Mark Wiedmer: Mississippi State game crucial for Derek Dooley

KNOXVILLE - Third-year Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley was almost done with his media obligations Monday when someone reminded him that Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen is undefeated (5-0) in his fourth season at MSU.

The implication was obvious. If Mullen could take a program that had posted a losing record in seven of the eight years before he arrived and stand 5-0 in his fourth year on the job, shouldn't the Big Orange Nation expect a similarly hot start from Dooley in 2013?

But Dooley didn't get his law degree by winning a raffle.

"Every situation is unique," he said.

True that MSU hasn't played anybody yet. We should stack up against them pretty well, but the D is gonna have to step up to the plate. Their biggest focus should be on making darn sure that there are no plays over 20 yards allowed. If we can just do that much, we'll have a shot at the win. Allowing three or four home runs a game won't get it done, though.

Excellent question! I sure hope Dooley can win this game against MS State, then play SC and AL close and finish out 8 & 4! IMO 8 & 4 gives Dooley 2013, if not we will see very soon, THE TIME IS NOW!

For the Record SEC coaches winning turn around time:

Muschamp - 1 1/2 yrs
Saban - 1 yr
Mullens 4 yrs

THE TIME IS NOW DOOLEY, NO EXCUSES!

GO VOLS, VFL

Recycled article just with a better writer..Mullen's done pretty well against East opponents but before Auburn Mullen was 0--12 against the West big boys!! I agree we would be 5--0 like MSU but it doesn't mean that MSU is overrated..They are well coached, experienced, don't make stupid mistakes andQB Russell is not to be taken lightly..Still QB Frazier had 5 turnovers by himself and gift wrapped the loss..KY is hands down the worst team in the SEC and maybe the FBS...If Chaney is stupid enough to come out pass happy against a really good secondary some early INT's would be a set up for failure..Stick with the run and pass if we get a one on one mismatch..Fast start will deflate the crowd

BrassMonkey writes:

I like how everyone overlooks the fact that MSU beat Kentucky and Auburn already this year. The Kentucky win by itself equals something that Dooley cannot accomplish. With 2 SEC wins in half a season Dan Mullen is already pretty close to topping Dooley's all time SEC win total.

civilianvol_formerly_marinevol writes:

Not saying it should be, but to say this game is crucial for Dooley might be an understatement. I believe that if UT loses this game, the "Fire Dooley" movement will begin in earnest. I will not join in that movement until I see how the season concludes and see the caliber of the next recruiting class. A season with less than 8 wins AND a mediocre signing class will be a strong indicator that a change is needed. However, when evaluating the won-loss record, certain other factors should be considered, such as the blatantly unfair losses to LSU and UNC in Dooley's first year (which caused an NCAA rule change), and, on the other side, the embarrassing loss at Kentucky and the fact that our only conference win last year was over Vanderbilt as a result of a fluke play (and questionable call) in overtime. I personally believe that for Dooley to be given another year, a loss to Miss. State would have to be mitigated by a huge upset win over either Alabama or South Carolina, which is possible but not probable.

That said I thought this article did alright with Dooley considering Dooley's record here.
Right or wrong I think everyone expects a win against Miss. St.. That's probably because we usually beat them. Also because their schedule is a breeze.

We can't look past them of course. Because they do have a much improved team from all that's said. I hope we put them back in their place with a huge win.

UT 45 MS 24??? I think I predicted that already.
Regardless it'll be at least 2TD advantage. Our D will show improvement SURELY!! I've been saying that for 3 weeks and Sunseri has been messing with me.hehe

But the president got four years! And did you see the mess he was handed when got here? Not to mention the obstructionist fans yelling "NO" at every turn! He did fix healthcare for all with his instructions on showering, and sent a terrorist mastermind off to the afterlife at Tennessee Tech.

I like foxnews. It sort of balances the idiocy. They give an alternative to MSNBC who started all this onesided "journalism" stuff. I can't stand either channel much honestly. Not much on TV to watch really except SPORTS!!!

BTW. Walt. You finally wrote something with which I agree...........but you should relent the fact that it would be worse for UT to release CDD from his contract UNTIL he's fulfilled four years, as other HC's are already wary of the tenuous coaching situation at UT. Supporting him for this tenure is the smartest position as it makes our program more attractive. This program won't go away in a year or so...nor will it lose its traditional attractiveness. I, for one, have chosen to stay the course with CDD until the jury has all the facts. VFL!

Weidmer can be a good writer at times, but like Adams, he doesn't spend a lot of time working through the logic of his opinions before putting them on paper. Point of reference - his article on Debbie Jennings. Used to be only sports writers could get away with that. Now most columnists for the NYT.

Agree that Vols will score more than 24 and likewise MSU will score more than 17. Mullen is a good coach, just can't stock pile the talent like Bama, LSU, Florida, Georgia.

I've come to realize recently that 70-75% of the population will vote in favor of the D candidate or R candidate regardless of points for or against and won't listen to opposite viewpoints. That leaves 25-30% without red or blue colored glasses, half of which won't vote anyway, and most of the rest don't have the time, energy or capability to fully research each side of the argument.

How does this relate to sports? You find nearly the same percentage breakdown with posters here on this board. Those for, those against, neither to be convinced of the other, and the rest that don't know for certain but can never get all the facts to know.

True! True!
But Dooley needs to beat everyone, if possible. I really thought we had a very good chance to win most games this year. The big ones to me were Bama and the Gamecocks. I think we had a good chance at all the rest. I also think this season has proved that to be correct. We will do just fine the rest of the year.
Vols 9-3

Hey Monkey breath, Derek Dooley did beat Kentucky in 2010. And, as I pointed out in a post yesterday, there are only two head UT football coaches that coached more than a couple of years that didn't lose to Kentucky --General Neyland and Phillip Fulmer and the General had three or four ties against Kentucky.

Yes, Johnny Majors, Bill Battle, Doug Dickey and Bowden Wyatt all lost to Kentucky at one time or another in their coaching careers at Tennessee. And if you simply go by the law of averages, sooner or later a 20-plus game winning streak will end. There is no doubt in my mind that during that 27 years UT probably won a few games it shouldn't have. It's just that it was Dooley's bad luck for the streak to end on his watch with a bowl game hanging in the balance.

From your lips to God's ear. Win this game - I believe we win 8+. Lose this game, and we run the risk of 7-5 or 6-6...and we buy a genuinely worthy SEC head coach for 2013. Thank goodness for Hart and for the new Vol FB staff. IF we lose this game...by 2 TD margin, does Dooley continue through the end of the season? I do not believe the players are playing for Dooley...they are playing for their position coaches/assistants HCs, the fans and their scholies.

BTW, I believe Hart could promote Dooley to Asst A.D. for a year, bring in a new coach, and stability would not be harmed in the least. I can see Dooley being much better at the admin side of sports (put his J.D. to work as well) vs. interfacing with players, coaches and fans.

Walt, you might want to do some checking yourself. If you think Obama has the military mind to think up and order a backup force all by himself, you've been drinking the koolaid! His ONLY contribution to the whole thing was, "Yeah, that's sounds good. Proceed."

Now, can we just get back to sports?
