— The Southeastern Conference may have a home for traditionalists after all.

SEC athletic directors lobbying to maintain permanent cross-divisional football matchups such as Alabama-Tennessee and Auburn-Georgia feel better about their cause compared to a week ago. League ADs met last Wednesday in Nashville, the site of the SEC women's basketball tournament, to begin discussing football schedules for the 2013 season and beyond, and they will resume talks Wednesday in New Orleans, the site of the men's tournament.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity entered last week's meeting fearing the 14 ADs might vote 10-4 against preserving permanent cross-divisional rivalries due to matchups such as Arkansas-South Carolina and Kentucky-Mississippi State not having the historical punch of Alabama-Tennessee and Auburn-Georgia.

"I do feel better," McGarity said Sunday. "The tone of the conversations that everyone had sort of gave the impression that everyone had a sense, at least the majority had a sense, of liking the rivalry game with an opponent from the opposite division. The tone led us to believe that this has a good opportunity of moving forward."

Do away with the divisions, declare three "rivalries" per team that play every year, play five others every other year and alternate those five with the five you don't every other year. Every team plays every other team every other year. Top two teams go to the SECCG.

Now if we can get our politicians to think outside the box.

I'm all about outside the box, especially if it provides equality. It's not fair for a team to consistently have to play opposing division teams like LSU or Bama every year when another team only has to play UK or Vandy every year. I'm all for doing away with the east/west divisions. "Tradition" has a lot to do with why the rose bowl teams are typically the major road bump for a playoff, or really any improvement to the bowl structure.

This would be an awesome idea except for a lousy NCAA rule that mandates a conference have divisions and have round robin play within the division. It isn't terribly hard to maintain the "cross-division rivalries" with a 12-team conference. Once you start expanding beyond 12 teams, however, it gets trickier. That's how come we are in this mess. Really, the only options are to do away with the Championship game and eliminate the divisions, go to a nine or 10 game SEC schedule, or eliminate the permanent rivalries. If this new "+1" takes effect and mandates only conference champions participate, then how do you determine the conference champion? I mean if the SEC has no CG and determines its champion strictly on the standings, then is that fair if the B1G, PAC12, B12, and ACC all have CG's to determine their champ? I mean theoretically you could have a really weak Michigan team who happens to play in a "weak division" and has two or three losses, but gets hot and wins the B1G CG to get into the +1, while a strong Tennessee team who ends up with one loss, but finishes second in the SEC gets shut out because it didn't have the luxury of winning a division to get to a CG to play its way into the +1. Folks, all of this is going to get pretty complicated before we finally start to see it work out.

Thank goodness they finally saw this option. It is the only way an 8 game schedule would work. I say go to 9 anyway, but 8 with 1 year rotations would work.

Bama UT is in your mind but it hasn't been significant since Stallings left. We creamed them while they were on probation or the coaching carousel and they creamed us when they got off. As early as the game is the last time both team were undefeated going into the game was in the 70's. In those days we would won 4-5 in a row and then they would win 10-11 in a row.
As much as I love the game it is a mental thing an not reality. The colts, steelers and browns moved to the AFC and everybody except the ownere were worried about the impact on rivalries................

THEKIDWISCONSIN writes:

Would I like to still play Bama every year? Sure. Would I miss getting the tar beat out of us every year in that game? No.

A lot of this has to do with age. I'm more of the generation that hates Florida more than Bama. I want a chance to beat Florida every year versus Bama every year.

Here's a crazy thought...more conference games!

I agree! I saw a bowl game where both teams were in home jerseys. As long as the colors aren't the same or real similar, this is an out dated rule in the Hi-Def world.

Sadly, tradition is no longer important for these schools once they look to leave conferences for others. Money is the driving force these days. No Texas/TXAM or Missour/Kansas anymore. Nebraska and Oklahoma is gone too.

You finally showed up after all the BS you spewed in the BB threads. The reason UT fans are laughing at you is you cant get it right, your truly incompetent predictions during the last few weeks proved that your a figment of your own imagination, in fact the best way to tell how a game will go is to just bet against you ! I was at the LSU game this year, drove 600 miles, and watched as Neyland emptied out by the 3rd qtr and our stadium turn into the Tiger den.

Instead of showing some pride and cheering on young players and showing we still supported them, 50,000 fans left their seats and went home to whine and cry.

