NASHVILLE - Vanderbilt athletics director David Williams wouldn’t mind the headaches that would come with other schools pursuing his football coach.

It’s far better than the alternative.

“It sort of means we’re on the right track,” Williams said. “If we were 0-11, you’d be asking me, ‘When are you going to get rid of your coach?’ I’m happy to worry about it. It means we’ve got the right coach. We’ve got a coach that other people want.”

Williams expects James Franklin to draw interest after leading Vanderbilt to five SEC wins for the first time in 77 years.

Franklin won't be at vandy for more than 1 more year, maybe not that long. His name is already being mentioned for other jobs around the country and you want to take one while your star is shinning at its brightest.

It's all smoke and mirrors. Vandy did not upset anyone. The SEC teams they did beat were way down this year. Think about it, it took beating UT at one of their worst years in history for Vandy to have this record. Anyone decent they lost.

So congrats you got some wins, it's not like they did anything much to anyone worth a darn. I bet that win over Presbyterian and UMASS is still looming large, lol.

UT in comparison could have been 8-4 sleep walking, but they had a lame duck staff.

MarbleCitySon writes:

So vandy wins two out of seven and they talk like we're football equals?! Just wait, the sun only shines on a dog's arse every once in awhile. Enjoy this now, it won't be like this for long. Tennessee is still in the top ten winningest college football programs. Vandy doesn't even get to breathe the same air, that goes for plenty of other programs who consider themselves "winners".

SummittsCourt writes:

It's funny how after over 100 years of bad football they have a couple of above .500 seasons and suddenly they are thinking they are doing something.

Congrats to Vandy for finally having a few winning seasons back to back. Great! Now try beating some quality teams on a regular basis and win more than 7 games on a regular basis and then we'll see.

Had UT had a defense this year they would easily be 8-3 or 9-2 right now instead of looking for a new coach. That's how close it can be sometimes.

I agree with utjunkie, Franklin will be gone this time next year and vandy will be back to losing as usual.

what i get out of this is that vandy is hoping the vols will join them as permanent residents of the sec cellar. between hamilton and dooley, i'd say we've taken a lot of steps in that direction.

Vanderbilt can not make any rational claim that Nashville is even a VU city. You can't act like pretentious dbags 364 days out of the year, and then attempt to claim the city of Nashville is "yours" when you want it to be.
That stadium was 50/50 Saturday night. When Tennessee is experiencing a third disasterous year in a row, while VU is experiencing their greatest success, the fan count on Saturday spoke volumes.

jawbreaker writes:

Whether Franklin is there or not, Tennessee needs to commit to getting itself back on top so that regular beat-downs of the Commodores once again become the norm. No, Vandy, you cannot have Nashville! Yes, some of Vandy's students come from Nashville, and end up staying there; but, the greater majority come from distant places, many from the North and Northeast. So, who is it that educates the majority of students from the Nashville and surrounding areas? The university system of the State of Tennessee, and more specifically the UT system, and most specifically, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Most of the people in the stands at Vandy didn't go to school there, and when it comes time to send their kids to college, they send them to UT, because they can afford to. Financial aid notwithstanding, sending kids to Vandy is prohibitively expensive for most parents. So, come on Dave Hart, and the $$$$ people, get this hire done, and get it right!

Spot on..Vandy/Franklin reminds me of Tommy West at Memphis the year they played in the New Orleans Bowl..It was UM's greatest hour with 8 or 9 wins but no top 20 wins were included in that campaign. What Franklin needs is to really showcase this season and take advantage of this opportunity because it will not last but a short while. That probably means Franklin will get out while the getting is good.

"Redneck element"? "Peckerwood pride"? Wow, what a piece of work you are! I'm not delusional, and I'm not a phony fan. I'm a fan that wants the Vols to succeed. That means I wanted Derek Dooley to succeed. He didn't, so now we move on.

You, on the other hand, NEVER wanted Coach Dooley to succeed, because he wasn't your choice. "Phony fan"? Yep, that's you.

