Florida offers to complete game vs. Georgetown

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida wants to finish its postponed season opener against Georgetown.

Coach Billy Donovan said Tuesday night that the No. 7 Gators have reached out to the Hoyas about completing the game in nearby Jacksonville.

"Our school has reached out to Georgetown about completing and finishing the game," Donovan said. "There are some dates and some possibilities of that happening. I think our school's waiting to hear back from Georgetown about the possibility of that happening. Our school's in favor of making that happen."

The teams played a half aboard the USS Bataan, an active amphibious assault ship stationed in Virginia that temporarily docked at Mayport Naval Station. The game was called when condensation created dangerous playing conditions before the second half.

Florida led 27-23.

Donovan said the second half would be played at Veterans Memorial Arena, probably Jan. 2. Florida is off between Dec. 29 and Jan. 6. Georgetown is off from Dec. 22 through Jan. 5, when it opens conference play at Marquette.

"There's two or three dates that work for both teams," Donovan said. "Our administration hasn't necessarily talked to Georgetown specifically yet, but I know there's a phone call in to discuss the possibility of finishing the game."

It would be an easy trip for the Gators, whose campus is about 75 miles from downtown Jacksonville.

Not as much for Georgetown, which would have to fly down and spend a night in a hotel.

"I think they tried to talk about some things in terms of helping Georgetown out financially with their travel and getting in to play the game," Donovan said.
