Lady Vols can't get the big hit at College of Charleston, 3-1

College of Charleston scored a run in the fifth inning and twice in the sixth Thursday afternoon to beat the seventh-ranked Tennessee softball team 3-1 at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

UT led 1-0 after the first inning on a two-out single by Lauren Gibson before College of Charleston (7-3) tied it in the fifth.

Tennessee (14-3), which left the bases loaded in the second, had two runners on in the seventh, but could not get the hit it needed.

Ivy Renfroe (5-1) took the loss, allowing all three runs — two earned — in 3 1/3 innings of relief of sister Ellen Renfroe, who struck out three in 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Hope Klicker (4-2) allowed a run, four hits and struck out six, throwing a complete game for Charleston.

UT will play in the Buccaneer Invitational in North Charleston against UNC-Wilmington (1 p.m.) and Charleston Southern (3 p.m.) today. The Lady Vols will play UNC-Wilmington and Valparaiso on Saturday before concluding their non-conference tournament schedule against Charleston Southern on Sunday.

I attended the game. This CofC team is very good. Their pitcher pitched a great game. Let's also keep in mind that the Lady Vols have a target on their back and get every teams best game.

Its hard to drive from Knoxville, get off the bus and go play a softball game. I could feel the Lady Cougars had more energy.

They'll sweep the weekend.

No last year Akamine and Tarango were freshmen still learning the speed of the game. Kat and Raven were hurt too and niether hit a homerun. Both have hit 4 or 5 this year already. Shipman is also 100% healthy and will have a bigger year than last. Ralph has wore them out trying to get them to be the toughest team in Oklahoma City this year. I wouldn't put much on any of the 3 losses. They all were under pretty stressed circumstances. Alabama comes to town next weekend and the proof will be in the pudding.