Sure wish you had someone who cares about you enough to share Thanksgiving with you. Maybe then we could see you post something a little more positive occasionally. I'm sorry you're so miserable, but just as a suggestion, maybe if you would let go of your hatred of Derek Dooley and those of us who really want to see our Vols get back to the top, maybe, just maybe, life would seem a little more pleasant for you, and you wouldn't see the need to try to bring everyone else down to your level of misery.

Just a suggestion...but I doubt it works.

GO VOLS!!!

I know that's right,we have people still talking about the 1998 season. That was a great season don't get me wrong but we need to beat poeple from here on out.We haven't had the coaching now we don't have the players to beat the top SEC schools. It really doesn't matter how long we beat teams,we just need to keep on beating them. With that said Mr.Hart find me a coach,I don't care if he's black or white either,as long as he can recruit and get the best out of the players,I'm all in....GBO.

Yes, Vanderbilt is enjoying the best two-season run in its SEC history, but that's a far cry from being a longterm factor in league play.

I'm confident Dave Hart will hire the right coach that will get us back in the mix quickly and Vandy will be, well, Vandy again.

Jughead, and fellow Vols,

What a shame something happened to this guy to cause him to maintain this twisted lifestyle he has. We have quite a few trolls here granted, but it's pretty obvious something is terribly wrong with this guy.

He carries so much animosity around........what a drain on people to have to listen to it, or in our case here on GVW, to occasionally read the stuff he throws out, knowing fully well what you're going to get.

Someone like this must have some underlying reasons for such a twisted thought process. Most of us didn't like the way some former coaches performed, or how some games turned out......but
we didn't dwell on it to the extent this guy has.

It's Thanksgiving.......... let's find positive people to be around.........family and good friends.

If history, tradition, stadium and resources are what's needed to win football games forever why even worry about who is coaching? UT should beat Vandy 100 times out of a 100. The fact is a lot of close games since 2005. The Roman Empire lasted a long time as well.

Vandy fans need to know one thing they are always little brother. They have 3 wins in 30 yrs vs UT so it's a joke! I'm sure if you put MTSU in our conference they could do that. If Florida were ever to go undefeated, like Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn have done a few times, they would probably hang up a banner. But, I don't see that happening. But 8 wins for Vandy is about like 10 or 11 for Florida, it's as good as it's ever going to get. So congratulations.

UT fans are still the most irrational people on the planet! Every negative comment that you make about Vandy, can be made about you from Florida fans, and Alabama fans. Living off of the memories of 20, 30, 40, or 50 years ago is insane. In modern college football, UT has been as irrelevant as Notre Dame. With LESS of a chance of ever becoming relevant again. If you read the endless phooey on this board, you would think UT is a program like Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Or USC. it's not! Vandy being a private school that wasn't 100% committed to athletics is the difference between UT Being better on the field than Vandy over the years. Pound for pound, making all things equal, Vandy has more to offer than UT would ever be ale to. History is the only thing UT has to hang it's hat on. If Vandy decided to make the level of commitment to athletics that UT did, Vandy would consistently be UT's equal on the field. And together neither will ever be on the level of the top programs in the SEC. UT fans need to see their program for what it is, what is has always been, and what it will always be. A mid level SEC program with the potential to win more than 8 games a year every now and then, and if the stars align right, make it to and possibly win the SEC championship game. You HAVE NEVER been a consistent contender for the National Title, and never will! Accept that, and you will be a little happier in your everyday lives.

Put the paint chips down. If we don't get Gruden and I think now that we will we will be getting a proven coach that will take UT forward as it should be. If we get Gruden I believe that it will hasten Franklin's leaving. He will feel the need to strike while the iron's hot. Hey SC may need a coach if they lose to Notre Dame.

Why do you poeple keep thinking Gruden is the answer to all of your problems? Do you not remember the Buccaneers thought the same thing? That didn't turn out so well! UT doesn't have talent already in place to win it all. Gruden hasn't been on the recruiting trail. It's going to take more than being in the NFL recruit. Ask Charlie Weis!
