Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — When first asked about the importance of Tennessee and Alabama continuing to play their “Third Saturday in October” football game every year despite the Southeastern Conference’s recent expansion to 14 teams, Dave Hart’s answer couldn’t have been much more direct.

“It’ll be kept. I feel very good about that,” the former Alabama basketball player, Alabama graduate, former Alabama executive director of athletics and current Tennessee athletic director said during an extensive, exclusive interview with govols247 from his office in Knoxville on Tuesday morning.

Even if the SEC dropped the permanent opponent concept, Alabama and Tennessee could still play each other if UT would drop just one of the three annual garbage games (defined as such when I throw the tickets in the trashcan because I can't even give them away), and Alabama would do likewise. Play each other as a non-conference game not counting in the standings. Problem solved. Do it.

We need to drop them from the schedule. Our team cannot compete with them anymore. Especially with a AL pandering head coach and AD who is mailing in the playbook before the game even starts.

Alabama should drop this game. It is meaningless Since Fulmer is gone, this is no longer a serious competitive game for Alabama. Alabama knows they will absolutely thrash and dominate Tennessee and Alabama will an opportunity to play some young players and rest their starters. Alabama is worried about LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Congratulations! You win for the stupidest thing ever typed on this page. Alabama and Tennessee absolutely can never, ever play a non-conference game while they are in the same conference.

Bama always takes this game very seriously. Coach Bryant played with a broken leg in '34 against the Vols. He loved this game and it will never be dropped by the UA admin. Roll Tide and long live one of the greatest games in college fb.

Glass half-full approach says, that is why we play the game. I like our chances against everybody we play next year; our team is growing and getting better. If Dooley shows continued weakness in game day decisions, he will be gone real soon. I hope he gets the job done; our offense will be a powerful force to deal with.

With the way conferences and the world changes literally overnight, we never know what set in stone rivalries can easily be disrupted. We have never thrown out teams such as Vandy and KY whom we have very often beaten in my lifetime. Vandy has beaten us once I can recall and UK twice, yes that includes the one many of you cannot get over last season. But we kept them. So Alabama will not trash this game. Neither will Tennessee but we never know what the next changes will be in collegiate football or the US in general. Meanwhile, this game goes on. Tennessee will win again, just wait and see. That leaves an opening for all you no new nega-Dooleyites to get in your Wed. jollies.

For several years back in the 1970s, Alabama and Ole Miss played a game which did not count in the conference standings. It was in effect played "as a non-conference game" between two SEC teams. So there is precedent. Two SEC teams can in fact play each other and treat it as a non-conference game. It has happened before.

Still fuming that I criticized you for calling JimmyJoe an idiot on the Pat Summitt story? I'm sorry you're upset.

Dooley needs to take this team to the OVC where he could dominate. Wait, Austin Peay in the OVC. Never mind. We have already gotten out butts kicked in basketball and baseball. I can't take another one!

I agree that UT should continue its game with Bama within the SEC each year. To do otherwise, would prove to be to be devastation to fans everywhere.

If tenn does not drop the Ababama game every year, then tenn will will never have a chance at winning the national champion. Ab does not want to loose the easy win and if I was Hart and Doodley who supports Ab, then they can always go back to Ababama.

Hart and doodley and gang needs to go back to Alabama. They will not drop this series as long as Alabama is the team. Probably with Hart and his assistants from Alabama they could be possible sending UT playbook to Alabama every year as far as I know; Of course any body could beat UT without a decent Kicker and punter since Fulmer left. He had loyalty to UT. Was to simple to name him AD. We know pay for it.
