Geoff Calkins: Ex-Vol Dave Bennett locked in biggest battle yet

Editor's note: Former Vol Dave Bennett died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, Here is a story The Commercial Appeal's Geoff Calkins wrote in 2011 when Bennett was diagnosed with ALS.

He wiped out on a snowboard. The last day of the trip. Doesn't it always work out that way?

"It was a bad fall," said Paige Bennett. "He got a concussion."

Yeah, well, it wasn't his first one of those. Dave Bennett used to collect them all the time when he played football at Tennessee. He was a safety. Which is a strange word for the position, honestly, because nothing much was safe when Bennett was involved.

"He was the headhunter," said Paige.

Still remember him during the Notre Dame game at South Bend while UT was coming from behind and he was talking to the tv cameras saying "There ain't no ghosts here."
