Very interesting...I hope this report is more credible than all others thus far. Not sure if long term he'll be the best guy but I think its hard to argue that he'd bring the most energy and excitement to the hill on day one. It'll only go up from there if he wins...

Interestingly, Monte Kiffin has just announced he is leaving USC after their bowl game. Coachingsearch.com says he wants to go back to the NFL, but maybe he just wants to get away from Lame? If we're going to dream, why not dream Gruden has been talking to Monte about a reunion of that Super Bowl staff?

too many years of thrift store coach shopping have gotten us here.. find that extra couple Million and do what is needed to bring us back...(b/c im tried of wasting my money to see UT lose..even tho i will continue to do so..lol)
if UT can afford Gruden..they can afford to spend 1 days worth of a sellout crowd on his staff....do what is necessary...

Pegasus writes:

Jon Gruden will be the next Head Football Coach of the University of Tennessee. The announcement is in the process of being coordinated. The part of the story about "aren't close enough on money for the staff" is incorrect. That source is dead wrong. There is NOT a money problem. Congratulations to the Volunteers.

When this falls through and it will, I'd like to see UTAD look @ the Baylor coach, Briles or SMU's coach June Jones. Keep Pittman, Graham, but that is entirely up to new coach. Also Chavis does not want to be a HC. Loves what he does, DC and coaching LB's. Bonzaivol

Rebelsfball2008 writes:

If this is legit i can promise you Hart & UT will not let a 2 or 3 million gap in pay for a coaching staff be the undoing.. they will find the money.. Think of this.. If he didnt give him the extra pay...Hart would forever be the man that let Gruden slip through his hands......Not gonna happen..

10seVol85_Part_Deux writes:

If Hart manages to land Gruden, no matter how much he pays him and his staff, and no matter how much of a buyout he gives them, nobody will blame him if it doesn't work out. Too many fans want this at any cost. Very smart move by Hart if this is for real.

Not sure Monte is a great idea. His defense at USC left a lt to be desired this year. He seems to struggle against the spread and that's what he'll be facing a lot next year (OU is just one example).

If Gruden is announced as the HC, I guarantee that you won't be on this board.

I wish that this would happen. I just don't see it happening. I guess after all the UT absentee landlord ism as of late i wouldn't be very shocked if we hired Houston Nutt. Not trying to be a downer here.. just venting. If we don't get an AMAZING coach like Gruden... we're screwed... bad.

I heard Purdue has offered Butch Jones, so he might not be our next HC.

Hart DOES not want Gruden, the boosters do and if Hart doesn't produce, he's gone!

FWBVol writes:

So a few hours ago it was Gruden wanted to coach in the NFL and now it's get the money for assistant coaches and he's coming to UT. There will be a lot of upset Vol fans if this fails to materialize. I think that's the big reason Dave Hart has been keeping the search so close to vest.

If we don't land Gruden I'd still like to see Jimbo Fisher of Florida State. I don't know that it's so sweet being the guy that follows he legend. And, as long as he is at FSU he will have to compete with Florida as the top school in the state. Fisher at Tennessee and he's the top dog in the state. But the big thing now seems to be getting the Gruden thing wrapped up...anything less will be a major let down for the masses.

Could be true. I read somewhere that Monte tried to talk Lane out of leaving Tennessee for Southern Cal. The report said that Monte told Lane "why do you want to leave? We have everything going for us here." With the season Southern Cal has had this year, I'm betting that Lane wishes he had never left Tennessee to.

Monte is a class act but should retire and as far as his son LAME, i hope he ends up coaching high school football in New Mexico

Last weekend, when Lame decided to go for the TD on 4th down, with under 3 minutes left, and down by 9 points, Monte probably gave up on him. You can only have your son as your boss for so long, once you realize what an idiot he is.

I've heard that Monte was forced to resign. I really, really hope that he doesn't come to UT. We already have a Defensive Coordinator that gives up 50+ points per game. Why add another one? Monte Kiffin's college tenure has been lackluster...and that's a kind way of saying, he sucks at the college game.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Gruden wants a huge amount of money so that he can hire Oregon's OC away. It's well known that Gruden loves Oregon's fast paced, spread type offense.

Perhaps, but his defense at UT in 2009 ranked 22nd in the country in total defense and gave up only 22 ppg. Not exactly the best ever, but not nearly 50 or comparable to the 2012 disaster. He's averaged about 24 ppg at USC the last three years.

There is much to like about Chavis, but once again I saw his patented "prevent defense" with the BIG coverage cushion lose a game for LSU.

Gruden didn't end the speculation Wednesday because Gruden craves attention and loves the limelight. He would be a great hire for UT and could recruit players like no other but if you see him in West Town Mall he will be wearing a jacket that says "Hello I am John Gruden" that is how much he craves attention.

He shut down the Arkansas rumors very quickly. His wife is playing a very important role in all of this.

And so it begins. With the amount off money we are going to offer, we could probably nudge Petterson to move.... at this juncture we have to pay our we will look like fools. I suspect we well own the highest paid college coach at the end of the day. It will fix recruiting and he will stay 3 years at most imo, but we should be back on the map. I am not convinced he is the best choice however.

Chavis will not be back in Knoxville as either the head coach or the DC. He will finish his career with Les Miles at LSU. Why go elsewhere when he has material for success right in his back yard and the "free hand" from Miles to produce the defenses needed to make Miles a success. LSU will remain in the SEC west title chase virtually every year barring any injuries and bad luck.

I think Chavis only won one with us. LSU didn't win one with Chavis as the DC.

Still, Chavis is an ELITE defensive mind. We hadn't seen a UT team consistently wrap a ball carrier up and take him to the ground since Chavis left.

His only fault is going to that prevent defense late in games, especially without having a top-notch defensive end to get pressure on the QB (ie Jadaveon Clowney or Leonard Little).
