MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Brent Musburger was mightily impressed by Alabama in its rout of Notre Dame in the BCS title game. The same could be said about the ESPN broadcaster and the girlfriend of Crimson Tide quarterback AJ McCarron.

During the network's Monday night telecast, the camera lingered early in the game on model Katherine Webb, who was in the stands with her mother.

Webb is Miss Alabama, and the 73-year-old Musburger remarked on this "beautiful woman," adding a "Whoa!" at another moment of admiration. Musburger also had this observation: "You quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women."

With suspense at a minimum in the Tide's 42-14 romp over the Irish, Webb created a bit of online frenzy. She gained more than 90,000 Twitter followers throughout the game. Among them was Arizona Cardinals defensive linemen Darnell Docket, who tweeted his phone number to her.

I thought the comments were strange and out of place, but did no harm to anyone except maybe Musburger's WIFE or Family, if he has one.

Not only did he NOT broadcast the game with professionalism, he knows nothing about football. He was one sided making it known he was for ND. He should be banned from broadcasting football at any level. I had to mute the game to enjoy what the Tide did to ND. Herb should refuse to do a game on TV with him in the future, IF there is a future for him. Other stations would get rid of him.

Tomkat,

I concur 100%. On the separate column about the game, I made similar comments. Musberger went on and on about this young lady, as if he'd never seen a beautiful girl before. It was a bit creepy. Then, on 2 occasions, he couldn't tell where the line of scrimmage was.........missing one call by 5 yards and another by 2 or 3. Once we saw who the broadcasters were going to be, it was a bit of a disappointment. Can you imagine Musberger and Vern Lundquist teaming up?

Next, how about the t.v.camera following
McCarron and his center around after their little confrontation which resulted in a Bama timeout. A bit of sensationalism it seemed.

Everyone has their favorite announcers, and most of the time one of the two will be great........the other one pretty average at best.

Seriously? "Amazing job"? He was canned and corny 30 years ago - now he's 73 and just bad. He needs to be retired from ESPN & ABC, along with Lundquist from CBS. It's time to give young commentators like Gus Johnson these big games. Lundquist and Musburger need to go.

While you are at it, can you do something with Bob Kessling?

AllforTenn writes:

I thought Musberger seemed a bit biased toward Notre Dame at times but overall he is as good as most any other sports broadcaster. I can't fault him much since he publicly stated that he voted for Peyton for the Heisman, whereas the a-hole Keith Jackson voted for and spoke up for Woodson, just because he wanted a defensive player to have it.

Actually, I don't think this is the first time he has said something like this. Didn't both he and Keith Jackson always make comments when the camera scanned the cheerleaders, majoretes (sp) and even the stands, comment on how beautiful the southern women are? Don't want to sound creepy but if you compare SEC women with say Big 10 women, well....., there is no comparison.

I work for a small newspaper and I have to be careful not to make reference to the "attractive coed" or the "cute blonde point guard."

Would Musberger made a similar comment if he had been doing the women's basketball championship game and one of the star players was dating a body builder that was the reigning Mr. Arizona? And would those of you defending Musberger think he was right to say that Mr. Arizona was hot?

Musberger over stepped the line of professionalism and he at least should make a public apology for those that he might have offended. ABC/ESPN should then put him out to pasture.

Sounds like jealousy to me? Maybe more from you than the angle you are trying to play with your daughter. Athletes get girls that are out of their league all the time. I hate Bama more than any other team but to believe that the starting QB and 2 time defending national champion is dating Miss Alabama is not that far of a reach for me.
Also, those on here saying that she isn't hot are just jealous. I love when models are discussed and people say well she is too skinny or I don't think she is all that. That's because you couldn't have her in a million years. She is smoking hot along with all the other contestants from the Miss America pageant.
I thought the comments by Musberger were fine. She didn't have a problem with them either. The game was out of hand and he was making a joke about how kids should start trying to be a QB in Alabama because they are winning championships and dating models. Hate on Bama because they have a history of cheating and their fans are delusional and they are our biggest rival. But why hate on their QB for winning 2 in a row and dating a model? Again, comes off more like jealousy to me

It is a given that Mr. Arizona is hotter than Mr. Montana, or Mr. Minnesota for that matter. Especially in January.
