" coach compared to Dooley it's laughable !! As far as "honor " do you not think that all schools with the exception of Vanderbilt bend the rules or right out cheat to win, with Alabama,Florida and Auburn being the worst and because of Kiffin getting secondary rules violations he gets criticized but no NCAA major violations found... In closing give me Kiffin as coach any day over Dooley and that Ky loss !!!!!!

It also might say something about why all of these highly-ranked recruits were still available as late as they were or why the schools some of them were already committed to didn't make more of an effort to retain them. Maybe more discriminating recruiters sensed a lack of intangibles or even of character that belied their on-field performance.

Don't you think that if KNS/GVX was still in love with Kiffin, they would have found a more favorable article to post? Assuming one could be found, of course. The relevance of the article is as background to this year's recruiting, explaining why there is such a lack of numbers and talent even after signing "highly-rated" classes. It also warns against being taken in by flash and hype and recruiting-service ratings in judging how good a class REALLY is.

Aside from the Bama hype that we really don't need on here, you make some good points. The "star" system for rating recruits and classes can be very misleading. Recruiting is indeed the key to long-term success, but only if it is directed toward building a solid overall class rather than getting a few often overly-hyped "headliners" along with a bunch of other guys who can't play at the necessary level.

When so many were touting his smart alec, in-your-face attitude and mouth as exactly what UT needed as the anti-Fulmer, I said that if that is what UT needed, it didn't need me as a fan. I gave up my season tickets that I had held since I graduated from law school in 1980 and quit going to games that I had attended faithfully when in the country since the Vandy game of 1969. His subsequent actions, including his recruiting of highly rated, problem children, has shown that my assessment of him as being a detraction and no asset to the program which I had loved for so long. Dooley has not healed the damage, but at least he is not a jerk.
oldster writes:
Who held the gun to your head and made you read it and comment about it?
oldster writes:
You and I have a different perspective. If I cannot win with class, I would prefer to lose. However, I do not think that class and winning are incompatable. Phillip Fulmer did a pretty good job of it for a pretty long time. And, if the time of such is gone to be replaced by the likes of Kiffin, then I am glad that my time on earth is about gone as well.
oldster writes:
He sure did. He was cheating and bringing in a team which would end up with more members on the FBI's Most Wanted list than the college football Hall of Fame. If you want that, then you must be a New York Yankee fan.
