Tennessee continues recruiting surge with addition of Gaulden

Tennessee continued its recent string of commitments Saturday by adding another of the state’s top prospects in the 2014 class.

Three-star rising senior defensive back RaShaan Gaulden of Independence High School in Thompson’s Station, Tenn., announced Saturday afternoon that he has committed to the Vols, giving first-year coach Butch Jones and his staff their fifth pledge in the past week.

Dooley wasn't a coach willing to "live the lifestyle" or put forth the effort. He had a last name, lots of hair, made "funny" remarks and that was it. Probably took lots of vacations and mowed his own grass. Game day coaching? Well...

You answered your own question. Dooley could not recruit because kids did not want to play for a loser. You combine that with the fact that Dooley was not interested in recruiting players and that is why Dooley couldn't recruit at TN.

Had UK treated Paul "Bear" Bryant better he might have done all his winning there instead of Alabama. The Big Blue might have been known more for football than basketball tradition. Then Alabama would only be claiming 35 Nat'l Championships instead of the 50 they think they own.

Thanks for the reminder why I think you suck. If by UT getting "back" you mean a winning record and a bowl game, good luck. In the past 6 years guess who has been to more bowl games and beat more ranked teams, UK or UT? Our new coach while proven, as is yours, to recruit well- has actually done something at a high level. Florida State or Cincinnati? Hmmm. I think Butch deserve a raise already. He has done more than Martin. What a joke?

You are the joke. In what dream world does it make any sense at all to say somebody who hasn't ever been a head coach is "proven" in any way that equals one who's been a head coach at two FBS programs, one a BCS school, and who has three conference championships in six years as a head coach? So what if Stoopy was a good coordinator? That in no way assures anybody that he will be a good head coach, nor does anything his brothers have done. It's a pretty safe bet that his stint at UK will not result in a winning record on his resume for his next job. However, if he can get the mildcats to a bowl once or twice, he may be able to get a job at a football school. I heard he accepted the job at UK so he could get good seats for basketball games.

Nobody said anything about his brothers. And we have had a run of bowl games in the past 7 years that UT can't match without Top 25 recruiting classes. Now we have a coach that has coached top defenses and an offensive coordinator who has coached top offenses in the past 5 years. Not to mention he can recruit the heck out of Ohio. And I did start my rant here today congratulating you on your recruiting success. My point was that UT and UK have a bright future due to the coaches recruiting efforts. But the raise for Martin, a joke. A raise is for going above and beyond on the job or to reward job performance. What exactly were you paying him his initial salary for? Reward mediocrity.

More than prove it to the skeptics, UT needs wins this season to prove to its commitments that UT is worth signing on the dotted line for. It would be a shame to start losing some of the top verbals in this class because of another losing season.

Jones is proving he can recruit. Now, he has to start proving he can coach. And, unlike Dooley, he has a track record of winning, a stable, experienced staff, and some top-notch SEC talent to work with.

Being a UC grad but long-time UT fan by birth, I'm reminded of a quote by Butch Jones' senior QB, Zach Collaros, who said when asked about Jones, "He's a leader of men." IMHO, that's about as good as it gets in the game of coaching.

I'd say that thirty point win over the Kats earned Cuonzo much of that raise. I understand that last year was a "down year" to Ky fans, and I don't expect many thirty point basketball W's vs. Ky. Kinda like that 30 point win was the beginning of a tradition for you of some kind. At least we didn't give Joker a raise for that 10-7 win. Although it should have got your coach fired losing to a losing team with no QB with a bowl game on the line. And that 30 point loss in basketball followed a National Championship with the expectation of another this year. Who was the joke on?

