Cuonzo Martin says 'never anything' to leaving for Illinois

Cuonzo Martin said Wednesday morning he has no plans to leave his position as Tennessee's men's basketball coach for another job.

"We're building something special here,'' Martin said. "I enjoy my job at Tennessee, and I'm looking forward to bigger things next season.''

Martin was linked to the vacant coaching position at Illinois by the Comcast SportsNet Chicago website, which is part of the NBC Sports Network.

"There was never anything to it,'' said Martin, who was recruited by Illinois coming out of Lincoln High School in East St. Louis, Ill.

Martin led the Vols to a 19-15 record and a second-round NIT appearance this season. Tennessee finished second in the SEC with a 10-6 record after losing four starters off last season's team and being picked to finish 11th at the preseason SEC Media Day in October.

Martin is finishing the first year of a five-year contract that pays him $1.3 million annually.

Glad that rumor is finally dead. Like others have already said, though, I think we need to renegotiate his contract and give him top-5 SEC coach money and a steeper buyout to go along with it now. Otherwise we might be hearing his name as a target this time every year when big jobs come open.
Sure it's a bit of a gamble, but another good year on the court and we'll have to renegotiate his contract for more money, anyway - we just won't have the same leverage on including a large buyout.

FYI he finished last in the state of Tennessee..Lost to Memphis twice,Vandy in a blowout, APSU and MTSU. Glad that is all UT expects. Luckily he didnt face Belmont. Both APSU and MTSU were home losses.. The new UT has very low expectations.

Sure there were a few ugly losses this year, but if you can't appreciate what Coach Martin did with so little, you must not be smarter than a 5th grader. I believe continuing on the track they ended on, Tennessee will be a team that other teams really don't want to play.

Kinda funny, I was trying to think of the last time your hoops coach was seriously looked at for a major job...... That would be never. And in case you didn't know, nothing about Vandy is major.

And don't any other program dare inquire about the UT football coach either. He rang up a resounding defeat of Big East power Cincinnati last year as well as kicking the sheet out of SEC doormat Vanderbilt. Cost you 4 mil to get him. Think UT is safe?

After that MTSU performance Monday night at home, I don't see how you can make the statement "Tennessee will be a team that other teams don't want to play" with a straight face. Really?

He said there was nothing to it. 'Nuff said, as far as I'm concerned, and I'm happy.

Outside of a there's-no-Santa-Claus bitter kind of pleasure (and is that actually FUN?), I'm not sure what the haters and naysayers get out of coming on here and trashing the UT b-ball coach.

Sure, some bad things happened. Watching the offense was painful at times. The 15-0 run the other night was ghastly. Losing to APSU, where I work, was bad; I'm loyal, but the Govs were NOT a good team this year.

But they played the other night with their star player needing knee surgery and their other future star a guy who was supposed to be in high school. No matter what the offense was doing, a bunch of guys who were not known for playing defense -- outside of Richardson -- worked their tails off playing D, and that was always impressive to watch. Skyler McBee became an adequate defensive player, for pete's sake!

I'm glad we have Coach Martin, I hope he stays a long time, and I'm sure he's going to get this program to a very good place. And the folks who like to ruin Christmas will have to get their jollies somewhere else.

Still beat your team once, didn't they, boy? And, Brett Maverick of www.brettmavericksports.com, you better enjoy this one year while you can. Vandy went to the tournament this year and UT didn't, but that is a rare anomaly that is unlikely to be repeated any time in the near future. Your team, picked 7th in the preseason with probably its "greatest" team in history, quickly fell out of the rankings and made it to the final 32 in the NCAA. About the best Vandy can do, really.

Can't wait till next year when UT goes back to sweeping Vandy in football and basketball, as is the norm . . .

No, not now. We've been slinging around alot of dough and 5 year contracts on some 'not-so-high-profile proven coaches'. We had a better year than expected, but let's watch for the progression to next year and see if we get some rewards off a team that is expected to be fairly better with practically no graduating and another year of experience under their belt. We were 19-15, not 27-7. And there were times when the oncourt decisions weren't as good as the effort and discipline. No need to go overboard over 1 season.

I would suggest not mentioning his website ever again. He cheats people of their money by falsely claiming that he has any sort of sports knowledge...we dont want to drive up his site's "hits" even through people visiting it out of curiosity.

Brett maverick, aka ProfessionalHandicapper, has made it clear again and again that he is completely ignorant about sports, and the only reason he comes on here making those crazy predictions is to convince people to bet their money through his site (which literally means that those people lose their money). I actually think he should legally be stopped from coming on this site.

I agree with your second statement, but come on, really? Martin easily best coach in state of Tennessee, 19-15 record? Rick Byrd, Kevin Stallings, and Kermit Davis are all better coaches than CCM based on their career records, unless you got orange tinted glasses on.

I am not against CCM. What I am against is ridicious statements like "CCM is easily the best BB coach in Tennessee". That's with a 19-15 record and losses to Memphis(2), MTSU, Vandy and Austin Peay in the state last year. He might become that, but not now, with no stretch of the imagination.

Contrast: Bruce Pearl and Cuonzo Martin.

When Bruce Pearl was mentioned as a possible replacement for Cal at Memphis, he kept mum about it until AFTER he got a big honkin raise and THEN (and only then) said that he had no interest in going to Memphis. For me that was the beginning of the end and certainly the end of the honeymoon if nothing else.

For Martin, the rumor comes out one day and he squashes it the next. Discussion over. (Unless he's like Tommy "pine box" Tuberville, or Nick "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach" Saban and lying through his teeth)

+1 for CCM.

And beat UConn when they were ranked 11th, and Florida twice ranked 7th & 14th, beat Vandy to finish second in the SEC when they were predicted to finish 11th with a bunch of cast offs and non starters. One of those loses to Memphis was a 2OT 2 point game. Granted there is room for improvement, but that will come in the coming years. Bank on it!

Granted, wins and losses may say otherwise, but those coaches didn't have the rebuilding project Coach Martin took over. Remember, this team was supposed to finish 11th and finished second. That's the reason for the optimism, that's the reason to believe Coach Martin is building something great here. Just imagine what can happen with a couple of recruiting classes gets here. Those coaches you mentioned are good coaches, but they don't have championships on their resumes either.

Wouldn't blame the coach if he did take another job the way the team played against MTSU. The team was surprisingly good at times this season, especially on defense.

I stated later he may become the best coach in the state, but clearly not now. This is apples to oranges. Stallings has a SEC 2012 championship.
