Tennessee's Mercedes Russell has been named SEC freshman of the week, the league announced on Monday.

The 6-foot-6 center scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds in Sunday's 110-42 women's basketball rout of Lipscomb at Thompson-Boling Arena. She also recorded five blocks and two assists in 19 playing minutes.

Russell shot 5 for 8 from the floor and was 2 for 3 from the free throw line.

Tennessee opens conference play against LSU on Thursday at the arena.

She is getting more comfortable with each game. The sky is the limit!

Keep it up, Mercedes! Play the game the way you KNOW to play the game. Catch the ball and score the ball; contest the shot and secure the rebound; never give up on a play. Same stuff you've been told every day you ever stood in front of a coach. You have greatness in you--SEIZE IT!

I think good things happen when Jordan and Russell plays at the same time.
