GoVols247: Legacy pick: Dillon Bates to play for Vols

Dillon Bates always has wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, former Tennessee standout and Dallas Cowboys safety Bill Bates, and he appears to be well on his way to fulfilling that dream.

He decided to start by playing at his father’s alma mater.

The younger Bates, a Top247 rising senior linebacker from Ponte Vedra (Fla.) High School, announced Wednesday that he has committed to Tennessee, choosing the Vols over Florida and Alabama before a national TV audience during Nike’s The Opening in Beaverton, Ore.

Vols,

This is great news. When we think of Bill, it's hard to forget that 1980 game with UGA and some freshman for the Dawgs named Herschel. Leading 15-2 in the opening game, Vols went on to lose 16-15 and Georgia won the N C.

Now, Dillon will come to the Vols and help build the program we look forward to seeing. Coach B J is on a roll with his recruiting efforts.

Great work, and..............Go Vols !

Dore
I suggest you worry more about the 4 thugs that just got dumped by the school while Franklin was on vacation.

VolunteerTitan writes:

Guys. We have found a coach that understands what it takes...period. This recruiting class sees the light. Lets give him the time to turn the ship around for 3 years before anyone says anything negative! We will have the best young team like Alabama did under Saban a few years ago ( they went 6-6 and lost to one of those directional Louisiana teams that year). I truly believe we have the guy that can be the thorn in Sabans side. Dont judge Butch on the record of this season(since we will have the toughest schedule in the NCAA once again). Mark my words. This recruiting class is the beginning for another championship, just like 95, 96, and 97 recruiting classes were to take an unheard of group of guys that just lost Peyton Manning and Leonard Little (not taking ANYTHING away from what they did) and went up to Syracuse to take down Donavan McNabb, and then went game from game to create history.

MetroplexMojo writes:

#1 class in the nation as of right now. I got a Berry good feeling about this class.

oldster writes:

Hopefully, Dillon's career will be at least as good as his dad's was here at UT, but equally as hopefully, the moment from his career that will be most remembered will be somewhat better than that most of us recall from his Dad's - getting posterized by probably the greatest football player ever.

Stepchild_nFL writes:

I was at that GA game. Bates gave him a hit but Hershal was an amazing surprise for the nation. Bill was awesome as a walk-on and is a legacy at Dallas. If you are a Dallas fan you are a Bates fan. Hit of the week. Bill had class and his son has more. He truly knows he wants to be a Vol. Just like the rat pack. These dudes, This squad wants to bring the NC to Neyland. The real Sugar Bowl.

You Tube is a great tool for those sad sacks whose school has no tradition and few highlights to enjoy. You can always find some from the big boys to watch.

Anyway, the score that matters is 6 to 0. Have you guys even heard of national titles?

I have always marveled at the source for the utter contempt Coach Cafego had for the 'Dores. I now understand. Besides the fact they display a totally hypocritical attitude of holier than thou (their players are all saints and scholars), their fans apparently think winning a single game every generation compels respect for their program. They have been and will continue their storied history Anchored Down as SEC Doormats.

Every time I read a comment on here like this, it reminds me of just why Joe Thompson hates that school as much as he does!

When the announcer asked him how hard of a decision it was to not stay close to home and choose to go to FL instead, he said he had a lot of family and friends in Knoxville, too.

Well, Dillon, you just made a whole bunch of new friends in the family called the VOL Nation!!

Shake_Bake writes:

This is a great addition for CBJ and his staff! They have demostrated a great work ethic so far and everyone needs to recognize that. I think this kid has All SEC written all over him and maybe even All American. Welcome to Knoxville young man, you will look good in that orange and white uniform!

Vols,

Especially Collier, Banker Vol, Vol56, Vols4ever,

you guys nailed it. With news like this, idiots like the 'Crafty commode' are simply doing a slow burn. It irritates him/them to learn of any good thing happening to the Vols. It's very entertaining in a way, to see the response from trolls like this who are demoralized whenever they hear such news.

Oh and by the way, the call by the red neck announcer Munson, for UGA, the night Walker did his thing against Bill Bates, was a clear example of the difference in him and John Ward.

Vol friends, the roster is being filled, so we need to be patient for a year or so......in the meantime, we can expect idiots such as 'Crafty commode' to continue to reveal his true self.

Thanks so much for posting the score from last year's UT - Vandy game. How about we post the scores from that game over, say the past 100 years? And now that you think you can hang with all the SEC big boys, how's that "sex crime" thing going?

This is certainly great news. From what I have seen so far I think Butch Jones and his staff are doing a great job. I am very impressed how the coaching staff work so well together. I don't expect a lot in their first year but let's just say I am really looking forward to watching them play next year. I am also really looking forward to Vanderbilt coming in here next year. Go Vol's.

chattabluetick writes:

Like the comma-duds even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and again. They need not think they will ever reel off 24 in a row against the Vols, so go ahead and put that thought out of your mind 4118. Not a chance in 3 of your lifetimes. Vandy will fall right back where they belong, the cellar. Now how bout that Coach Butch Jones and this recruiting class he and his staff are rounding up, the recipe for better days ahead for the football program. Welcome aboard Dillon.

PHAT_VOL writes:

Welcome Mr. Bates. I don't know what coach Jones is telling'um but what ever it is I hope he continues to do the Great Job he has done thus far. Now go after the twins.

Welcome home young Mr. Bates! The Volunteer Family is so proud of your father and can never forget the many times he electrified Neyland Stadium. Smokey Rules! Go Bates! Go You Volunteers!

The comments by Bill may be one of the the strongest endorsements for Jones since coming to UT..it sounds like he is saying Dillon would not have come to UT if Jones had not convinced him to do so..this has to impress other possible recruits..

I think you mean fan. I don't know that they have more than one.

Welcome Dillon Bates. Looking forward to seeing you in Orange. Loved your dad in a Vol uniform as he always came to the ball carrier with a bad attitude and had your grandmother as a substitute teacher a number of times. She was great.

The suspense was a killer last night on ESPNU, but well worth the wait to see the young man put that beautiful Tennessee orange hat on. If he is anything like his dad, we have great things to look forward to. I attended UT when his dad played, and yes, he did get run over by Walker, but Bill was far from the last. Sad that many remember Bill by that one hit. Bill Bates was one of the most energetic players that ever graced the field. Isn't it funny how a fan from Vandy can't show any footage with someone from his team running over Bill. The "commode door" fan on here needs to watch the following, which he won't, showing even Herschel himself praising the man.

Anyway, nice to get to welcome a member of the Bates family back to Knoxville. IT IS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL. GO BIG ORANGE. Class of 83

That was a great video. I really enjoyed watching it. Thanks for letting us all see it. You know it's been said that a man's quality of life is in direct porportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor. I agree with that 100% and I think the Bates family exemplifies that. You don't get to play in the NFL for as many year's as Bill did, and you don't get to be a four star coming out of high school (Dillon) without being committed.

Vols4life77 writes:

With this commitment it brings UT back up to #1 in rivals. I was watching very nervously as he chose the VOLS.. I must say orange looks just as good on you as your Dad. Welcome aboard Dillon, glad to have you!!
It must suck to be a Vandy fan, you beat tenn pretty good with the worst coach in tenn history and you think you own the state.
Hahahahahahahaha.... WRONG... Then a first year coach comes in and 'OL smart mouth Franklin can't even get the in- state recruits. Congrats on your monumental year last year and I hoped you taped the games because it's back to the cellar where you idiot " Anchor Down" fans belong...
