Austin Nichols not ready to announce decision

Father says rumors causing 'a lot of grief'

Having completed his final official recruiting visit to Auburn last weekend, Memphis Briarcrest Christian School senior Austin Nichols has no immediate plans to announce his college decision, according to his father, Mark Nichols.

Despite what you may have heard.

As fans of Tennessee, Memphis, Vanderbilt, Duke, Virginia and Auburn wait with bated breath for a decision, Mark Nichols told the News Sentinel on Tuesday that false information and rumors have led to "a feeding frenzy" surrounding his son.

"It causes a lot of grief and whiplash with everybody," he said.

Asked if there was any update on a timeline for a decision, Mark Nichols, quickly responded, "Nothing."

"We haven't even met as a family."

Mark Nichols then recounted a story of a friend in Knoxville calling him Tuesday saying a local radio station was reporting Austin planned to announce his college choice Friday and would ultimately pick the Vols.

"Well all that was new news to me," he said. "Thing about it is, I'm not saying he's not going to Tennessee, I don't know what he's going to do, but these people all need to take to chill pill. When he commits, he commits."

Austin Nichols is a 6-foot-9 power forward ranked as the No. 26 prospect in the Class of 2013 by 247Sports. He officially visited Tennessee two weekends ago.

As previously reported, he plans to make his announcement in early November.

"I don't know when we're going to announce," Mark Nichols said. "I'm out of town a lot so we've got to get together as a family and everything. We'll get it figured out soon here, hopefully."

Would be really nice to get him; gotta bridge that UK talent gap somehow.

That being said, hope he keeps a clear head and makes a decision that makes sense for him and his family.

It is Memphis or Duke. Nichols enjoyed meeting Peyton on his visit but it is unlikely he is coming here.

btr just can't stand that we may even get Nichols. That it's a possiblility even.

well I'm glad Mr. Nichols straightend the papers out. the media loves this "We got it first" junk. It's not news really till Nichols does commit somewhere.imho

Memphis, Duke or Tennessee; I'll take our chances with that combination any day. Not disparaging anybody, but the Big Orange future looks very bright.

Here is a novel idea. How about everyone on the radio and in these comment boards quit speculating and commenting as though they know what they are talking about until this young man and his family communicate their decision?

Between the recruiting of Austin and the swirl around Coach Dooley, they need to change the name of Knoxville to Gossipville or Dramatown. Absolutely ridiculous the way some fans act like children or high school kids thriving on rumor and innuendo.

Go Big Orange!....I'll hang up and listen to your comments...

Here you are again, showing your non-existent basketball knowledge. It's very unlikely you will ever gain any.

I would agree that the radio shows and newspapers need to act more like adults instead of school girls feeding the trolls and haters. It would help if everyone did that, as well.

It is between Tennessee, Memphis, Vanderbilt, Duke, Virginia and Auburn. I guess you failed the reading comprehension part in school.

We are witnessing history being made here folks...CCM is going "full steam ahead" in building the wall that CBP talked about constructing around the state of Tennessee's elite basketball talent....including Memphis! Be patient with Austin & the Nichols family... unless you've lived there and know, there will be an inordinate amount of pressure on him to attend The University of Memphis...but regardless, I have a good feeling that we'll get to see him in Tennessee Orange for the next few years...can't wait for him to suit up for the Vols!

Austin sounds like a great young man from a great family. It's an honor that he is considering Tennessee. I hope he chooses the Vols.

I know that the big-time recruiting rat-race can be a trial for any family, but Mr. Nichols sounds a bit naive if he thinks that kind of media gossip is uncalled for or something to cause him/them any particular concern. This is the 21st century. Internet chatter and 24/7 cable sports news are just facts these days. All these people have to talk about SOMETHING, and as long as there are highly-rated recruits still unsigned, they are going to talk about THEM.

The only way the average sports radio guy can make a reputation is to say a bunch of off-the-wall stuff and hope some of it sticks. Right now, only the Nichols' KNOW--if they do yet--and all anybody ELSE can do is speculate, which they will, no matter what the family might wish. If a blow-hard radio sports guy trying to fill dead air can put them off THAT bad, then maybe the kid should join the Army or go to Belmont Abbey or something. I would LOVE to have Austin here, and I certainly have nothing particular against Dad, even applaud him for being cautious and protective, but come on, people....

I'm all in favor of not overselling the kid or making his family feel pressured. However, look at the quote in the story; one of Dad's friends told him he heard a story saying that Austin was already UT-bound. I'm not knocking the veracity of Mark Nichols or his friend, but there seems to be a lot of room for hearsay in that statement. I would like to hear from some regular poster on here who also heard that broadcast before I put too much stock in that report. It just sounds a little strange if the real, perfectly acceptable reason for the delay, if there is one, was simply that they hadn't decided yet and wanted a little more time and freedom to do so.

Well, thank goodness we can always count on you for your daily thigh-slapper. Of course, you say the same thing so often, you probably think you are making a new post every time. Trust me, we have already heard it, totally discounted it, and notice it only the way we distantly hear a buzzing mosquito or housefly.

We're recruiting the son not the dad. I appreciate the father's opinion but he won't be in the post fighting for the rim, the son will.

Let it play out. I have a lot of faith in Martin and his recruiting ability. I think he tends to attract players because he is a player's coach. The ones we need will come on their own without some media hack trying to hype them up.

Yeah, you're right b2r, nothin' good ever happens at Tennessee. If it weren't for bad luck we'd have no luck at all...

A lot of you posters really amaze me. Are you even considering the fact that this young man has strong Christian principles as the rest of his family appears to have also. When the time comes for him to commit it will be after carefully considering all options. And one thing you can count on, where ever he goes he will be a great asset to his school and community.

Mr. Nichols, one of the fans mentioned that it would be an honor to have your son come to U.T. and I totally agree. We ask that you realize that we have a small percentage of idot posters on here trying their best to destroy a great University. I can remember when we had very loyal fans in huge numbers and I feel we steal have that loyalty, but KNS refuses to keep these idots to a minimum, so we have to live with their insults, as they seem to camp out on this site. It is sad when some so called fans can't say anything good about our University. This is a great University and we hope Austin comes to school here and plays 4 years, irregardless of where he goes to school we wish him the very best in his choice.

I don't think anybody on here disputed any of that. The main point raised in the article--maybe something other than the whole truth--was that Mr. Nichols was annoyed by a second-hand account of some radio hack saying UT had Austin already locked up. That may or may not be exactly true, but it didn't seem, at least in the context of the article, as if he were saying that God just hadn't given them the right sign yet. And if he really DID say or believe that, there aren't many on this board who would have given him a hard time for saying it.

OwensboroVol writes:

I have been impressed with Coach Martin's recruiting in the Memphis area. You have a school down there that is respected for its basketball program much more than Tennessee. However, I hope Nichols will remember that Tennessee is upcoming in Basketball. He could be at Tennessee when We get to our first final four. If so, he would forever be part of the Tennessee lore.

Oh, I think I will say "hi" to Manning tonight at the FedEx Forum as we introduce new owner, Robert Pera! I'm assuming Peyton will be there with his wife... pretty sure this made Austin's decision that much easier given he forgot to get Peyton's autograph THE FIRST TIME they met.

In a way, UT made this possible! Thanks a milly!! Lol
