Florida gave Muschamp extension before season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No. 5 Florida didn't wait to give coach Will Muschamp a contract extension.

The Gators (11-1) gave him one before the season.

President Bernie Machen and athletic director Jeremy Foley met in August and agreed to extend Muschamp's contract for a year, through 2017. The Gainesville Sun first reported the extension Tuesday.

Foley says in a statement that he and Machen "believed in the leadership and direction of the football program this summer and we made a decision to extend coach Muschamp's contract an additional year this past August, prior to the start of the season."

Financial terms remain the same, giving Muschamp another year at $2.7 million annually.

In January, after the Gators finished 7-6 in Muschamp's first season, Florida picked up a one-year option in the contract.
