DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke coach David Cutcliffe says he's staying with the Blue Devils next season.

He was asked Sunday evening about the coaching vacancy at Tennessee. The former Volunteers offensive coordinator and mentor to Peyton Manning said he's "going to be coaching at Duke next year" and that he "can put that to rest, and that's a fact."

Cutcliffe was an assistant to Phil Fulmer at Tennessee from 1982-1998 and again from 2006-07, leaving both times for head coaching jobs. He has led Duke (6-5) to its best season since 1994 and its first bowl game since then.

He withdrew from the Volunteers' previous coaching search in 2010 to stay at Duke. Tennessee hired Derek Dooley, whom they fired earlier Sunday.

Make no mistake about it, he was a great asset during his time with the Vols but with his age and past health problems he just isn't the right man for the job. And neither is Bobby Petrino !!!

Smart man. I'd rather coach Duke in ACC than UT in SEC.

With Cutcliffe's poor health (and the UT program's worse health) it is doubtful he would live long enough to see the Vols back on top in the best football league this side of the NFL.

Cuttliffe would be an excellent choice. Hart should find out what it would take for him to come to UT!

You are right as rain, we don't need Fulmer, Cutcliff and we sure don't need the chief and his prevent defense. We have already been down that road. Ask LSU against Alabama. UT had better get it right this time or this could go on for years.

Duke is a good spot for Cut to coach till he retires. Six wins there gets you an extension and a parade. But during all of this search no matter what you hear, remember the immortal words of Tommy Tuberville: "I'll be staying at Ole Miss." That was two days before he took the Auburn job.

DavidB writes:

No where does it say he was offered the job. Reporters trying to get ahead of the game. My guess they have called several people asking if they are interested in the job. Any smart coach would tell the press they are happy where they are.

I think we would have given our left eye to have Chief running our defense this year...No question about it....thing is...Chief won't come back either...

The story doesn't say who approached Cut. Or was Cut's agent asked? More info please.

Stooley_Dinks writes:

The article does say that Cut was asked about the vacancy, but I do think he should have answered differently. There is a more classy way to address that.

I also think Hart needs to tell the fans that if anyone comes out and says publicly that they are not interested in the job, everyone can be certain that they were not under consideration anyway.

All the reasons they were stuck with ol' orange pants to begin with are still there, only worse, this time around.

All signs point to Joker Phillips or Ron Zook.

Why in heavens name would we want Ron Zook? He's probably been let go more times than George Steinbrenner let Billy Martin go. Don't forget that he has a loyalty problem as we have already experienced.

Say what you want about Cut, but kudos to him for not just using the UT opening to get a pay increase from Duke. How many times did our beloved Pearl do that to us?

Zook has SEC experience, never lost more than 5 games at Florida, never missed a bowl game at UF, and took Illinois to the Rose Bowl!

He'd be a major upgrade!

You can't reject something that was never offered. Just because some reporter asked him doesn't mean that Hart was even considering him. The doomsayers will come out of the woodwork in droves! No matter who gets hired, someone will have a problem with it.

The Kinko's is closed and Zook is a no go! No to Cut as well. He was great OC but has done little to prove he is what we need as a head coach!

Shocker. Why on earth would one want to stay at a program that's thankful to have you, football takes a backseat to basketball and success is measured in treading water in the Win and Lost column..? Cut knows the deal at Tennessee and he's not willing to jeopadize his life of cush for a possible rocky Rocky Top. Don't blame him. We need to find a 'Proven Somebody' that knows W's and is gonna play within the boundries set up by the NCAA. Who that is, I don't know but out there in America is a winner that's making some HC look better than he is. Who is it..? That's where I'm willing to take a chance 'cause there ain't enough Saban's to go around.

That is smart. Why go to a school with out of touch expectations and a place that fired his mentor and Hall of Fame legend? They just fired a guy after 3 years. The candidates watch those things. The candidate list will be small. James Franklin should be #1 regardless of who else is available.

The next question would be: Why would anyone be compelled to write a silly story about what cutcliffe does or does not want, based on "he was asked"?? Maybe tell us who asked him? How credible is the source? I don't know, it feels like we're missing out on some information here.
