John Adams, Joe Biddle and Harold Harris are to be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame in July.

News Sentinel columnist John Adams is among three journalists selected for induction into the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame.

Nashville columnist Joe Biddle and the late Harold Harris, who worked at the News Sentinel for 45 years, also will be inducted on July 11-12 at Cumberland University in Lebanon.

"It's always nice to be honored by your peers," Adams said. "It's especially gratifying to be inducted with Joe Biddle, a very talented writer and a longtime friend."

A native of Clinton, La., Adams was hired as editor of his hometown paper while still a student at LSU. He graduated and joined the Army, working on a post newspaper at Fort Riley, Kan. He resumed his career at Port Lavaca, Texas, covering the local PL Sandcrabs, and then Victoria, Texas. Adams' career also included stops in Jackson, Miss., Shreveport, Baton Rouge and Jacksonville, Fla., where he was a columnist for the afternoon paper. In between, he covered the Pittsburgh Steelers for a year.

Adams joined the News Sentinel in 1987. In addition to the SEC football circuit, he's covered many Super Bowls, Masters, heavyweight championship bouts, Kentucky Derbys, Final Fours and World Series, as well as the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Harris grew up in Knoxville and played center at Knoxville High and Tennessee Wesleyan. He covered UT football and basketball regularly in the 1940s, '50s and '60s with a regular column was called "Sports Static.''

Harris also covered small college athletics, the Knoxville Smokies and bowling. His brother Ed Harris was inducted into the TSWA Hall of Fame in 2009. Harold Harris was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the East Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame in 1981, and he was inducted to the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He died in 1992 at age 78.

Biddle, a native of Johnson City, attended East Tennessee State and worked for the Johnson City Press-Chronicle and Daytona Beach News Journal before he returned to Tennessee in 1979. He worked for the Nashville Banner before moving to The Tennessean in 1998.

Biddle is a four-time Tennessee Sportswriter of the Year from the Tennessee Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Biddle now writes a column on Tennessee sports for WKRN-TV.

I thought... "I can't be reading this correctly..." Hall of Shame, maybe, but definitely not the any kind of Hall of Fame for the great Vol Basher. Heck... even Florida and Bammer writers don't bash the Vols or stir up as much phooey for us as Adams does. What idiots pick these candidates for recognition?

Agreed, I never quite understood critism of JA when pointing out shortfalls when the Vols are playing 600 ball...or worse.

Well deserved IMO. Thanks for giving me something interesting to read about on a daily basis. You're articles are straight forward and you don't hold anything back, even if it means offending a few folks along the way.

Congrats on the Nomination.

Well this is quite an honor and good for JA. There's no reason at all for people to blow this off or throw in the hate mail. The guy works hard and has performed for a lot of years. I respect that a lot.

I've lived in several cities throughout the country and I've NEVER seen a sports writer who trashed the local team as much as Adams does and still retains his job. A disgrace to Tennessee Football, never figured out how he kept his job, guess people have just learned to overlook him.

Congratulations, John. You get a lot of grief for pointing out that UT is not always the very best at everything but most of your articles are inciteful and thought provoking. Most of the people who gripe on here about your work don't seem to be able to catch onto the thought provoking part.

Vols,

Wonder if he beat out Climer in a close vote.

This is kinda' like voting Musberger as sports caster of the year..........over Vern Lundquist.

Does this mean Adams will return to the sideline as a 'celebrity coach' in the Orange and White game?

a travesty ... and as mountainbrook sez ... "everybody gets a trophy these days" Wish it weren't so. Now it'll be harder than ever to get johnnyboy "relocated" to the obituaries and get a real sportswriter at kns. I'd like the whole kns sports dept. to be fired and replaced, just like they do for college coaches. If you really want change there, do like I did and cancel your home delivery subscription and tell them why. All the adams koolaide drinkers don't know what real sportswriting is, or they'd never ever give him kudos. And no, it's not pollyannaish drivel. But neither should it be dripping sarcasm and ridicule.

FIRE JOHN ADAMS - CAN'T STAND, CAN'T STAND HIS STYLE!!!

Agreed. Well deserved John. Likewise for Biddle whom I enjoyed reading while he was at the Tennessean and Harris whom I remember from the late 50s and 60s. A good group of inductees.

Good post. I love the folks coming on here and saying that they are the ones who can see that Adams is only telling the truth and that EVERYBODY else is wrong for seeing what Adams is really all about - which is far from the truth. It doesn't take a genius to point out the obvious and it doesn't take a lot of hard work to be a rabble rouser pointing out the obvious faults. Adams has always been about creating descent because that's the easiest thing to do - misery loves company is an age old truism.

VolzsFan writes:

How many state Hall of Fames do they have for fish wrapper hacks? Seems like he gets inducted to some state wide Hall of Fame every year. This is not an excellence award but a tenure award. Hang around long enough in this profession making beans and you get to be a Hall of Famer. Adams and the award are a joke.

Agree. The complaint against JA should not be that he "seems" against the Vols. While it would seem self serving if he was, neither is he apparently paid to be "for" the Vols. We should understand the "rabble he raises" as that is what journalism has come to, these days. We could accept that.

The surprise of this great award (sort of like getting a star for being the top of the bottom five in your class) is that John is just not a good writer. Those enjoying him should branch out, read some quality writing and enjoy the difference. JA never offers original thought. He never breaks news. He never does in depth analysis; he just types out the obvious.

Other quality writers offer valid critisms of results...or even efforts, without demeaning or ridiculing the individual. Other writers offer valid options for cosideration. Other writers establish respect and support from sources...and provide timely and previously unknown facts and insight. JA does none of this. He mixes attempts at satire, humor and news leaving one not knowing which he intends. I doubt he does.

We just deserve better.

I think Joe Biddle should have been there years ago just based on his great radio stint pretending to be Johnny Majors. He has a great sense of humor. I am a long time reader of the Nashville press and certainly would have included David Climer over John Adams though. Living in Houston, although, I do respect John's climb up SE TX and down I10 to get to where he is now.

pms151 writes:

One thing about Biddle most folks in East TN do not know. He is close friends with Steve Spurrier.

Good. John Adams is an excellent "columnist," most always interesting and fair. I seem to be the only one curious as to why he is now "a senior columnist" and no longer Sports Editor?

Everyone certainly has a right to their opinion.

I think it is a joke that he is even employed as a writer, let alone getting recognition for it.

No, I don't expect him to write every article with orange ink.

I do expect some articles to NOT be negative, and even on the rare occasions that he tries to write something halfway neutral, he still manages to put a dig in there somewhere.

He consistently wrote negative articles even through our heyday run.

I realize we are going through a bad period, but not EVERYTHING on the hill has to be so gloom and doom.

You haven't heard of them because they are an inbred, self serving, old boys club that doesn't matter in the real world.

I really am shocked by this. I really don't mind what many see as an anti-UT bias by Adams - I just don't think that he is a very good writer. I have never understood how he managed to land and keep the position he has. I have to believe that the top 25% of journalism students at UT could write better than Adams.

Why? Because he tells the truth about how bad UT football has been, and he just gives his opinion? You don't have to agree with it, that's what he gets paid to do.
