Terry Bowden: 'No reason' Akron can't beat Vols

How would you grade Tennessee's performance against Florida?

Akron coach Terry Bowden doesn't need to look far to give his team evidence that it can put up a fight Saturday at Tennessee.

He can mention that Bowling Green was tied with Florida midway through the third quarter before falling to the Gators 27-14 in the opening week of the season. Bowling Green and Akron both play in the Mid-American Conference, and Florida won 37-20 at Tennessee last week.

Or he could reference Louisiana-Monroe's stunner over Arkansas two weeks ago and Western Kentucky's victory over Kentucky last week.

"You don't have to talk about once in a decade or once every 10 years," Bowden said. "Every week, whether it be Monroe or Western Kentucky, every week a team beats another team they're not supposed to beat. Like I told our players, there's absolutely no reason that shouldn't be us."

Akron's history offers plenty of reasons why an upset seems unlikely.

The Zips (1-2) have lost 21 consecutive road games since winning 42-35 at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 18, 2008. Akron has gone 3-24 since the start of the 2010 season and has only one win over a Football Bowl Subdivision program during that stretch. In its five previous games with Southeastern Conference teams, Akron has been outscored 256-19. The Zips head into this game as 33-point underdogs.

Then again, that history might not mean much.

Bowden, who went 47-17-1 at Auburn from 1993-98, just arrived at Akron this season. Akron set a Mid-American Conference single-game record last week by throwing for 565 yards in a 66-6 rout of Football Championship Subdivision program Morgan State. Akron lost 56-14 to UCF and 41-38 in overtime to Florida International in its other two games.

"It's (Bowden's) first year and they had a lot of transfers come in, so there are a lot of new faces," Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said. "That first game, probably they were struggling to get things going. Now they've got three games under their belts with a lot of new people. They're playing a lot faster and a lot more comfortable in the systems."

Each of these teams likes playing fast.

Tennessee (2-1) has compiled 321.3 passing yards per game to rank second in the SEC and has four scoring drives of 34 or fewer seconds. Tyler Bray has passed for 900 yards with eight touchdowns and only two interceptions while throwing to a receiving corps that features two of the SEC's best in Justin Hunter and Cordarrelle Patterson.

Akron averages 55.7 passes per game, which is tied with Marshall for second among all FBS teams. Only Houston passes more often. Dalton Williams, a transfer from FCS program Stephen F. Austin, is tied for second in the nation in touchdown passes (10) and ranks fourth in total passing yards (1,004).

"They have a fast-tempo offense," Tennessee linebacker Herman Lathers said. "They run quick plays and snap the ball quick, so we have to get lined up and get subs in and out."

Williams faces a Tennessee secondary that has two new starters this week.

Sophomore cornerback Justin Coleman moved ahead of senior Marsalis Teague on the depth chart and will make his first start of the season Saturday. Tennessee also shuffled its safety rotation after Brian Randolph tore his anterior cruciate ligament last week in a 37-20 loss to Florida. Byron Moore moves over from strong safety to replace Randolph at free safety, while Brent Brewer takes Moore's old spot.

That secondary could have its hands full against Akron's fast-paced offense, but Tennessee's biggest challenge this week is to avoid focusing on what went wrong last week. The Vols can't brood over the loss to Florida so much that they overlook Akron.

"You can't look past anybody and you can't dwell on the past," Tennessee tailback Rajion Neal said.

There's also the possibility that Tennessee could be looking ahead rather than looking back.

After facing Akron, Tennessee has four consecutive games against ranked opponents: No. 5 Georgia, No. 23 Mississippi State, No. 1 Alabama and No. 7 South Carolina. Sandwiched between Florida and Georgia on Tennessee's schedule, Akron could be facing the Vols at an ideal time.

"Things have to go right," Bowden said. "They're a much more talented team than us, and they have a lot more athletic ability than we do and size than we do and speed than we do. They've got Georgia next week. Maybe they'll be thinking about Georgia."

There are lots of reasons Akron can't beat Tennessee, and we will start with the most obvious; they don't have as much talent. That said, looking by this team and arriving with a cocky attitude will open doors for an upset. How things went against Wyoming and again at the end of last season should provide plenty of reminder. Our secondary issues CAN NOT be allowed to continue when playing a team that throws the ball around the field like Akron. So Vols......come out focused, on fire, and E-X-E-C-U-T-E your positions! GO VOLS!!!

