Two-out rally in ninth falls short for Vols in baseball opener, 10-9

A two-out, ninth-inning rally came up short late Friday night as the Tennessee baseball team opened the 2013 season with a 10-9 loss to UNLV in Las Vegas.

UNLV scored three times in the eighth to take a 10-8 lead. The Vols, who had leads of 2-0, 6-3 and 8-7, scored a run in the ninth when David Houser was hit by a pitch, Derek Lance walked and Will Maddox, who had been 0-for-4, singled to score Lance. A.J. Simcox, however, hit a liner on the first pitch he saw to UNLV's first baseman to end the game.

Junior Scott Price had five of the Vols' 13 hits. He had four singles and a double. It was the first five-hit game for a UT player since Matt Duffy and P.J. Polk each did it against Georgia in 2010.

Christin Stewart, Vance Vizcaino and Houser, all freshmen, each had two hits.

The teams play a doubleheader —a 7-inning game, then a 9-inning game — today before ending the series with a game on Sunday.

Softball: Shutout pitching from Erin Gabriel and Ivy Renfroe powered No. 4 Tennessee to a pair of softball wins Friday, 8-0 over Coastal Carolina and 7-0 over North Carolina State.

Gabriel, a freshman, fired a 1-hitter against Coastal Carolina on opening day of the USF 4 Team Tournament in Tampa, Fla.

Tennessee (7-0) got two RBI each from Melissa Brown, Rainey Gaffin and Madison Shipman.

Gabriel (2-0) struck out eight batters in six innings.

Earlier Friday, Renfroe (2-0) struck out seven Wolfpack batters as UT handed N.C. State ace Emily Weiman (4-1) her first loss.

Cheyanne Tarango and Lauren Gibson each drove in a pair of runs. Raven Chavanne had two hits.

Today, Tennessee takes on host and No. 12 South Florida today at 1:15. Seeded games begin later in the day.

The tournament concludes Sunday.

Men's Tennis: UCLA ousted Tennessee 4-1 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle.

Mikelis Libietis' 6-3, 6-4 victory over Denis Novikov at No. 1 singles was the Vols' only highlight against the third-ranked Bruins.

UCLA (8-0) halted Brandon Fickey's 10-match win streak and Hunter Reese's 12-match streak.

The Vols (11-2) take on Ole Miss in the consolation bracket. The Rebels lost 4-0 to Georgia.

Women's Golf: The Lady Vols are second, one stroke behind Georgia, after the first round of the Florida State Match-Up Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla.

UT shot a 3-over-par 291, paced by Erica Popson's 2-under 70, which was good for third place. Chessey Thomas' 72 tied for fifth.

AJ Newell shot 73, Sara Monberg 76 and Daeun Song 82.

The 12-team tournament continues today.

At least the women seem to be playing well..As for the baseball team, they will struggle unless they figure out how to close games out. No real closers equates to losses.

Game 1 in the books so we move on to the dbl header. I'm sure Coach Serrano knows the value of the closer and they will be trying people with the right stuff and mentality to nail it down.

This could be the year for the Lady Vols softball team.

I am not convenced that Coach Serrano is the answer for the Vols baseball team. Last seanson was one hugh disappointment. The team lacks the mental toughness that was there when they were considered a top SEC team. I hope it all works out but so far the disappointment continues.

As long as they utilize a safety squeeze like they didn't do against Zona a few years back. That still galls me to this day.

Convince(aka convenced) me otherwise after ONE game.....last season was disappointing...of course, disappointment comes when expectations aren't met. Look at the roster and definite youth flavoring. How about we play some more games b4 we toss in the seanson...like 20 or so...

The only thing more boring than women's basketball is women's softball.whoever heard of two head coaches. Weeklys bunt too much and slap too much to win it all.

Sentinel needs to highlight when they change sports. Maybe I wasn't reading as closely as I could have been, but it's confusing to be reading about a baseball game with UNLV and see Melissa Brown had 2 RBI. All they need to do is highlight the word "softball" and it will be a lot less confusing.