So now it's come to this: some of you want to stop playing 'Bama because it's too hard. Well, we're gonna have the best QB in the SEC next year and there's no reason we can't beat Florida, Vandy, KY, Mizzou, Miss St., SC, GA, and yes, even mighty Alabama.

So, for all the cynics, stay home. Don't watch the games. And when the Vols start winning again, maybe, just maybe, we'll let you back on the wagon.

Whats funny is that Vandy hasnt beat UT in Football in 7 years and it was almost 20 before that. Also, UT split with Vandy in Mens basketball and UT owned Vandy in Womens basketball. Finally, when Vandy wins a Championship in any of the Big 3 or Womens basketball come back on here and brag. Sad.

Keep thinking creatively folks! But you can always count on the NCAA to put a stop to that.

I think it will go to 16 teams in a year or two and then a 9-game conference slate won't help -- it will be exactly the same as an 8-game schedule with 14 teams. If it goes to 16 I would like to see two Eastern teams like Va. Tech, and Georgia Tech or whoever, and move Missouri to the West where they belong geographically.

Was that you that kept talking about total wins in the "big 3" over and over last year? Isn't it early to start that again? I love how you make up final 4s. There is no such thing in football or baseball. Hockey, yes. So when was the last time Vandy made it to the Frozen 4 huh? I don't really care about hockey but who says what makes the big 3?

Regardless, I give credit where it is due. Vandy has a great baseball program, better than UT right now. Vandy has a solid basketball program. I would say we're even as far as programs go there. I will even give a slight nod to your Commodores on quality of this year's teams since you have had a better overall season to this point. We are closing that gap though and may surpass you this weekend. You can't compare football programs though. Our teams were comparable last year but the programs are not. UT is light years ahead of Vandy even at one of our lowest points.

I would enjoy reading your handicapping info if it were objective but it is not.

Their isnt a final 4 in football or baseball so I don't know what you are talking about. On top of that, we beat you in football, and we just mopped the floor with you in hoops. We ended up with a higher seed in the SEC tourney with a young team. This is the best team Stallings has ever had and.... They still are not that good. I heard you bragging about their preseason #7 ranking. But I've yet to hear why they are currently not ranked. Maybe you should explain why you guys keep suffering early exits from the NCAA tourney each year. As for baseball, don't look in your mirror. If you do, you'll see Dave Serrano getting closer and closer with every blink of your eyes. He's a better coach than Corbin and he will show it. He's a better recruiter than Corbin and he will show it. It's taken your best yrs and UT's worst yrs to even give Vandy a chance at competing. By the way, your football coach and basketball coach are both pr---s and a disgrace. When they have to verbally attack our fan base after losses it makes your entire school, athletic department, and fan base look like a bunch of thumb sucking LOSERS. Kentucky is UT's natural rivalry- for the Beer Barrell(or whatever they call it now), but due to UT's dominance over them its not even thought of as a rival of UT anymore. After last year, it will definitely mean more. Vandy is the instate rival, but likewise hasnt been very competetive. Florida became such a big rival because of having to beat them for the East every year. But the team I like beating the most is Bama. I always like tradition, but lets be honest. A 14 team SEC is all about money, and tradition will go out the window. The only way to keep the UT Bama rivalry going every year would be to deprive fans of other games vs teams like Auburn,LSU, Ark. The way its set up now, playing Home and Away vs the rotating West opponent, it would take 10 years to play other West teams.

With an "East" like this, it would weaken the SEC as a conference (in perception/rankings). How does anyone come out without 1-2 losses every year? Creative and interesting but not realistic.

Ut has not been in a Final Four since 1998 with Fulmer whom you people love to trash, while Vandy had a Final Four last year. Vandy has won a Bowl in the last 5 years, while UT has not. Vandy had 80 wins last year to UT's putrid 56 in the Big Three sports and had more victories in 2 of the 3 sports(basketball and baseball). This year Vandy will have more wins in all three sports. Keep laughing at Vandy as it makes UT fans look ignorant to their current downfall due to no loyalty to 'Vols for Life". Chavis and Sanders got revenge this year, tee martin joined Kiffin, while UT sat home and dreamed of what once was. Now Vandy enjoys laughing at UT.. Hilarious! Enjoy the NIT with MTSU and TN State..Belmont,Vandy and Memphis will lead the state against the Big Boys

Only you would try to gloss over Saturday's significant Vandy loss to the VOLs. Enjoy your year...what have the last 100 yrs been like?

