Mark Wiedmer: Vols' missing MVP very evident in loss

KNOXVILLE — One game into the Southeastern Conference portion of Tennessee's basketball schedule and the Vols' most valuable player is already crystal clear.

It's Jeronne Maymon, who isn't going to play a minute all winter, his left knee too slow to recover from surgery to give it a try this season.

So even though Maymon didn't score a single point or grab a solitary rebound in Wednesday night's 92-74 loss to Ole Miss, his absence was again sorely felt.

And without him the Vols are increasingly looking like a team incapable of making so much as a deep NIT run, much less capturing an NCAA bid.

There's plenty of talent on this team to beat the teams we're losing to. We have an identity problem and a cohesiveness problem right now because we're searching for who we need to be to win ball games. We should have been figuring that out 10 games ago.

The fans will be missing too. A two game home losing streak and getting blown out both games means no ticket revenue. Did you see how empty the stands were on CBS by 15 minutes left in the 2nd half? Pathetic

As bad as I'd like to see CCM succeed, since I believe him to be a great role model and individual, I really think it's time to begin critically evaluating his coaching style and motivational skills. I know it'll catch a lot of flak on this board, but as my "new handle" will reflect, I certainly hope that 'the powers that be" at the University will begin strong consideration to bring back our "real" coach...Coach Bruce Pearl. Say what you will about him, but he's paid a commensurate penalty for his transgression and I believe he's the key to putting our Men's Basketball program back to where he made us all believe it could go. The "show-cause" was for 3 years...after this season, 2 of those 3 years will have expired, and according to Meatloaf..."2 outta' 3 ain't bad"....so wadda' you say about trying to bring him back next year? Nothing would please me more!

Maymon will be back next season and UT will have a decent season buying Martin more time. After that, we will have a team full of 3 star recruits and will be the South Carolina of the league. Our PG can't stay in games because of his defense and Martin's answer? Armani Moore and next season Travon Landry, a 2 star PG averaging about 3 points per game in high school.

Not ready to cash in on CCM yet. The one area he needs to work on is recruiting and accessing the talent before it comes in. Sometimes we take warm bodies in order to coach up a team. He has to be more selective, but if you don't win the talent pool becomes thin.

I disagree to a point. I like the talent we have. We have the pieces to be a good team, not a great team but a good team. The problems I see are in the way they're being used. McBee's time should be reduced to mop up until he can hit wide open 3's 80% of the time. Stokes is not a polished back-to-the-basket post player, and we need to quit treating him like he is. His role is bang, rebound, face to the basket moves, and draw the double team and dish it out. He's become too big of a black hole and is being told to force it even when he's double and triple teamed.

I don't think you can count on Maymon being back next season. If the knee is not healing properly and within that time frame, he may not be able to come back next season even if he wants to. Great if he does, but they need to prepare to play the season as if he is not coming back.

The last two games our problem was defense and keeping their guards out of the paint. It didn't happen at all. Our shot selection just wouldn't matter as much if we kept the other teams guards out. We're also depending on one man at a time to rebound. I 'd like to see Mak and Stokes ore Mak and Hall together in there. But moving more. Drawing the offense away. Remember the days of crashing the boards instead of letting one man on the other team get the rebound? That seems to happen a lot too.

We can salvage this it's still early and we are still learning to play without Maymon. I hope we get it together for the blue cats! I hates blue cats.

Last year this team started the season playing good offense but no defense, but allowed the offense to erode away till the midpoint of the season when they finally bought into CCM's defense philosophy.
This year they started out playing great defense but no offense, but allowed defense to erode away until the midpoint of the season. Will they buy into CCM's offensive philosphy to turn things around. CCM doesn't have a offense philosophy, so no. Will they rediscover the defense philosophy? Question is why did they lose it. Instead we have Weidmer digging really deep, saying lack of Maymon is the cause. Really? I bet Weid voted JA for the HoF, too.

Memphis and Ole Miss were shooting lights out.If your throwing the ball up from everywhere and its going in,there's not a whole lot you can do.The disparity in fouls in the Ole Miss game was another dagger...they shot 86% from the line.Tennessee's got some limitations but they also have a pretty good pool of talent.Mcbee and Golden are nursing injuries,Kenny Hall is too inconsistent to the point he's almost a liability,Maymon's out,Dwight Miller'out etc.,etc. These aren't excuses, just cold hard facts.Keep the faith. This team needs to come together as a unit and take a little pride in wearing the orange and white. Last night was pathetic except for McRae and maybe Stokes and Richardson. Add to that the fact that the refs forgot where they were and what game they were calling at times and it turned into a complete disaster.

Go Vols! Get it together... QUICK!!!

Theo PLEASE....! Coach Martin's race doesn't play a factor in the least with 99% of the fan base (won't say 100% because there's always "that guy") If anything, most believed that his race would have helped his cause if anything. No, this has to do with "results"...take off the racially tinted glasses you seem to be wearing and admit it....Coach Pearl was and is the better choice between he and Coach Martin.

Here's some FLAK...hey, great catch!

Martin did some good things last year. Finished higher than expected...this was good.
Lost to MTSU...this was bad and disappointing. Communicated the information about injured players in a strange way...this was bad. He has developed the Mobile-One Offense...one player dribbles around and the other four remain as still as possible...IS THIS BAD? He ran out of Defense Pills...Memphis stole them. However, I try to remember that it was not his fault that Coach Pearl had to take a sabbatical.

I like Coach Martin. I would not want him to be mad at me. His stare is like getting hit with a taser. He has everything it takes to be a great coach, except maybe, great players. Stokes was promising, but is showing up lazy. I think it is his haircut. If he were to shave his head and face, he and McBee would bring a YING and a YANG resolution to the court.

Give Martin a chance. If he stinks up the joint this year and next, then let the 4B's start buzzing. You know...Bring Back Bruce to Basketball. Then, as a writer of country songs, how about a line that says:

No matter your game,
round or oval,
come to Knoxville,
the result will be the same.

You gonna get BRUCED, BRUCED BRUCED BRUCED,

A Pair of Bruces beats anybodies FULLHOUSE.

Bring on your tide of Royal Flushes, but remember you can't beat Bruces Wild with passes and rushes.

Yeah, show up mad and leave sad. Show up glad and watch things go bad.

With the Tigers, Chickens, Wildcats and Hogs;
Gators, Commodores, Rebels, Aggies, and Bulldogs.
If we can;t beat ya, we'll just eat y'all.
Helmet, cleats, and even the ball.

Come to Peyton's Place or Ernie and Bernie Land,
Hear the echos of Grace from the Minister of Defense,
Feel the Forces of the Orange lingering from the man called Neyland.
Double Bruces, turn them loose, this is just common SENSE.

We got Fulmerated to a National Champ.
Rated number one in all the polls.
Then we got Hamiltonized...and , WOW,we were supprised.
After being Kiffenazed, down loser's Lane , things are just not the same'
Bring on the Double Bruces and let us sing 'the Orange Thunder Blows.'

We had everybody going up Dooley's 'holler'
and get'n a 'swaller.'
And now he leaves cost'n us plenty a doller.
I say, turn the Double Bruces loose.
We need this to give us a boost.

Things are rocky on Rocky Top.
But craggy mountain tops are smoothed by stormy weather,
Here we go, watch us reach the summit. And maybe even the SUMMITT.
With Double Bruces leading the way, we'll make it working together.
Here we go, we refuse to stop. Let's sing the Orange Storm Blows an Rocky Top.