Dooley does not concern me as much as Chaney. Our offense went into panic mode last week as soon as the score was 20-20. To just reprise an old, bad memory, I still believe the biggest cause of Fulmer getting fired was Clawson (never would have happend had Cut still been here). Likewise, I think Chaney might be one of the biggest parts of the coaching problems at UT now. This week will not likely show much in regard to this question, but Georgia will be the real test. With the offensive talent on this team, there are NO excuses! I'm pulling for him and us to succeed, but I sure ain't yet convinced. GO VOLS!!

Will you please grow up? CGB is just saying what a lot of us think. Fact - Dooley is a career loser that should have never been hired in the first place. His overall coaching record is 28-35. He has never beaten a ranked team in his whole coaching career. He is a miserable 4-15 in SEC play. The only three teams he has beaten in the SEC is Kentucky, Vandy, and Ole Miss. Let me translate that for you. A ONCE PROUUD POWERHOUSE PROGRAM, IS NOW THE 4TH WORST TEAM IN THE LEAUGE!!!!!!! Time for a change, and now!!!!

But after the all too familiar collapse in the 2d half last Saturday vs a quality SEC team, I'm guessing on Sunday morning Oct 21st we'll be sittin at 3-5.

This disappointing pattern we follow each year has gotten old, and even more disappointing, all too predictable.

That's probably accurate, I'll be at the MSU game on the 13th with Jim Poteete and Harold Johnson (these guys are friends with Haslam Sr. and other big boosters/alums), and if UT isn't looking any better as far as team unity and playing hard CDD will be gone. The headline on this article is a little misleading. The headline is a partial quote of what he actually said. Say what you want to about the guy, but he is a good coach and will have that team ready to play to the best of their ability. I just wish we could say the same about Dooley and company.

I expect a bit of a let down early, on top of that we just might see some newer younger faces this week. But down the stretch we should pull away. This is a game to get the depth some experience. Also be a good game to pound the rock about 45 times, get that ground game churning before going into UGA. We don't have to rush for a TON of yards at UGA, just enough to make them respect. Much like we did for 2 1/2 quarters against UF.

As for Bowden...what's he supposed to say? We think we're gonna get murdered in Knoxville. Use your brains people.

Akron's passing attack should be a nice way for our secondary to get a lot of work. Let JHunt and CP get their 100 yds and their TD in the first half and then let them sit for the entire 2nd half, so the freshmen can get some experience. I'd like to see what Pig can do out there.

That wouldn't be good. The boo birds would be out in Neyland if that happens. All 70,000 of them. But seriously, we can all go back and forth, but Saturday's attendance should give us a good idea of where the fan support is of Dooley.

I still have visions of Terry on the Auburn side lines licking his lips and prancing back and forth, when he last played against UT. Auburn out played the Vols in that game and Terry knew he only needed a couple Min's more to win. I was on the edge of my seat the last Qtr screaming at the TV. I think that Game more than any other Terry coached killed his career. Terry is a coach and a great motivator . He is always fired up and he can make in game adjustments that are productive. We'll win handley but Terry will give it his all.

I keep saying it over and over. UT has to honor the 4 year contract or look just as bad as Little Lane. How could we expect a top notch coach to come here if we don't honor our contract obligations.

I like Dooley. But I fully believe that IF the Vols were to lose to Akron tomorrow that Hart would not wait until the end of the year to get rid of Dooley. I think that Sal would be made interim coach while the hunt goes on. But again I don't think there is anything going to happen this year.

And remember the Bama game is the day UT honors Fulmer. WTF were great minds in the AD dept thinking when that was scheduled? Alabubba was his biggest rival, and he'll be honored at half time when we are getting blown out (good news is we won't have to see a 2d half collapse cuz it already happened in the 1st half).

By then we've likely lost the previous 3 to other ranked SEC teams, are banged up and get whacked. So why would anyone think we will be competitive this 3rd Saturday in October? Other than lame's game where we could not hit a field goal we have not been in this game much past the 1st qtr in years.

So a lopsided whoopin by alabubba on our former HOF coach's big day smells like ill wind. Naa, AD Fart won't fire CDD after that, he'll look to the rest of the year and 'hope' for 6-6, which of course is an improvement from 5-7. Ugghh

I disagree because all coaches know that in the third year you should be showing solid improvement. Not to say that wont happen. We have 9 games to play. Plenty of time to show your making that improvement. Another losing season and we want have trouble hiring a big name I hope.
