Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said a review of defensive breakdowns in Saturday’s 51-44 loss at Georgia made him “madder than I’ve ever been,” but he was also encouraged by the growth of the Vols’ offensive line and running attack.

"If this team stays together and stays the course -- and I know they will -- the results are going to come,” Dooley said Monday during a speech at the Knoxville Quarterback Club.

Dooley fielded questions for 40 minutes from the crowd at Calhoun’s on the River. The crowd was largely supportive.

“We’re behind you 100 percent,” one man told Dooley as he walked to his car. “I appreciate that very much,” Dooley replied.

Dooley said the defensive breakdowns in the first and third quarters were frustrating and perplexing, as the Vols made big stops in the second and fourth quarters on the same plays, using the same defense.

"It made me mad, madder than I’ve ever been,” Dooley said. “We need to be really upset at the way we performed.”

Dooley said young players would get a chance to compete for playing time during the off-week. He singled out freshman safety LaDarrell McNeil.

“He’s someone you guys are going to see a lot more of,” Dooley said.

Dooley said he was most pleased with the performance of the offensive line, which powered a successful running game while neutralizing Georgia’s fearsome defensive front.

“It looks like what we all want to see and what Tennessee fans have seen in the past,” Dooley said. “It was fun to watch. That’s a unit that has gone from being picked on and beat up on to being one of the best ones out there.”

The Vols (3-2, 0-2 SEC) have an off-week before playing at No. 20 Mississippi State (4-0, 1-0) Oct. 13 in Starkville (TV: ESPN2, 9 p.m.) Dooley said the Vols are closer to turning a corner, but he understands the frustration with the two league losses.

“It never happens when you want it to happen,” Dooley said. “It never goes on your timetable.”

Go Vols! Stop the big plays and make some on the O side and we will be all good.

StoneJackBaller writes:

We are clearly lacking depth on defense. Brent Brewer should be moved to linebacker. Start McNeil at safety (it can't get worse) and get Bonner and Gray involved.

If we lose to MS State, start looking for a head coach to replace Dooley, but only if a big name will take it.

Sunseri needs to practice getting off blocks and getting to the edge.

You can't teach speed.

Maybe run less of the 3-4 and slowly incorporate it over time for the sake of trying to stay competitive this year.

WE ARE NOT VANDERBILT! Moral victories suck.

But it is obvious that some of the "fans" are just not cut out to be SEC Fans, sorry I am normally a bigger supporter of fans, but these fans have disappionted me too much this year. I must say even in defeat it was the best performance by a VOL team since back in the Fulmer hay days. Great effort and if the Georgia defense pans out in the rest of there games as they should our offense was outstanding. I do expect us to beat State easily. Give the roosters a run and fall to Bama in a good game. I fully expect CDD to get a one year extension ending this season at 8-4 or 9-3. Our secondary is a serious problem. No big names to shore it up since Berry. It is time to give the freshmen a shot as it could not be worse. Moral victories are telling me we are close to turning the corner. I just get bent out of shape at arse whippings.

He made the comment that they made stops on the same plays every other quarter. I guess that means he felt the players slacked.
Just a guess.

Amen brother. This fan base needs to GET BEHIND, even rally around Coach Dooley and our team. He may not be a Nick Saban, but you can tell that he GENUINELY cares and WANTS to win. We are closer than what alot of people feel we are. We're not rebuilding in the freaking PAC-12, but the SEC. It takes time, and Dooley cares. let's keep him. and support him. Certainly for Dooley, beating a quality team would be an awkward position...

When the defensive (and other) coaches bailed out of Knoxville last year on Dooley, everybody from rocket scientists to mental defectives HAD to know the score---everybody except the Board of Trustees. Those coaches did not want their families' futures entrusted to him, and left---some for lesser jobs.

So now we have a raft of Alabama and Florida people running the University, an Atlanta lawyer as Football Head Coach... a head men's basketball coach that has a horrible record in his first year coaching...a baseball team that is now two head coaches past competency...
a swimming/diving coach gone for moral turpitude...a living legend women's basketball coach FORCED OUT by the Alabama Management...a fan base in disarray, some actively boycotting games & others leaving at half-time...

and UT is paying 1/2 BILLION $$$$$$ per decade for the whole Athletics Department mess.

And ole Geno Auriemmainthe Head Women's Basketball Coach @U of Connecticut---who was rude and disrespectful to Coach Pat Summitt, the forced out living legend, probably thinks his prayers have been answered and hopes the University Management are all given tenure by the rocket scientist majority of the Trus tees.

If UT played like this against Florida, it's a WIN! YES, we did give up some huge plays defensively, bug again..coming from the perspective of a Washington Redskins fan, the 3-4 defense is not something that will be "picked up" over night! Whether you like Coach Dooley or not, please remember that when he took over this program, the football program was not barely staying above water, it had sunk deeper than the Titantic! I believe Sunseri is going to be a great DC. We do NOT have the depth or speed on defense yet. Combine that with installing a new complicated 3-4 defense, and you get gashed - a lot.

