Lauren Gibson's home run can't save Team USA

Lauren Gibson's biggest game with Team USA couldn't prevent a title-game loss to Japan.

Tennessee's second baseman went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run Monday night but Japan got the win 9-6 in the Canadian Open Fastpitch Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.

It was the first loss for Team USA, which next plays in the ISA XIII Women's World Fastpitch Championships starting July 13 in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

Gibson's home run in the sixth inning tied the game 4-4 but Team USA couldn't hold it, giving up five runs in the eighth.

Gibson also had two singles. She finished the tournament 7-of-14.

My thoughts exactly. This team does not have the experienced pitching past teams have had.

Monica Abbott, Cat Osterman, Jennie Finch - there just isn't an all time great among them right now.

Lauren Gibson is playing some great softball right now and this experience will be very valuable next season.
