Director of recruiting J.R. Sandlin no longer with UT football

J.R. Sandlin, who was hired from Alabama to be Tennessee’s director of recruiting, is no longer on staff, football coach Butch Jones confirmed Saturday.

“J.R. has moved on and is no longer part of the program,” Jones said.

There were no details on the circumstances of Sandlin’s departure and Sandlin could not be reached for comment. Jones said a search for a replacement was “ongoing.”

Sandlin, a Tuscaloosa native who played football at Central Florida, was on Alabama’s recruiting staff from 2010-2012. His UT bio said he managed day-to-day operations of the recruiting department and “helped Alabama secure the top-ranked classes in 2011 and 2012.”

Sandlin earned $55,000 annually at UT, according to salary figures provided to the News Sentinel earlier this year.

Keith Pantling, who accompanied Jones from Cincinnati and had the title of “recruiting assistant” at UT, left the program last month.

Recruiting staff members typically help the on-field coaches juggle recruiting duties, including processing film, communicating with high schools and other administrative tasks.

I agree but in a way Im also glad he's gone. I don't like Bama ties in UT. A bunch of Bama moles is what they are hahaha Even Dave Heart..... but he hasn't let me down yet. hehehe I wish JR luck in all his future jobs. Dooley as well.

I don't really question this at all. The salary, $55,000.00, isn't really high enough to get and keep topnotch talent. With recruiting being so important, it would look like a higher salary would be paid to someone with this kind of responsibility.

Why do you even need a director of recruiting when you a recruiting coordinator. This sounds like an office assistant type of job.

BruisedOrange writes:

I understand Jones letting go the "non-SEC" recruiting person. But now letting go the very successful SEC person...?

This almost sounds like a pre-emptive house cleaning. An Auburn taint? What are the rumors?

Of course, there could be private, personal reasons for it, too.

Everyone is looking for a positive or negative in this move. Maybe the guy just had an opportunity too good to pass up somewhere else. I'm sure his whereabouts will surface in the near future.

Just a guess here, but would think the coordinator is the "who" of recruiting and the director is the "what, when and where" as in arranging transportation, keeping track of money, etc., the details of business rather than the business itself.

Entry level, secretary position. This is not a big deal at all. Anybody that played a role in the recruiting process (scheduled buses, organized tapes etc.) could say that helped secure a recruiting class.

oldvol59 writes:

You are exactly correct. It's not "big" news at all.

With a salary of only $55,000 I'm not surprised at moving on...I would imagine this is a position that's not very stable....someone comes along and others an assistants job making $100,000....zip...you're gone...

Actually I think the responsibility level is in line with..say..a travel agent...he probably doesnt leave the office often and I would "shocked" if he ever went into a recruits home on a visit...most likely renting cars, scheduling flights, setting up meeting with high schools coaches, etc...

Yet you continue to hire a Alabama guy EVERY chance possible. Tryin to catch up with the CT, but to no avail. Copy the Saban model... how is that working out lol??????? 6 in a row and counting. Roll Tide

Every chance possible? Is that why we brought in a RB coach in from WVU, a wideout coach from Wisconsin, a recruiting ace from Auburn, along with our secondary coach?
If we wanted to hire bama, we would.

Butch Jones is a copy the Saban model?
Does a coherent thought ever cross your mind before you start talking?
From what I've seen, the answer is no.

BTW, is Birmingham still bankrupt?

First of all, it is a non profit. They do not pay corporate income taxes and are not a business. They lose money now and if they had to pay income tax like a real business they would be way more broke.

Regardless of what the job description says, this is a position that is administrative. He is not in charge of who they recruit, who they offer or even close. He could not evaluate a player if he had to. This is not a big deal except for the fact that he did something to get himself fired. That much is clear.

NashvillePreds,

Correct sir. Actually, no relevance to RTRchatterbox's comments.

Remember......he's merely a troll.

No kidding. It's more than likely he missed his girlfriend or momma.

This job is an admin role. It once was the Recruiting Coordinator (also an on field coach) but that changed when Nick Saban hired a crew of entry level assistants to perform all the pick, pack, and ship (twitter, Facebook, and txt).

Could be a lot of busy work for kind of low money. You definitley need good organizational skills.

In general, Athletic department employees should not have been with our SEC rivals. But there are exceptions...its a question of trust. It appears our AD is on the up and up but like all of them, they should be on the "short leash". We should probably be better served with key employees outside the conference.

That thought definetly crossed my mind but I was trying to give him the benefit of doubt.

WELL, now we know one thing that was wrong with recruiting. Mr. Sandlin may have been good at this position, who knows? But to think, an important position like this only paying $55,000 just made me go to the bathroom and throw up. It is no doubt true that the head coach does most of the recruiting, but this position has to set everything up, organize the recruiting trips, recruit visitations, provide the head coach with all the info about each recruit. I would hope this position meant a nice office, private secretary, and the whole nine yards.
C'mon Cheek, Hart and Jones...beef this position up and hire a UT person that can supercharge this recruiting. Recruiting rating equals team rating. What a piece of sad news. I am upset, big-time.

Uhhh, wait.

Didn't ToddyBoi grow up in Tuscaloosa? Doesn't he still live there??