I think Sunseri will recruit well and he deserves time. Until then, he needs to start playing McNeil, Bonner, and Gray in the defensive backfield. Byron Moore can't do it all himself, although he's made a great effort to.

Expect average, get average. Expect greatness, be great.

There, there. Now do you feel better? Take another Prozac and get some sleep.

There are many things wrong, but they do seem to be getting better. I'm upset that it is not happening faster, but our team was decimated over the years by many problems.

If Dooley is fired or run off, check the recruiters that are working their tails off to convince the recruits that our coaches are stable in their jobs. I wonder how many recruits are holding out waiting to see who our coach will be or writing us off because of fans like you. BTW, are you one of the big donors at UT? Were you a letterman in football? What are your credentials?

Fulmer is gone, and for the last few years that he was here,"experts" like you were calling for his head. Take your medicine and calm down. Tennessee football will be here for years after we are gone.

Played a full 60 minutes with no quitting This defense is showing improvement, but to give up 51 points is not very good, but Georgia gave up 44 and should have been at least 10 more points. Would you say Georgia defense is not very good or does Tennessee have a offense that is better then their defense? That is what I think happened to Tennessee, Georgia had a little bit better offense then we had a defense . One more thing a dropped touchdown pass and a falling down after a completion and a sure touchdown and missed field goal did not help any at all. This would equal to 17 points and a game winner.44+17= 61 points.

Amen+1. Support these coaches and players. Let's see how the season plays out. The ignorance is plentiful here and never ceases to amaze.

Yes.....this is fun! Go Vols!!

I am behind coach DOOLEY 100 %. Time heals all wounds and there is really no coach out there to get. If all of the fans that is calling for CDD head can just name what coach will come to UT and fix this problem that was left years ago then lets hear some names. I say let CDD get in his contract and see where we are after that then pool all resources and go hire the best coach out there. No need to fire CDD and hire another up and coming coach, that isn't what ALABAMA did 5 years ago or that isn't what OHIO ST. did when TREXEL was ran out. IF we just give our coach the time then we will see what a rebuilding looks like. I think that this years recruiting class will tell the tale on what CDD future will hold. SPEED, SPEED, SPEED. That is what it is going to take to get back in the mix of the SEC East. GO BIG ORANGE....VFL

How about Bobby Petrino? He is a proven big name coach that is floating free. Or how about Terry Bowden. He has done a great job everywhere he's coached. His team sure gave UT all they wanted. We're lucky that it was his first year there. I believe that that Hart needs to at least be in contact with Petrino to see if he is interested. He will not be unemployed long

And a bunch of East Tennessee folks are hoodwinked by a guy who looks good in a blazer and orange tie, and tell him how much they are supporting him.

Horse Manure. And horse manure is what the Board of Trustees have manufactured and called it an Athletics Program> That includes Mike Hamilton and a whole bunch of others who are not competent to wash Doug Dickey or Phillip Fulmer's athletics under-apparel (did not want to take the chance the obvious word would be zapped.)

Fulmer was fired for THIS????????????? Fulmer was paid an additional $6Million in severance for THIS??? And Hamilton was allowed to arrange a HUGE payout for himself for THIS???

Makes me wonder if Hamilton had pictures of prominent UT people in awkward positions.

General Neyland must be crying. And Bear Bryant and Adolph Rupp are both laughing up their sleeves.

Matter of fact, Bryant, Rupp and Geno probably had their prayers answered from the dark side and the UT Board of Trustees majority.

Go Vols...

Nothing you typed makes any sense, and your numbers are so far off its like your Obama's speech writer or something.

Dooleys doesn't make 5 million, and the coaches that left weren't all that awesome.

Oooops, UT Fans, I think we just lost another Fan from the Board, its ok, he is still immature or has not grown up since 2008 and is quoting a former coach. I really thought this young man had a chance, but the " " revealed his weakness.

Before the "big name coach" chants start,I believe money plays a much bigger part than people are willing to admit. A big name coach after another buyout?
Say what you will about Mark Packer but he said it best on "The locker room"
They were discussing buyouts and he asked the two former Vols on the panel (Troy and Fred)
"Did you guys ever take a bus to Athens"? Both laughed as they replied never.
Mark asked what does that tell you "We broke" and "out of money" was the responses.
I know as fans it is like playing with monopoly money but it doesn't work that way in real life.

I think if funds needed money can be found,,,these same guys give millions to politicans when asked every year.....

True but there is usually laws associated with their generousity that assures funds coming back plus fold.

Sorry your so bitter but any high level coach will tell you improvement starts in year 3. This is year 3 and I now see improvement. Sorry you cant. Saturday's game may have been an aberration but let it play out. The season is not even half over.

The Vols are playing, by and large, with 3 star talent. Georgia (and Florida) are playing with 5 star talent. Nick Saban himself couldn't coach 3 star talent to consistently compete, much less win, against the Floridas ,Georgias and Alabamas. The Junior Varsity rarely beats the Varsity. Recruiting is the differential. Get real.
