The News Sentinel was honored nine times in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors contest, the most by any newspaper in its circulation division.
Winners covering work done during 2012 were announced at the APSE's winter conference in Orlando, Fla., this week.
Included in the 75,001-175,000 division was a top 10 for special section. The 38-page section on the career of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt was designed by Jennifer Dedman and the content by beat writer Dan Fleser.
The News Sentinel also received honorable mention distinction for daily newspapers, placing it among the top 20 sports sections.
Selected among the top 10:
UT men's basketball beat writer Brendan F. Quinn for his portfolio in the beat writing category. Quinn also was honored in explanatory writing for his comprehensive look at salaries in the UT athletic department and subsequent layoffs..
Senior columnist John Adams for his body of work in column writing.
UT football writer Evan Woodbery in breaking news for coverage for the firing of coach Derek Dooley.
News side reporters Matt Lakin and Megan Boehnke in breaking news for coverage of the investigation into former UT men's swimming coach John Trembley.
The News Sentinel also placed two entries in the top 10 in multimedia for websites with monthly unique visitors under 2 million. Honored were Erin Chapin, Lauren Spuhler and Rachel Wise for the Tookie Stanford documentary and also Chapin for a video tribute to Summitt.
The top five and overall winners in the writing and multimedia divisions will be announced in April.

aside from Pat are there ever any positive stories? Even when a struggling basketball team finds ways to win there is still a distinct "out of town" newspaper style that lends little upbeat support of the program.

obviously these foreigners, Yankees, liberal elites, vol-haters, and toejam sniffers have never read the kns... never sensed the shame and disregard for the average vol fan between the lines, yea even in the lines of the poison pen hacks of the kns. why, these sportswriters ain't even from around here. claiborneh, greervol22 and all the other literary critics we are blessed to have in east Tennessee know that john adams et al hate the vols and love to stick it to the vol nation at every opportunity. they go out of their way to create snarky sarcasm to make us look bad and feel bad. they never praise and uplift. when they do tell the truth, it's almost always bad. that's why I ignore every one of these awards that comes the news-sentinel's way. what does the ap know anyway? they should give the awards to the Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, and Lexington papers. those guys know where their bread is buttered. no negativity there. so why do we get stuck with the most illiterate, vile, ignorant sportswriters on the planet? because the most knowledgeable vol fans don't have the time to sit around and chew the fat with coaches and players and type at a keyboard. they have real jobs. (most of them) so thankfully at least they have time to thoughtfully comment on the stupid articles posted by this know-nothing kns staff. thank god for tomcat, tovolny, and their intellectual counterparts. FIGHT ON FANS! one day we'll get some real sportswriters in here!
