Power player: Heath Shuler to work for Duke Energy

ASHEVILLE — Outgoing U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler will run Duke Energy’s lobbying operation in Washington after the end of his term, his office and the company said.

Shuler, a Democrat representing in the 11th District in Western North Carolina, will be the company’s senior vice president of federal affairs.

Duke, which merged with Progress Energy this year, is the nation’s largest public utility with 7.1 million customers. It is based in Charlotte.

Shuler will be based in Washington and supervise a staff of about six people, said Tom Williams, the company’s director of external relations.

Even if it is a past Tennessee great QB I get irritated when congress members leave office to become lobbyists. The whole system is broken and the cozy relationships between lobbyist and congress members is one of the reasons.

Totally agree, they should be prohibited from lobbying for five years after they leave office. This is a disgrace.

And we all know what the lobby for power companies typically push. Lower regulation so they can push up utility rates and lower emission controls so they can pollute more. Not the most godly profession I can think of entering if I had a choice.
