In the wake of a woeful performance Saturday against Troy, Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said he would take a more active role in the defense.

“I'm coming out of the offensive room and putting all my attention on defense,” Dooley said Monday during his weekly news conference.

The Vols (4-5, 0-5 SEC) play Missouri (4-5, 1-5) on Saturday at Neyland Stadium (TV: SEC Network, 12:21 p.m.)

Tennessee allowed 721 yards of total offense to the Trojans in a 55-48 victory last Saturday.

Dooley said defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri might move upstairs to coach from the press box as part of changes in the Vols’ game-day routine.

As for criticism of Sunseri and the defense, Dooley said that comes with the territory.

"Like Bruce Hornsby and the Range, that's just the way it is,” he said.

This defense did not suddenly get bad this past weekend -- it has been bad all season. Dooley's failure to focus more of his attention on the defense prior to now is, in my opinion, nothing short of gross incompetence.

When will all this end?? Dave Hart must be blind another press conference and Dooley is still our coach! It will not get any better until we have a head coach who can beat a top 25 team and a D coordinator who can actually call a Defense and not give up 721yds to a Sun Belt team. PATHETIC!!!

It will all end sooner if TN becomes mathmatically bowl in-eligible. That's why Joker got canned when he did. KY had no shot at a bowl game.

As of right now, TN still has a shot at a bowl, and why risk the revenue (albeit small revenue from a lower tiered bowl game...all revenue helps with the buyouts looming ahead) by firing him mid-season? Doing so would really put a "quitting" mentality into the players. Why would they give their all for a lame duck coach? As of right now, they still have a very small hope that Dooley will be around and bring in yet another new defensive coach.

If Dooley gets bowl eligible this year? He gets canned after the KY game. If he gets eliminated from bowls before year's end?--he gets canned before year's end.

Good decision by the head coach! I think this will work out very well! Should have been done sooner though, like right after Florida! Go POSIVOLS!!! Booo NEGAVOLS!!!!!Let's win out and go Crush another ACC or a Big 10 team in a bowl game! GO VOLS!!

Gives Dooley a chance to look good if the defense shapes up..makes it obvious Sunseri cannot be retained...also may be attempt to end the discussion as to who actually hired Sunseri...everything I see points to this being another decision by Mr. Hart..it sounds to me like Dooley is saying..oh boy..now I have permission to take over the defense...win ..win ..situation...I was thinking UT could not win out..not so sure now..If Bray continues to be a man and don't panic or quit when he is pressured..UT might pull it off...at least it adds some interest....

Not sure what you're referring to about that okemo dude, but whatever....

And, as for a person who likes to tie himself into jesus...you sure do like to mock folks who don't share your same outlook. Is that what jesus would do?

All I offered was a little bit of reasoning as to why Dooley and company hasn't been fired yet. Why not respond to that with some logical explanation of your own?

But you are right in one area...I haven't had lunch yet, and my belly is rumbling!

Sunseri should be canned now and the search for a DC be open. I see no SEC quality on any part of the D. DL looks like they're velcroed to the blockers, LB's have a deer-in-the headlights look on too many plays, and the DB's are out of position and miss tackles when they are there. Did I miss anything?? Oh, one more thing, Bama looks like they really miss Sunseri at outside LB coach.

Won't be much revenue on a lower tier bowl if any. By the time they cover all the expenses, nobody makes money on those. You're lucky if you break even. Whether they make a bowl or not should have no bearing on this decision.

Meineke Car Care Bowl pays out $3.4 million, Music City Bowl pays out $3.6 million. Take the winners share (minus expenses) and maybe net $1 million. It will pay off at least one assistant coach ;)

I think you have been in favor of giving Dooley every chance to complete his contract..am I wrong about this..this decision looks to me like Hart is giving Dooley permission to take over the defense and if it works and they win out..they could justify another year..is that not what you have been calling for..

The big loser in all this is going to be our recruiting. If Dooley stays they will have to fire Sal but noway anybody halfway decent will come as DC with a lame duck coach. It is over they need to do it now. Even if he wins out recruiting is going down. I think at the moment we are near the bottom with our recruiting.

It want help because apathy is taken over many in the VOL nation. If they did that recruiting will go off the bottom of the SEC chart.

Mr. Hart you are officially presiding over one of the worst chapters in Tenn football history. Mr. Cheek you have presided over the last two to three disasters. Where can the fans turn? Where can the kids sacrificing each week turn? Can the UT President step in?

"Thats just the way it is"....in other words CDD has no clue what he (or the defensive staff) is doing, is willing to tell the press and the fans that is there is still NO ACTION.....

2. Most of you all wanted a change. You where not down with 10 win seasons, packed houses, draft picks all over, national relevance and a Hall of Fame Coach. You asked for change now embrace. Oh, and enjoy!!!

Even if this were to work and there is improvement on the defense, why now in game 10 of a 12 game schedule? Why did it take this long? Shouldn't innovation have occured about game 6, I mean our defense has been weak all year long. We've always had a problem with spread-option teams mainly because of our lack of speed. Also, our DL and LB's have trouble shedding blockers and plugging holes.

Mizzou has a good defense. It held the Gators to 14. The Mizzou quarterback came back from an injury and looked good except for the 4 interceptions (yeah, I know that is a BIG exception). Even if he did not have some rust knocked off in that game, that qb, Franklin, will not have to worry about throwing 4 interceptions vs. the Vols as the Vols are never close enough to any received to knock a pass down, much less intercept one. Franklin will have a career game and throw for at least 300 if not 400 yards, Mizzou will score at least 50 points and will defeat UT by a minimum of 3 touchdowns. Hand down your head, coach Dooley. Hand down your head and cry. Hang down you head, coach Dooley, poor boy your going to get fired.
