New SEC coaches play catch-up in recruiting

The Southeastern Conference football programs with new head coaches have been easy to spot in the league recruiting rankings this winter. They're toward the bottom.

Before Tennessee's Butch Jones, Auburn's Gus Malzahn, Arkansas' Bret Bielema and Kentucky's Mark Stoops can turn around the autumn fortunes at their respective schools, they must assemble their inaugural signing classes. Recent history has shown that coaches do what they can in their first few weeks and then make the most of their second batch of signees.

"I think for Bielema and Butch Jones and Stoops, this class is going to be the hardest," said longtime recruiting analyst Jamie Newberg, who is now with Scout.com. "It's a short recruiting window, and recruiting is about relationships. Let's face it, Stoops has never been a head coach before, and Butch and Bielema have been at Midwestern teams but are now coaching in the SEC.

You don't mean to say? We didn't know that. However, there is one thing for sure.Tennessee won the exact number of trophies this past season as the Gators. ZERO. There is no ranking until all teams have signed their last recruit.

I want to point out a slight difference though. Tennessee ended the season with a win, not an embarrassing loss. The year before was really bad because we ended the season with an embarrassing loss...this year, the Gators were the ones who did that. On prime time TV with millions watching, they were decimated by a Big East team coached by their former DC.

Or should I say DeltaCharlie. LOL

I politely disagree to a point.

Coaching killed Tn last season, not talent.

By coaching, I mean tow things:
-the Defense, obviously, was too much too soon for the players we had
-Dooley never, ever had "the touch" for getting his players to win close games. No, Dooley doesn't suit up...but the thing a winning team has is confidence.

Rationally obtainable wins: UGA, Mizzou, USC, MSu. "Maybe": UF. Win those, they don't lose to Vandy.

So, last season UT could have been rationally at 7 wins (USC, Mizzou), "with grace" at 9 wins (UGA, Miss State), and, god help us, a bit of luck?? 11 wins (VU, UF).

THAT is not a lack of talent.

I think UT has a line on at least two 4* athletes. If they get at least one more 4* and finish with at least 3* talent they will be a top 20 class, and just a week ago were barely in the top 50. Considering UT lost 4 athletes (and why would they de-commit over Dooley is beyond me) they are still in decent shape recruiting wise. I also feel CBJ can elevate talent (much like Walt Harris did at UT) he's done a great job getting 2 & 3* athletes into the NFL, so all is not lost if UT doesn't finish in the top ten..Just a thought.

Its his first year, and many recruits had already decided before he was even hired. I think they can end up in the 20 to 25 range this year, but I think they have a good chance for a top 10 next year.

Uhhh, UT hasn't been in the top five in recruiting in over a decade..Kiffin's class would have been a top 5 class had he not bolted for USC.

There is time. This will be a rebuilding year again with all the players moving on to the NFL. Someone said we lost all the excitement players. That happens to all programs. There are usually excitement players on board or coming in that have not had a chance yet to show what they can do. What CBJ must realize is this is the SEC. Huge linemen on both sides of the ball, good running backs, quick linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties. A quarterback that can run. Not a running quarterback. We have always had good tight ends and receivers. Hope he can continue that trend. But MOST important is a coaching staff that can flat out coach!

Doesn't matter about the talent level necessarily, it depends on how well they are coached. Dooley had a top 10 recruiting class and still couldn't win 8 games. We can easily have a top 20 class and if they are coached up, we can be competitive.

This class could be top 15 depending on the 2 five star recruits being hosted (Green and Lawson) along with North. If we get one of the three, we are looking at top 20 with good coaching staff to develop them.

Florida can take pride in the fact that they have consistently had higher ranked recruiting classes than Louisville. So I can't understand how the Sugar Bowl looked like a college team playing a bad high school team.

You are 100 % correct. Andy Staples of SI tracks the stars of 1st round picks and half of them are 3 stars. It is coaching that wins games and develops players. If CBJ and his staff can coach they will surprise people next year. There is talent coming back and all they need is good coaching

I think Jones is a hard sell.

A lot of half-way good enough to play big time football told him "no," at Cincinnati.

And Cincinnati was in a conference that, under NCAA rules, could admit athletes with the IQ of a mudhole and grades towards the tail-end of the alphabet---and KEEP THEM eligible.

So...what does Hart do, when on that "exhaustive" coaching search---get a guy from a class-b school, whose athletes that were any good had been recruited by the previous head coach---

and bring that guy here, after all the 1st choice coaches had said "No."

Jones may be the Mike Price, but with an ethical twist and a a penchant for trying to do the right thing, in this stumbling parade of head coaches to replace Hall-of-Famer Phillip Fulmer, with a winner.

(Amabama's Crimson Tide had several Coaches parade through Tuscaloosa, following Gene Stallings. I would have used the name Mike Shula, but Shula was a Bama player, and Jones certainly did not play SEC ball.)

JMO...and I wish I thought higher of the hire, of of his staff. But clearly I think they are patchwork choices, after Hart screwed up finding Top-Level coaches.

GO Vols!

I thought that real fans were suppose to "back" whoever the coach is. Sadly there are too many on here that like to call true VOL FANS names and berate those fans any way possible. It gets really old quickly. No I was not in love with Dolley but I did support him because he was the Head Coach of the TENNESSEE VOLS!!! It's a roll of the dice no matter who was hired. Saban was hired by Miami because he did a great job at LSU and look how that turned out for Miami. So please given the new coach a chance. Seems some folks on here would fire a new employee on their second day just because another employee did not like the new employee. Guess some of these people that say "I told you so" are just better than the rest of us and have never made a mistake in their lives. Support UT or GET OUT!!!! GO VOLS!!!

According to information on ESPNU there is still an opportunity for Coach Jones to sign up a top 20 recruiting class or even better. However, several actions by the UT Administration have made it difficult for Butch Jones.

Dave Hart probably should have "pulled the trigger" and fired Coach Dooley (Derek not Vince) immediately after Derek Dooley decided to kick a 4th quarter field goal against Alabama. A coaching change at that time might have enabled UT under Coach Chaney's guidance to win enough games to qualify for a bowl appearance which would have given potential recruits a brighter picture of UT's future.

With the departure of the big three, Butch Jones will feel the full brunt of the generally mediocre recruiting done by Derek Dooley these past three years. We definitely know how good a coach Butch Jones is after this season. With no SEC type running back, cornerbacks, proven SEC receivers, and defensive lineman, he will be lucky if he can finish 6-6. This will not be totally his fault, but even if he is allowed to finish his contract (and I believe he should be allowed to do so) he will still be behind the recruiting eight ball due to Coach Dooley (Derek not Vince). Incidentally, I believe Coach Jones did already defeat James Franklin in the Liberty Bowl (Cincinnati vs. Vanderbilt).

As a New Year’s Resolution, the UT Administration should resolve in the future not to fire a winning coach after a couple of losing season without letting him have a clear time frame in which to show a return to progress. Not to place someone in the position of athletic director because he is a good fund raiser. If a Head Coach suddenly leaves during a critical period look at filling the vacancy with one of the assistant coaches rather than making a panic hire. Never hire someone from a rival SEC school to be president at the university. I am sure we would all feel better if those in charge of UT would make that pledge.

We have a real turd program at UT right now and UGA has a real top 10 program and you have the nerve to talk trash about them...you have got to be kidding.
