LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky center Willie Cauley-Stein's week of career highs has earned the Wildcats' big man his second Southeastern Conference freshman of the week selection.
A backup to Nerlens Noel before his fellow freshman's season-ending left knee injury on Feb. 12 at Florida, the 7-foot Cauley-Stein had big games against Missouri. His post presence helped the Wildcats (19-8, 10-4) build their credentials for an at-large NCAA tournament bid — if needed.
Cauley-Stein blocked a career-high seven shots and tied a career best with 12 rebounds Saturday in a 90-83 overtime over Missouri. In Kentucky's 74-7 victory Wednesday against Vanderbilt, he had a career-high 20 points on 8 of 10 shooting, a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks.
The Olathe, Kan., native averaged 13.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and five blocks for the week.
