The United States had a distinct Tennessee look to start the Mayor’s Cup in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson helped the U.S. to an 11-5 victory over Canada at Donna Terry Softball Stadium in the opener on Tuesday which was delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain.
Chavanne started at third base and hit second in the order, going 1-for-4 with a single, a walk, one RBI and two runs scored. Gibson stated at second base and hit third, going 1-for-3 with one single, one walk, two RBIs and a run scored.
Chavanne and Gibson did not play in 5-1 win over Argentina late Tuesday.
Tuesday’s first game marked the summer debut for Tennessee’ co-head coach Karen Weekly, who joined the Team USA staff as an assistant coach this week.
The U.S. plays Cuba and Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The playoffs are Thursday and Friday.
