FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed safety Josh Bush, one of their sixth-round draft picks, to a four-year contract.
The Jets also signed quarterback Matt Simms, the youngest son of Phil Simms, and offensive lineman Frederick Koloto as undrafted free agents Sunday. Both participated in New York's rookie minicamp this weekend. Offensive lineman Kris O'Dowd was waived.
Bush was signed after the final practice Sunday, his agent Dennis Boyev wrote on Twitter. The former Wake Forest star adds depth to the secondary after playing at both safety and cornerback in college.
Jets coach Rex Ryan was impressed with Simms, who had stints in college at Louisville, El Camino CC and Tennessee. He'll compete with Greg McElroy and G.J. Kinne for the No. 3 job behind Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

I am not a negative guy, but Simms was not even a quality college QB. I always admired his leadership, grit, and toughness, but not his ability. Oh well, like I always say, those guys know a lot more than me.

Congratulations to Simms. He must've really impressed them at their mini camp.

More like daddy made some serious phone calls. That kid couldn't hit a lake if he was standing at the bottom. Just saying.

Being invited to tryout isn't making the roster..I'll be shocked if he's not released during the summer preseason games..At any rate nothing but the best for Matt, he gave his best effort while wearing the orange..Give um H3ll!!

Witch Doctor say good for him. Witch Doctor say only thing to do now is to somehow screw it up for Tebow there like Peyton did in Denver. lol

Good luck to Matt! He was/is a Tennessee Vol! I wish success for him, Crompton, and anyone else who played for the Vols. Really can't understand the negativity on this website!
All Vols - All the Time - Go Big Orange!!!!

No, he hasn't made the roster at this point, but it seems to me that being signed as an undrafted free agent is a little more than being invited to tryout.
10seVol85_Part_Deux writes:
I don't understand either why there seem to be so many people on here who sound like they really hope he doesn't make it. Why would they want him to fail?
For me, any former Vol is somebody I want to see succeed. Besides, every time another Vol makes an NFL roster, it's bragging rights.

If you remember Jon Crompton was drafted and signed a deal and still got cut before the season..But I get your drift, not many people would have thought he would get any offers..

Doubt that would ever happen, but wouldn't that be funny if TWO UT QB's sent Tebow packing?
tovolny writes:
Matt has savvy...Matt has strong arm...Matt is a tough guy...Matt has most of Vol Nation pulling for him...Matt understands his weak points, release, quickness, and reading receivers. Matt has personality...Matt has class. If Matt doesn't make it at QB, Matt can coach. Make it happen Matt...make it happen.

What are the odds of a UT QB who didn't start his senior campaign on a losing team beating out the star QB's of both UF and Bama when they each won national championships? Probably not great but it sure would be fun to see it happen.

Most negative comments (especially ones that make little sense) come from guys that have never worn a jock and probably don't know what one is.

Just a reminder that most QB's enjoy the advantage of having a system that \suits their skills. A good OC will make sure that is happening. Simms never had that advantage. So it is very difficult to rate him other than being tough and a pretty good field general. Don't be surprised if he pans out to be pretty good.

Doggone right he's tough, he took the beating from Ala and LSU twice instead of only playing against our easier opponents like Bray. Also 2 of our best games running the ball were against these top defenses. Unlike Bray when he saw 6 in coverage he would check to the running play and it would be a gain. One was a draw play on 3rd and 14 against Bama that went for 15 and first down probably longest run against Bama all year. He has much more football smarts than Bray, lets hope Bray has matured to take what defense gives him instead of throwing every down no matter what. Good Luck Matt

Pat Ryan sat the bench at UT and played for the Jets as I recall.

I think I'll actually pay attention to the QB battle in NYJ now. At the very least, if Simms makes the roster he'll have sent Alabama's QB McIlroy to the unemployment line. If he could work his way to up-end Tebow, that would absolutely make my day!

glad he got a chance His future is in coaching.

Matt Simms was a far better QB than most here ever gave him credit for being. He had no running game, an offensive line as porous as a screen door on a submarine and only one or two playmaker receivers.
He gave up some bad turnovers but the whole UT team seems to be doing that in the red zone even when he was on the bench.
But he took more pounding than should be allowed by law and got up, dusted himself off and went back the huddle every time.
I wish him luck. He earned every bit of future success he receives.

Agree with John. Simms was better than most on here realize. Some players are better suited for the pro game, and I hope Matt makes out well in the NFL for several years. Good luck to all former Vols!!

He wore Tennessee orange so I wish him all the best of luck in the world.
I'll LMAO if he sends the other QB's packing and takes the 3rd string QB position.
Good luck young man and keep representing Tennessee in a classy manner.
VFL...GBO!!!
