Tennessee will spend $7.51 million on salaries for coaches, support staff and administrators for the football team, according to new salary figures released to the News Sentinel on Monday.

The News Sentinel made an open records request Friday for the salaries.

The football staff — determined by individuals listed on UT’s website — totals 31.

The overall cost of UT’s 21-person support team is $1.425 million. Of that group, 11 staff members were retained from Derek Dooley’s staff. The support staff supplements Jones’ nine on-field assistant coaches, who will make a combined $3.085 million. Jones agreed to the outline of a deal last month that is worth $3 million annually over six years.

The salaries for coaches, support staff, administrators and Dooley, who earned $2 million, was $5.96 million for 23 people in 2012, based on individuals listed on UT’s website and according to data released by UT through an open records request. Dooley’s nine on-field staff members were due to make $2.925 million had they been retained in 2013.

NCAA rules limit teams to nine “on-field” assistants, but major college programs almost always hire additional administrative staff and “quality control” assistants who do video work and scouting. Tennessee also will have three graduate assistants, who take graduate-level classes toward a Master’s degree and earn a small stipend.

J.R. Sandlin, who was hired from Alabama to be the director of recruiting, will make $55,000. Recruiting assistant Keith Pantling, who accompanied Jones from Cincinnati, will make $50,000. Chris Spognardi, who was Jones’ chief of staff at Cincinnati and will have a similar role at UT, will make $60,000.

On the strength staff, head strength coach Dave Lawson ($175,000) will supervise associate coach Mike Szerszen ($60,000) and assistants Greg Adamson ($46,000) and Brandon Myles ($37,000).

The quality control assistants, who are often young or inexperienced coaches trying to get a foothold in the business, all make under $30,000.

Larry Knight and Chase Gibson will be defensive graduate assistants. Former Oregon and Montana State quarterback Cody Kempt will be offensive graduate assistant.

The highest-paid on-field assistants are offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian and defensive coordinator John Jancek, who each make $475,000 annually.

It's Big Time Collegiate football for crying out loud. They have to live big. That's why so many can be so negative when they do not win every game. I agree though NO ONE on any level is worth all the money thrown at them. But as long as there are people with the dough to throw, there will be people demanding the big bucks. It is what it is. I for one am hoping every member of this staff earns their keep beginning with Coach Jones.

Have you ever heard so many doctors complaining about all the years they wasted in medical school when they could have been coaches and gotten rich? Incredible. Even the plumbers are beginning to complain. Someone overheard Hart say he'd like to get into coaching to make some real money but then said after a moments contemplation, what the heck, I get $750,000 a year for not working...can't be that with a stick.

Oh, yeah...you missed all the other items there, you probably could not see them for the mammoth bamboo plants that had grown so tall and green! ;~)

I think you are going to be surprised by the Vols record this year. I feel like we have a great group of coaches, just give them the chance to prove it. As far as Deek Dooley, he is gone now so you need to forget about him and let the man get on with his life and you get on with yours. GBO

These guys just got a commit from a two star JUCO volleyball playing tight end with a total record of 1 touchdown.

With recruiting like this we'll be right back up there in the mix for an SEC championship!

There is nobody who turns down money. A person is worth exactly what they can get paid, not a penny more or less. I would like to see more incentive based pay structure, but the current market is driving coaching salaries, so there it is.

Nobody at Alabama is complaining about Saban's salary. Hope Butch has the same success.

Just a queastion if anyone knows. Is a quality control position something a person can work another job as well? The Terry Fair hire which most of were excited about shows he is only making 20k. Are they allowed to have supplemental jobs? Now a days its hard to live off 20k

Yep, guess the new guys better be good at coaching because according to Rivals the "quality points" keep dropping. Of course, it's also going to be interesting to see how A&M can sign all 34 of their commits - and GA their 29. Apparently recruiting rules are just more like guidelines.

You got a bargain on the dog, you dont even have to feed or water it. I bet you could cut the legs off those pants and have some sporty shorts for the summer.

The only suprise would be a 6-6 season. 5-7 at best! Now, get on with your life after reading this.

Coach Saban received 525K in bonus for winning the SECCG and BCSCG. All of the money was donated to Nicks Kids. The foundation he and his wife have for under privileged kids. Guess CNS is all about the money lol...... Roll Tide

Witch Doctor adopt a wait and see also. Witch Doctor say this hire is either going to make Hart or be a catalyst to clean house of EVERYONE. Witch Doctor say the thought EVERYBODY in the US is lining up to coach here has been disproved over and over. Witch Doctor say next Hart needs to clean up the AD and do what he was hired to do.
Witch Doctor say we if we are at 3-3 or 2-4 get ready for "Neyland Towers Condos" to be built on second level...CHEAP.

Agree! I think this is the last chance for romance and then as you say let the house cleaning begin. No one had their hand in the air saying pick me for the last two hires.
But I dont think we are at the, stumble into a blind luck great hire, like the guys on west end.

You are incorrect on almost every one of those schools you mentioned. Saban and Miles are making more, of course they have national titles to their credit.

Jones is starting off at a higher salary than Richt, Muschamp, Freeze, and Mullen to name a few. He is within 100 grand of Bielema.

He is the 13nth highest paid coach in the country and 5th highest in the SEC per coacheshotseat.com and USA Today.

We are paying this staff like one of the best in the country. it remains to be seen if they can actually recruit and coach like it.
