Barely two months into his Tennessee tenure, Butch Jones is getting a crash course on life in the SEC.
As national signing day dawns, Jones has secured a list of verbal commitments that ranks No. 24 in the nation, according to Rivals.com.
That’s the good news.
The bad news: UT’s class ranks just 11th in the SEC.
You’re judged by the company you keep, and the Vols are running in fast company. Seven SEC schools rank in the top 12 on Rivals’ list. It is an embarrassment of riches, but nobody in the SEC is apologizing. In this conference, you recruit great classes year after year or you fall behind.

Decent recruiting class but has to be better next year,if Tennessee is to compete like in old days.

I expect UT to have a very good class next year. Excitement of a new coach, lots of openings for immediate playing time if not starting from day 1, this is a good combination for a good to great class.
The question on Jones' recruiting skill won't be answered until year 3. Year 2 should be a big class and fill up almost all the gaps on the depth chart. The Year 3 kids won't have the same level of opportunity for early playing time. That's when you will see if he can sell the program, the facilities, the campus, the education, because he won't be able to sell a lot of early playing time.

Not that it matters, but Rivals ranks Tennessee at 20, not 24.