Speaking of jokes, here we go: You are still paying 2 of your last 3 football coaches that you fired. One was wise enough to quit in the middle of the night. You gave a raise to a bball coach that was mediocre at best. No wonder your athletic department is broke and borrowing from the school. Your baseball team is nonexistent. You have had NCAA violations in your top 3 sports, even a disgraced swimming program. The only bright spot in 10 years has been a proven, admitted cheater that is banned from coaching and you want him back once the ban is lifted. Shew

That was my point. Don't like to get ugly on here. But that Bi polar and lemme ax guy have bad attitudes. UK and UT is to me the best rivalry around. I would love for our two programs to be top dogs every year fighting it out.

Well at least you aint that Vanderbilt fan who's only argument is the score from 1 of 2 victories against UT in 30 years. You had to know it'd be hostile coming in here even if you came in peace. If we go out there this year and look like bumbling fools these verbal commits will seek greener pastures. We need a good showing against good teams like Oregon and Alabama, not a 35 point loss. From what I hear our guys are getting that mental toughness conditioning they need.

The future does look good on paper. It will be the winning that counts, and the continuation of great recruiting. We'll see.

Volunteers vs Wildcats: one of the oldest rivalries in collegiate athletics, going back to 1893, so this will be our 120th anniversary of this football game! I just wish we could roll out the old 'Ice Water' Beer Barrel.

The tradition was cancelled by Ky AD C.M. Newton in 1998. A week before the VOLS game, after beatin' Vandy; two KY players and a friend went hunting. The driver-a KY player- wrecked and killed his two friends. The VOLS have had the Barrel since.

http://enquirer.com/editions/1999/04/...

Whatever folks may think, cancelling the 'Beer Barrel' seven days after such a tragic loss of life was the right thing at the time. But now, we could bring it back. Just call it 'The Barrel'. But as so many ask, "What do you think they got in that Little Brown Jug?"

----------------
The Beer Barrel was started by KY fans in 1925 (Wildcats won 23-20) during Prohibition (wherefore art the 'Ice Water') which brought KY within one game of the VOLS 11W-10L-3T lead in the rivalry. Bob Neyland took over in 1926 and he never lost to KY, beating them 21-0-5. The 1935 Ky win was when he was serving in the war. They tied him four times.

For the 73 years of The Beer Barrel the tally was:
..TN...KY...Ties
..53...14....6
The VOLS were ranked in 34 of those games, the Wildcats in 6.
Scores were stenciled on the barrel and the winner took it home for the year.
VOLS lead all time 75-24-9.

VOL fans 'keg-napped' it one year, then Kentucky 'dog-napped' Smokey. Vandy even stole it in 1960 when Bowden Wyatt was the VOLS HC.

Well, there's a difference that will very likely show clearly by the time signatures are on the dotted line. Recruits know that within the four or five years they will play for the Vols, they have a reasonably good chance to play in Atlanta or in the new BCS playoffs. The Vols have been there, done that. Any recruits thinking they have a chance to do that at UK are high on something. No offense, but that's just reality.

Stoops will really have accomplished something impressive if his 2014 class is still in the top-25 come February.

I guess there's always room for hope, though. South Carolina made it to Atlanta once. They are the only team to do that with 3 conference losses, but still.....Maybe a time will come when everybody else in the East has a crappy season at the same time?

This is difficult to admit but for the past 5-10 seasons Kentucky should have beaten Tennessee more than just 1 time. Kentucky had completely choked in numerous games and I can't get it out of my mind.

Tennessee is like a venerial disease (with no cure) that shows symptoms once a year.

Pondering the schedule, it looks like the 10-05 UGA game could, COULD, be a breakthrough game for the Vols. UT will have played S.Ala the previous week and have an open date after the UGA game. On the other hand, UGA will have just come off a tough part of their schedule with LSU the previous week. Ahead, they face UT, UM, then Vandy so to them it may feel like they can relax for a for a few weeks. Plus the game is in Knoxville. IF UGA happens to be 5-0 on Oct-10, and beginning to believe in their own hype, they could be running into an ambush at Neyland. An ambush opportunity for the Vols and a chance for CBJ to show what he's got. Very interesting.