Going to a 9 game schedule would make it possible to see every West team for UT every 3 years. For instance in 2013 Bama-away ,Ark-home,Aub-home. 2016 Bama-home,Ark.-away, Aub.-away. 2014 Bama-home,LSU-away,Miss-away. 2017 Bama-away, LSU-home, Miss.-home. 2015 Bama-away, Tex A&M-home, Miss St-home. 2018 Bama-home, Tex A&M- away, Miss St-away. this way you see every team every 3 years and play all Eastern teams you would have 5 home games one year and the next year 4 home games rotating all the time.

I've heard that idea and like it as a UT fan. Problem with the idea is going to come from schools who have a rival not in the SEC like Georgia/GT - Florida/Florida st - Clemson/S Carolina. Playing a 9 game conference schedule and a good OOC opponent every year will be to tough on those schools and they would more than likely have to end those rivalry games. Also, I dont see UT playing a USC,Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc OOC if that happens cause it will just be too tough.

Yeah I hear ya. I think almost everyone in the conference is our rival being that we have so many border states. But I still think Bama is #1, JMO. I'm only 34 so I understand the Florida hatred, I truly do. But there's something about Bama/Tennessee that still raises the hair on the back of my neck. That is the SINGLE MOST important game each year for me. Kinda funny, you ask my 11 yr old son who UT's #1 rival is, he'll tell you Bama. However, that poor lil' fellas brainwashed. Done had him read Tom Mattingly's Football Vault and everything. Hey...I'm just saying.

Some of you are nothing but cowards and cynics. Scared to play 'Bama? Hate seeing a butt whipping every year so you want to quit? Take your ball and go home?

Like the post dude. It's a shame how spoiled our fan base has become from our 98 championship. Every team goes through a pattern of wins and losses ans bad recruiting classes, and yes even incompetent coaches. The boys come to UT to play for UT, not lame kiffin or derek dooley or any other coach. Granted having nick saban or les miles on our staff would bring in sick recruiting classes. But we dont want to be an nfl factory. we want to compete for sec championships. we have the talent this year to compete for at least the east. Oh and i'm going to go ahead and start the conversation on who we want to be our head coach in case dooley does get fired. I would personally like to see Jim Tressel or Kevin Sumlin or someone like that. GBO and have a good'n.

best qb??
thats laughable.
you forgot about UGA, SC & oh yea...the qb at Bama who has two NC rings. He picked apart the 2nd best defense in the nation and he is coming back loaded with 5* wrs.

Moving Auburn to the east and Mizzou to the west seems like a better choice, but it is a problem with AL-Aub game. My suggestion is to move Auburn AND Alabama to the east and move Vandy to the west along with Mizzou. That way Aub-GA plays every year as well as TN-AL. Ark-MO are together. TN could play Vandy each year as cross divisional rival as well as AL and MSU. I'm sure there are drawbacks with my plan, too, but it seems to have fewer than with Mizzou in the east. Throw stones at my plan if you think of any so I'll know.

Do you think more fans have given up lately becuase they felt the team had also?
Not being sarcastic and agree that some "fans" are only fans if you are winning but heard many saying the players quitting is the reason they lose interest.

Actually, there are many more than " two types of people on this site".

There are people who think Dooley is great.
People who cut him some slack under the circumstances.
People that are undecided.
People that dislike Dooley but only say why, when it is relevant.(These people don't rant because he is our coach this year and if he fails, he will be gone. - no use in beating a dead horse.)
People (like you were accused of being) who will start a Dooley rant even if the conversation is about the weather.
Rival but respectful fans.
Rival and disrespectful fans.
Trolls - Rival fans that pretend to be UT fans.

I'm all for continuing the Bama rivalry. It is the best traditional rivalry we have. Vandy and Kentucky are longer, but Bama is actually a competitive rivalry. If not for the inexplicable 11 seasons between 71 and 81, we'd actually be tied for wins. [Darn 70's]

Go Vols!

Because UT know completely blows Alabama doesn't take them very seriously, it is more like a party game for Alabama where the 3rd string gets some quality playing time while the first string watches them blow Tennessee out. Alabama's rival is Auburn and LSU not Tennessee.
