KNOXVILLE — For just the second time since he became the Tennessee football coach on Dec. 7 of last year, Butch Jones will return to his Cincinnati home Friday to spend some long overdue quality time with his wife Barbara and three sons.

"I'm going to watch [Alex] play basketball that night," Jones said Wednesday afternoon following his national signing day news conference. "It will be the first day I've taken off since I was hired."

He'd earlier quipped, "I'm going to buy stock in 5-Hour Energy."

Hard work doesn't always bring results. And after enduring four losing seasons in the past five years, the Big Orange Nation wants results they can believe in, results that -- as one UT athletic department employee noted Tuesday -- "bring hope for a brighter future."

First. 11 out of 12 in the SEC. Not a bad way to start the rebuild.

Correction 11 of 14. I am still stuck in the old SEC, where we used to win more than one or two SEC games per season. Please forgive me, it has been a long couple of years for me and UT Men's Athletics.

Headline doesn't fit the writing in the story?? Got some nice help at QB and WR but beyond that not so much..Losing Skipper; the 2 juco's and then Bell stings a lot..Gonna need to fill the gaps with some Juco's but that cupboard was raided too. Only 2 OT's; Zero DL's and a reach of a RB will not cut it!! Hard for this team to turn the corner when LSU signed 20 4stars and GA 14 4stars not to mention the all world classes FLA; Bama and Ole miss had..If we brought Neyland and Lomardi back from the dead we would still get drilled by Bama and Gators because the talent just doesn't stack up..Long road ahead but folks want to win now..If nothing else we will see a nice change in player attitude and more overall team spirit and unity..IMO most of the players disliked and didn't respect Dooley and now that cloud has parted!!!

UT can get back to being one of the top dogs in the SEC, but CBJ is gonna have to win some games he isn't expected to. If UT continues to stay in squallor at the bottom of the league it's almost impossibile to recruit the 4 and 5 star players they need to compete with the top teams in the conference.

Nothing will change until this cycle of losing is broken.

You've got to win some games you aren't supposed to win, just like UT got into this mess by losing too many games they were supposed to win.

It has to start somewhere. This coming season is a chance to flip the script.

If not....expect another 20-30th ranked class again next yr. and just getting deeper in the hole.

You gotta win some games. There's no other answer. It sounds so simple but it's the way it is.

JSmith,

Very well said. We get a bit tired of saying this, but trolls like the rtrChatterbox and brass *** monkey have always been this way so don't ever expect them to change.

The biggest question in our minds is why some of these trolls such as rtrchatterbox, supposedly fans of another school, have spent all this time on GoVolsExtra. We are Tennessee fans and have no interest in hanging out on some other school's message boards.

Still, there is this compulsive attraction to our Vols' site that these trolls cannot resist. Really does clue you in to the sort of people they must be when not hanging out here all the time, doesn't it?

I learned one thing on these boards when I first started to post. If you post anything negative or something that could be viewed as negative about UT and you claim to be a Vol fan you will be called a troll. So...all things UT should be spun to a positive view as difficult as that might be. You must deny in the face of the obvious that what you are seeing is in fact real. I have stated form sometime that our UT football program is lost in the weeds and will be lost for years to come. I agree that only victories will change that. I agree also that if a bigtime coach hire could have been made similar to Nick Saban at Alabama it could have flipped the script immediately, but that was not to be. Having said that we must stop all the mindless shaker waving and rockytop singing and ole smoky howling. Look at the program with clear unbiased eyes and state the truth. End the predictible yada yada yada about winning unwinnable games next year etc. Face the facts it will take a lot of hard work, patient fans who support CBJ and give him the time to rebuild our once proud and successful program. Given the time and support it is possible to be a player once again in the East. Please stop the unrealistic comments about this class and face the fact that it is was very weak for an SEC school. We still don't have a RB who is capable of doing what needs to be done. That one issue should be a clue as to the problems that face CBJ and his staff in luring players to the hill. The reputation of UT has fallen so low over the last 7 years that the recruits don't remember UT as a relevant program. They are viewed as a cellar dweller that plays no part in the SEC. They are viewed on the same level as Kentucky nowhere near Vandy at the present time as Vandy is on the rise. WE WILL BE BACK but when it will happen seems to be a hard one to predict.

84,

No one is calling you a troll. Out of all you said, it therefore reults in this statement which sums it up and most of us will agree with " it will take a lot of hard work, patient fans who support CBJ and give him time to rebuild our once and successful program."

Can't disagree with that at all !

I feel there is a big difference between being negative and being realistic about UT. The known trolls on here, who try to act like they are UT fans, constantly complain about everything. The fans might bring up concerns about the Vols, but hopefully most of them can see positive things about where the program is going.
How can someone complain about Butch Jones when he hasn't even coached a single game at Tennessee? He has way more college experience than Jon Gruden (thankfully we didn't get him).
Jones impressed me with getting top players to consider us when we weren't even in the game under Dooley. We almost got Von Bell over two of the top recruiters in Saban and Meyer.
How is it unrealistic that this a decent class? Add a couple of high rated players and you would be praising it. There is a good possiblity we could get a large class next year.
And no I don't feel we will beat Oregon or Alabama, but that doesn't mean all of rest are unwinnable. We are down as compared to most of the SEC, but that doesn't mean Jones and staff can't coach them up.
The worst are people complaining about his "Best Coaching staff" comment. How do you know this isn't the best staff for Coach Jones, they are all on the same page with him and his coaching style.
But I do respect your comments about being patient, and agree with them.

You forgot all the grief you dumped on other fans when their teams weren't playing well. Now the shoe's on the other foot and you can't take it. Bama is going for7 in a row this year and like the last six, it will be a butt kicking. Roll Tide.

Florida was the dynasty before Bama. USC was before FL. FL State was before USC. Miami was before FL State. Notre Dame was before Miami. Ohio State or LSU may be the next dynasty.

We are not Alabama, OK? Now lets give Coach Jones a chance. It's not HIS fault we are in this situation. Start by building a fence around TN, get the top 15 players in TN and 10 from elsewhere and we will be fine!!!!!!

As un-exciting as the state of Tennessee normally is in high school fb, UT absolutely must be able to take the best of what's there on a consistant basis. With Jones, I feel we have made a significant start in that direction. Being "down" four straight years is naturally going to weigh against any college coach trying to reverse history. It's a long way back but there's reason for hope.

Best quote of signing day:
"You can't go to the Kentucky Derby with a donkey".

Real pessimistic people that give out negative waves.

The top 15 players from the state of TN will assure us of a losing record every year. There are in most years 6 or 7 kids in TN who can start in the SEC.
Does anyone know what the Brentwood Academy coach's problem is with UT? I generally think BA is a joke but I do find it strange that none of those kids ever goes to UT. Thinking that coach has got something up his rear.
