Tennessee will spend $7.51 million on salaries for coaches, support staff and administrators for the football team, according to new salary figures released to the News Sentinel on Monday.
The News Sentinel made an open records request Friday for the salaries.
The football staff — determined by individuals listed on UT’s website — totals 31.
The overall cost of UT’s 21-person support team is $1.425 million. Of that group, 11 staff members were retained from Derek Dooley’s staff. The support staff supplements Jones’ nine on-field assistant coaches, who will make a combined $3.085 million. Jones agreed to the outline of a deal last month that is worth $3 million annually over six years.
The salaries for coaches, support staff, administrators and Dooley, who earned $2 million, was $5.96 million for 23 people in 2012, based on individuals listed on UT’s website and according to data released by UT through an open records request. Dooley’s nine on-field staff members were due to make $2.925 million had they been retained in 2013.
NCAA rules limit teams to nine “on-field” assistants, but major college programs almost always hire additional administrative staff and “quality control” assistants who do video work and scouting. Tennessee also will have three graduate assistants, who take graduate-level classes toward a Master’s degree and earn a small stipend.
J.R. Sandlin, who was hired from Alabama to be the director of recruiting, will make $55,000. Recruiting assistant Keith Pantling, who accompanied Jones from Cincinnati, will make $50,000. Chris Spognardi, who was Jones’ chief of staff at Cincinnati and will have a similar role at UT, will make $60,000.
On the strength staff, head strength coach Dave Lawson ($175,000) will supervise associate coach Mike Szerszen ($60,000) and assistants Greg Adamson ($46,000) and Brandon Myles ($37,000).
The quality control assistants, who are often young or inexperienced coaches trying to get a foothold in the business, all make under $30,000.
Larry Knight and Chase Gibson will be defensive graduate assistants. Former Oregon and Montana State quarterback Cody Kempt will be offensive graduate assistant.
The highest-paid on-field assistants are offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian and defensive coordinator John Jancek, who each make $475,000 annually.
