The Tennessee softball team ran its record to 11-0 and co-head coach Karen Weekly won her 800th career game Thursday with a 7-0 victory over Long Beach State in the first game of the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
“It’s a privilege to be able to coach long enough to be a part of 800 victories,” Weekly said. “All of the credit goes to the players and coaches who I’ve been blessed to work with. I owe so much to my husband and co-head coach Ralph, who has been the biggest influence in my career. I have also been fortunate to work for tremendously supportive administrations at UT Chattanooga and Tennessee, who made winning a priority.”
The fourth-ranked Lady Vols, who had their sixth shutout of the season, had 11 hits and took advantage of nine walks and three Long Beach State (4-5) errors.
Raven Chavanne, Kat Dotson and Madison Shipman combined to go 6-for-10 with four runs scored, five walks and three RBIs.
Ellen Renfroe (5-0) gave up five hits in four innings, striking out six. Freshmen Erin Gabriel came on in relief and held the 49ers scoreless, giving up two hits and striking out three in three innings.
Tennessee played Cal State Fullerton late Thursday night and will play Northwestern (4 p.m. Eastern) and UCLA (6:30) today.

Good to win ,but left way too many runners stranded on base. Also , Ellen and Erin both had some bases loaded situations ,which they got out of ,that could be trouble with the better teams. Yes, they either struck them out or the D picked them up.

I'll be curious to see who emerges as this team's best pitcher. Maybe it's already known?

Hard to argue with 11-0. Love my softbball. Had to quit coaching my daughters (2nd base) teams when after seven years she told me she was tired of always being 'the coaches daughter'.
These ladies will do well this year. Great to have two capable pitchers. It's a good sign no one blew up with bases loaded and they finished the innings. Be ready. Stay focused!
