KNOXVILLE — Tennessee’s athletic department unveiled a new video and an Instagram image early this morning, both promoting today’s date — “08.15.13″ — and dropping some strong hints about the Vols’ new uniforms.

As for hints about some color changes — including that it has been pointed out that "Smokey" (i.e., gray) is listed as an official school color on the university's website — continue reading at Evan's blog, Evan's Eleven.

Oh Geez. We've become a "me too" program? It's difficult to accept just how far we've dropped.

Shoot, I didn't even mind black jerseys on Halloweeen. Just please keep it simple and respect tradition.

I think the gray color (official Tennessee color, Smoky pms426) is a great idea. Know how this all came about? Coach Butch found it in the manual so blame it on him. Tell you what naysayers, ask the players what they think. Some folks just can't deal with change. It's really that simple

I'm one of those traditionalist, but that's just me. I like to think that Hank Aaron still owns the HR title and Babe Ruth was the greatest baseball icon to ever lace up his cleats. If done correctly UT could really sharpen a pretty dull uniform. The solid white pants (IMO) look like practice uniforms. In Butch I trust to not go too far. GBO!!

Pretty dull??????

Do you want to be like most of the rest of the SEC and have a shade of red or blue in the uniform? Talk about dull and un-original!! There's one Orange and White and it's not the team out in Austin that F'ed up the orange.

Sup BB! I think coach butch hit a homer when he had Spoelstra speak to the team. He spoke over an hour and the players were hanging on every word. Butch is doing all the right things.

Yep, Dull..White pants look like PSU without the stripe down the side. If you want complete tradition perhaps UT should go with leather helmets and khaki pants like the 1930's.

Like the attitude and feel the same. Knowing Jones and Athletic dept. I wouldn't expect anything flashy especially since we aren't a Nike school. Our young players want to look good and modern not like Red Grange. Oregon takes it way too far but their players and fans love it probably because they don't have much of a long term football tradition..Before the early 90's Oregon had like ZERO national televised games

Of course he did. He's carved his initials on the cornerstone of Neyland by now. My guess is the gray will be used as part of a checkerboard sleeve, pant stripe or number outline. Just guessing. He's doing everything else better than I could have ever imagined, so have to let him set his vision on the uniforms as well.

I don't mind minor tweaks. It's a unique and distinctive color scheme and is one of the most recognized college uniforms. I don't find that to be dull. The all white pants provides a good contrast in showing off that beautiful Tennessee orange.

I have always liked the way we stuck with Tradition, but like all things they also change. I don't believe the uniforms will change to much and if it helps with recruiting then Im all for it!! Sometimes you do things to keep up with the modern times. I dont wanna be another Oregon and I don't think we will even be close to that, but if these kids want it and it helps our overall program then go with it. Winning will cure any hard feelings that traditionalist like myself have! Go Vols!!!

It's not like they're gonna wear these new uniforms for EVERY home game. Maybe once or twice during the season. They'll still wear the Orange and Whites. Don't worry guys. These young athletes like cool uniforms. Current players play better, and in-coming recruits WANT to play in them. The best game we've played in the past few years was on Halloween in the Blacks. Change is good. Can't wait to see them.

I always found the idea of opposing team fans trash talking on another team's media pages perplexing. So many correlations between these wankers and bullies! When you are making your smart a** comment, do you get a rush when you are about to hit the enter key? Try and get a life!

I believe I would have made this "special" uniform much more flashy. I think it is somewhat plain. However, it may look very good on camera and on the field.

Even use it for another game or two. An all White uni, and all Orange uni, then they could mix it up some.

But, yeah, we in the 21st CENTURY now!

OK, hopefully they will wear them at one of the many cupcake games I won't be attending -- maybe the yearly pay-for-view game, since I won't even see that one on TV.

And I'm ok with wearing the black uniforms at Oct 31 Halloween night home games only, which means they will be worn once every 14 years or so.

Hmmm...Volquest link was posted while I was looking up the Pantone color. It is a 'light' black, or very, very dark grey.

Oh well, 'cept for the helment, I wuz pretty close. I'd have made the numbers a little bigger, but ....if this is what the players like and want then...

Bama fan here, so don't get too mad at me. While I think the grey unis look pretty cool, the Big ORANGE didn't build it's history of hard-hitting, dominating football by wearing some color that couldn't make up it's mind if it wanted to be black or white. Oh, the orange jersey & pants combo looks pretty silly (like Derrek Dooley) but the contrast Orange/White & White/Orange unis are staples of college football and something every Vol & Vol fan should be damn proud of.

I suggest actually going to volquest and reading the article that goes along with these. There are several subtle tweaks as well that pay tribute to teams of UT past, including the '98 NC team and the '51 NC team. I think they look pretty sweet myself. The article suggests that these will be used at home against either UGA, USC, or Auburn.

The more I think about it; the angrier I get!!! Our school colors have ALWAYS been Orange & White & that's the way it should stay! Period.

Whomever decided they had the authority to change our school's colors needs to be fired immediately or given a stern warning & a History lesson! And I don't care if it was the President, or Jones or Hart, etc. No one has the right to change our school's colors. I thought the black & orange Halloween thing was atrocious, but that was ONE game. Coach Jones, we're not Oregon & we don't want to be Oregon. We're UT and our colors are Orange & White!!! Pls wear those "new" uniforms one time for an away game at Austin Peay or somewhere & then let's go back to our tradition! Please!

Always a Vol - Orange & White Vol

those are a TON of colors! hopefully we stick to just the PRIMARY colors: orange, white, and smokey.

like coach jones said:

"Everything is about our great pride and traditions here at the University of Tennessee," Jones told VolQuest.com. "We truly respect those traditions, but it's also building upon those traditions. Before anything can be a tradition, it has to have a beginning to it. Just like the Vol Navy, just like the Vol Walk, just like the 'Power T.' So when we looked at it, it was how can we continue to move forward. As you know, in the world of recruiting this is the world we live in.

"If you had to put a top-10 list that the prospective student-athletes ask you, in the top three would be uniforms. We obviously have great colors, and we're excited about the 'Smokey' gray addition to our traditions and our family here. A lot of thought went into this. We wanted to be very respective of our traditions, but also continue to move forward in this as well."

i'm all for it.
