Tennessee football coach Butch Jones has gained another high-profile brick for which to build Team 118.

Josh Malone of Station Camp High School in Gallatin (rated as a 4-star recruit by 247Sports and in the 247Composite, but as a 5-star by Rivals) gave his verbal commitment to the Vols on Wednesday afternoon, picking Tennessee during a ceremony at his high school and on national television on NBC Sports Network.

Malone began his press conference by reading from a prepared statement, thanking God "for the ability to play football," his family for its support, coaches in the recruiting process and all of his Station Camp teammates and coaches. After taking a deep breath, he uttered the words Tennessee fans have been waiting to hear.

"Finally, after several family discussions and hours of prayer, I have decided to play football for the University of Tennessee," he said.

Malone, who won the Class AAA Mr. Football Back award on Monday, is ranked as the No. 44 overall player in the nation (the No. 5 wide receiver) by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He chose Tennessee over Clemson, Georgia, Florida State and Ohio State.

"I chose Tennessee just because I felt like I had a better opportunity there," Malone said on The Sports Dash broadcast.

Malone, who is 6-foot-2.5 and 190 pounds, finished this past season with 71 receptions for 1,404 yards and 19 receiving touchdowns. He also had 23 rushes for 227 yards and three scores to lead Station Camp to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

This feels better than beating Vandy would have... I think. Explains why we put off Booth till Feb. if even then, knowing he wanted to come in January. Jones knew he was coming. I hope we can get to 6 wins next yr and be ready to make our move.

Yee Haw! Somebody is doing something right on the hill!

Who's next?

By the way... What exactly determines how many scholarships are available in Jan. for early enrollees? I assume it has to do with how many players leave school in Dec. or graduate in Dec.
plus how many we are currently under the cap already? Anybody know for sure?

The best thing about this class is Coach Jones will play 'em. Couple late linemen and some judicious editing.....this group will show up on the field next year.

Go Team 118!

Dare I say...Welcome to Wide Receiver U!

This is just fantastic. Now if we can get a five star quarterback we will be in business. If there still is a five star out there, not committed, I think it would be a golden opportunity for a guy to play four years with a great class. Go Vols.

Fantastic - well played.

Now we need a quarterback to throw to all the guys. Dobbs is a great guy and a great teammate - but I promise you - he is not top-tier SEC caliber. and another year is not going to get him there. he is not the answer.

Welcome Josh - glad you signed with Tennessee - looking forward to watching you play

Ferguson has been groomed for this role. You would have already seen him had he not had a fractured tibia from practice mid-season. Dobbs will have some serious work to do to remain the starter. The incoming WRs are aware of Ferguson and his talent.

Guys like Malone, Hurd, etc. are game changers and can dramatically affect the direction of a program.

Butch is making a difference.

MurrayVol, Please remember that Positive, Rational and non-slanderous statements are normally not well received on this website. Please choose your words wisely in the future. On a serious note, I am in total agreement and hope all the former “All Americans” that try to tear down our players both young and old on this site would spend a few days in their shoes in August 2 a-days. I have and that is why I am pleased at the progress we have made. Long way to go but each new commitment along with positive and tough minded coaching will get us to the promise land. Good Cheer and Merry Orange Christmas to all True Volunteer grads and fans world wide.

Tennessee has done unusually well with attracting top in-state talent this year. And, it's been an unusually good year for in-state talent as well. Last I checked, Tennessee has over 30 kids who are legitimate BCS recruits in 2014. That's some kind of record for the state. And, none of the top guys are headed to Alabama. This portends well for the future under Jones, but he still has to prove he can win with these guys.

The 2014 class will be a benchmark class for Jones, because if they all sign and can contribute early and win, then the floodgates will open. It's apparent that a lot of them are intrigued by UT because they have the opportunity to come in as freshman and have the opportunity to play right away. But, in order for them and the program to succeed, they'll have to either win, or show consistent improvement during the 2014 season, which will be no cakewalk.

The takeaway is this - win or improve greatly in 2014, and 2015 and beyond recruits will take notice. Break even or lose, and those same recruits very well could be spooked. It shouldn't be that way, but in the "what have you done for me lately" world of CF, that's the way it is.
