Five Big Things to watch as the Tennessee football team starts fall camp on Friday:
1 Every Rep Counts
Four quarterbacks want to be Tennessee’s starter but only one will. Justin Worley and Nathan Peterman have a head start. Maximizing every opportunity is imperative for newcomers Joshua Dobbs and Riley Ferguson.
2 Carry Over
The coaching staff demands that the players retain what they learned of new schemes in the spring. There’s no time to go back to Square One. This is especially true for a defense switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 look.
3 Dan the Man
It was surprising to hear Butch Jones say Wednesday that the Vols will go as far as Dan McCullers goes. That’s calling out the biggest Vol, the 360-pound defensive tackle, to be a difference-maker — and not just every now and then.
4 Better to Receive
Has a Vol receiver corps ever been this unproven? Snaps, jobs and catches are there for the taking in a wide-open competition. Jason Croom, Marquez North and Paul Harris are three to watch but others could emerge.
5 Freshman Impact
Receiver isn’t the only place a fresh face can find snaps in 2013. Two, three or more could nail down back-up roles in a depleted secondary. A D-lineman or two could also get in the rotation.
