KNOXVILLE — Tennessee enters game two of the football season with its tailback competition at square one.

The Volunteers' runners showed some good signs in the season-opening win, but the top spot in the pecking order again is up for grabs in a three-way battle among Rajion Neal, Marlin Lane and Devrin Young.

This week of practice began with the trio bracketed as co-starters, but the performance in Neyland Stadium will determine more who gets how many carries.

"Every week we're competing, and I think that's what they understand," running backs coach Jay Graham said after Wednesday's practice. "It's been a good week of practice, but the most important thing is getting to the game. Based on your practice, that determines how many reps you get.

First. I think Vol fans have already guaranteed a 3-0 start and a romp of Florida. Just remember how our last SEC game ended when we lost to Kentucky. Stay realistic with Dooley and this team and will not be too upset when they lay an egg.

Come on, fella! From all your previous posts, you will be disappointed if the Vols DON'T lay an egg. If you're going to be a troll, at least be honest about it.

You either work at KNS or sit in front of the computer on another teams site waiting to comment.

Either way I feel sorry for you. Hope you get better.

ON TOPIC...Marlin Lane was a stud in game one. Not afraid to hit someone in the mouth. These other two are happy dancers it seems like.

First it should learn to spell correctly, It's spelled Barea... not Brass..
It's really too bad that it isn't made to run out on the playground with everyone else. Too bad that it gets to stay inside with the teacher until mommy comes an gets it to take home.

Its sad how thin we are at running back. Lane is our best back by far, yet he lacks breakaway speed. Neal has speed but doesn't know how to run. Young is NOT a running back that can give you double digit carries and will only break tackles in the open field.

Major question I have is does Dooley know what a real running back looks like because this team certainly lacks one which is inexcusable for any SEC team.

kazoo writes:

Young is probably not an every-down back--but he's dangerous with the ball, and IMO Chaney needs to figure how to get him the ball in space. He's the type of player that a lot of teams make excellent use of, and we need to do the same.

Miamimindedvolheart writes:

Naming a starter at running back is not nearly as important (team building wise) as naming a starting quarterback. I think keeping competition open with these three guys is a great decision. pride will be what motivates these guys, and we vol fans will reap the benefits!

IT'S ON VOL FANS! IF YOU DON'T THINK THIS TEAM IS GOING TO HAVE AN AWESOME SEASON, THEN YOU NEED AWESOME LESSONS!

The RB's that need the practice is Neal and Young. Reward Lane and let him rest after the first quarter.

Time will tell who the cream of the crop is. I hope they all excel. Wouldn't that be nice? Fresh legs for 4 quarters!.....a defense nightmare.

Vols,

You guys ready for some football, chapter 2?
Hope those of you who can make it to the game enjoy the day.

When Johnlg speaks with regard to a troll ( the Brass , whatever ) you just know surely this is a bonafide troll. Pretty ironic as to how someone like this runs down the team and coaches all the time, then all of a sudden we see the "us, we, our, etc talk. Trolls like this need to get a real life.

We should see quite a few Vols getting to see the field against Ga State. Just hope noone is injured........either team and that a few other teas in the SEC East, bite the dust.

There you go again brASS Monkey.... using words like "our", "we". You are NOT one of us (True Vol Fans) in any shape, form, or fashion. I think I speak for all of US when I say..."pucker up and smooch OUR collective Big Orange brASS".

Speaking of the FU Gators....I was at lunch today in a fast food restaurant when in walked a dude wearing jorts, a wife beater t-shirt (pot belly included), and a FU hat. He was probably about 55 years old mostly bald with a little ponytail. Typical FU fan. I really wanted to ask him his prediction on the UT-FU game but figured he would want to fight so I just smiled and let it go.

Letting him rest would not be a reward!!!! A competitor wants to compete! It would piss him off. All that said... might be a good thing to do this and let Young and Neal battle in the final 3 quarters. Govols!

I still say give any guy 260 lbs+ the ball at tailback or anywhere back there! Some body we can call Great freight or SOMETHIN'!! Really. a play or 2. See what happens...or not.

Seriously I'm not worried really till SEC but I'd like to see some less fear in the RB's. MAN UP! If you scream as loud as you can right before you go into the line it'll help. Just don't go feet first.hehe

There will be no competition on the field tomorrow. Lane would have 100 yards at the end of the first quarter.

Actually, I was afraid he might try to kiss me. However, I was able to get a pic of him and his buddy as they left the restaurant. Draw your own conclusions........
