KNOXVILLE — Monday on the News Sentinel Sports Page, host Vince Ferrara and co-host News Sentinel high school sports reporter Jesse Smithey welcomed Ryan Callahan from govols247.com to the show.

Earlier in the day, 247Sports announced their Freshman All-American team. Two Vols, wide receiver Marquez North and defensive back Cameron Sutton, were named second-team selections.

"I think Sutton especially is the guy that flew under the radar outside the state of Tennessee," said Callahan.

"But I think it's a well deserved honor on his part. Quietly, on of the better true freshmen in the conference and certainly in country. Both those guys are obviously fitting recipients of that title."

Jesse Smithey asked Callahan what coaches can and cannot do right now as far as recruiting new players.

"As of 12 last night, we are now in the dead period, which is a little confusing for some people. I think some people think it means essentially recruiting stops and that's definitely not the case, phone calls are still allowed.

"The only thing that means is that there basically can't be any contact between coaches and players. Coaches can't be on the road now for the next few weeks and players cannot make visits of any kind during that time.

"The dead period because of some recent rules changes is a little bit longer this year. It runs from Dec. 16 all the way through Jan. 15, so they've added several days to that dead period - basically a full month now. So for the next few weeks everybody gets a break from visits. But still plenty of recruiting will be going on, plenty of contacts by phone and players can continue calling coaches any time they want."
