Tennessee tight end Mychal Rivera will play professional football in his home state.

Rivera was selected by the Oakland Raiders Saturday in the sixth round of the NFL draft. He was the 184th overall selection.

Rivera was the first UT player drafted Saturday, joining receivers Cordarrelle Patterson (first round, Minnesota Vikings) and Justin Hunter (second round, Tennessee Titans) among drafted players.

Former UT defensive tackle Montori Hughes, who completed his career at UT-Martin, was picked in the fifth round by the Indianapolis Colts.

Rivera, a native of Valencia, Calif., who began his college career at Oregon, caught 36 passes for 562 yards in a strong senior season for the Vols in 2012.

His sister Naya is a noted actress who plays Santana Lopez on the television musical comedy “Glee.”

This is a great pick up for Oakland, Mychal was 1st team SEC last year. Good luck Mr. Rivera.

Congrats to MR. He joins CP,JH, DT. Hopefully, there might be more. I was hoping someone might pick up Zach Rogers. The kid can fly. And wouldn't it have been grand if Herman Lathers had gone pro. Who could deserve it more?

Congrats to Mychal Rivera. Thought he would have been a higher pick but I thought the same thing about Witten and look how he turned out. Guess Bray's wishing he'd stuck around for another year about now. Reminds me of a country song about hindsight.

Raiders need a QB and Bray is from Cali maybe they'll take him or invite him as a free agent.

Bray should have stayed another year. Could have used some maturing. Life goes on.

Oakland's got several picks left; You never know. I think Bray would fit in a pro-set offense, he's got the talent, it's his work ethic that needs to change.

When deciding whether to leave school early, did TB ever consider the possibility that he might not even be drafted at all? I know he can still sign as an undrafted free agent, but look at all the guys ahead of him he would have to climb over. Makes you wonder who was giving him this horrible advice. This is one of those lessons you have learn the hard way.
Best wishes to Rivera who seems to have the drive and grit to make it with the Raiders.

I have mixed emotions about Tyler Bray. One part I feel bad for him because he's a Vol and clearly he got some bad advice. But, I also think it also summarizes his college career. Bad judgment. All the way back to when he did the throat slice jester during the UNC game I think it was. It's not so much that I define a person over one incident but rather let the events define themselves over time. If Bray had the work ethic Coach Cutcliffe would have made him a first rounder. Dooley did'nt help him any. Should have gotten his attention his soph yr. Really glad he has moved on. Scouting him you will see that he only goes through a 2 reciever progression and if they are not open in 2 seconds he will throw the ball away, he can not extend the play. Hopefully our next QB will be able give to the recievers 3 or 4 seconds to run a route.

its easy to talk about the advice he got but this draft stuff is not an exact science-----noone could have ever considered him going this late or not at all with his physical tools alone---hope he gets in but time is running out

TNPilgrim writes:

It could be that the advice Bray got was to stay for his senior season, and he ignored it. The kid isn't known for his ability to make sensible decisions, on or off the field. He'll be one of the most forgettable UT QBs ever.

There was a rumor that Tyler and Da'Rick walked off the field after the Kentucky game in 2011, and told their teammates they were glad UT wasn't bowl eligible because they didn't want to play in the MCB again.

And the word gets out. In Bray's defence, Dooley didn't do him any favors. He would have been a much better person and stood a better chance under Coach Butch in my opinion.

The blame lies on his parents. THey raised the self centered brat and failed to teach him humility and respect for others.

No doubt about that, and both were involved in off the field issues which certainly didn't help their cause.

The blame ultimately falls on UT for hiring a coach like Kiffin (with no morals or class). He recruited athletes like himself (Bray & B. Brown) gutless punks with inflated egos.

Correction: Maybe you didn't know but I believe it was quite obvious to most of us.

Da'Rick's self centered-ness got him booted from UT so there's one flag easily noted. Bray didn't do his football homework so why should he get his 'degree in football' to go play in the NFL?

Both these young men will probably make a team and at least for Rogers I think he'll be a starter for that matter one day. I hope they take this lesson and learn and not think it's 32 other teams' fault. They are Vols and wish them the best.

Bray had a good arm and that was it.His best games were against weak teams, against top teams he did not have a clue.As I said before you have to have a brain and be a quick thinker to play in the NFL,Bray was way short in that regard.I had him going in the 5th if a team wanted to take a chance.Guess their were no gamblers.

I realize most folks now think Derek Dooley invented canned biscuits and is the cause of every pestilence known to man. However, one thing he did not do is cause Tyler Bray not to get drafted. That is 100% on Bray and his sorry a-- attitude. All you need to know is Peyton Manning's opinion of him. Denver had a last pick and took a QB (Zac Dysart from Miami of Ohio). You don't think that Peyton could have made a call on Bray's behalf if he had wanted to help and maybe mentor Bray? I'm sure the Broncos would have used that 7th round pick if Peyton had asked but obviously he didn't think it was worth the trouble.

Good point, Tyler could have turned his career around learning under Manning. I do think he's so full of himself he would have ignored anything Peyton or the coaches' would have instructed. After all his instincts have been so successful to this point.

I thought they might take him as well, but when they drafted Tyler Wilson and then the Steelers took Landry Jones, it seemed likely that Tyler was in trouble of getting drafted at all. Meanwhile, Rivera will fit in nicely. He's showed some of that nasty Raider attitude, and I mean that as a compliment.

are you such a simpleton to think Tyler Bray solely wins games or loses games himself and the rest of the team has no part in the outcomes?????? Some of you folks are over the top in your hate. His off the field immaturity spoken of here was minor and unconsequential in the scheme of things, the LSU regular, repeat dope offender got drafted and well as a teammate just arrested 2 days ago. Bray deserved a better fate ------not even the TB haters could could have ever expected him to go unpicked. As for D'rick I dont have any sympathy for him as he did himself in with bad decisions of a larger magnitude than TB---how dumb do you have to be to trade in receiving passes from Bray at Tenn and getting national attention to getting no attention at a small school.

Bray slipped plum to the bottom of the draft and I hardly think the posters on GV are responsible.

Are you so simple to think Bray is a 1st round pick because he is tall and has a big arm? Not winning big games is only part of it. Bray has no mobility, no leadership skills, a questionable work ethic, immaturity and a bad self centered attitude. I am not surprised he didn't get drafted. This might be the best thing that has ever happened to him.

you never saw me claiming he was a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th round pick----I said he deserved better than what he got/ nothing. I'm not promoting him---agree with most of what you mentioned-- but if he was a complete nobody/ undeserving of even a round 7 pick bum then he wouldn't have made it to Grudens TV interview show when there were 15 other QBs he could have done it with. But to blame him for not winning big games when we had about the worst D in the country giving up 40 a game is just not fair-----he had plenty of help not winning big games

Actually I thought Bray would be a 5th, 6th, 7th round pick. He signed with the Dolphins. Last season wasn't all Bray, starts with Dooley, Sunseri. The problem with Bray is he is self centered, no leadership skills, he has a loser attitude, he has been given everything in life, hasn't worked his tail off to improve. Hopefully he will have a attitude ajustment and make it in the NFL.
