Australia eliminates Gibson, Chavanne and Team USA softball

In a game to determine a spot in the finals alongside Japan of the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, Team USA fell to Australia 2-1 in a game that needed extra innings to determine a victor.

Former Tennessee player Raven Chavanne was 1-for-5 and had a chance for a walk-off hit with two outs in the bottom of the 8th and runners on second and third.

But Chavanne popped out to shortstop, and team USA missed a shot at a rematch with Japan for the title.

Australia had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning.

Former Tennessee player Lauren Gibson had two hits in a game where the U. S. was able to get plenty of hits, but had a hard time scoring runs. Team USA managed 11 hits but stranded 14 baserunners.

Team USA was held scoreless for six innnings before scoring their only run in the bottom of the seventh to force extras.

Australia and Japan played late Monday to determine the tournament champion.

On Sunday night, Japan ace Yukiki Ueno shut down Gibson, Chavanne and the rest of Team USA in a 5-0 shutout that ended a six-game American winning streak and gave Japan a spot in the championship game.

Ueno allowed only two hits.

Tough loss, but still very proud of the Lady Vols!

It's tough to put together a group of players who just finished their seasons and go against the world's best teams who have played together for several years. Also, when your best player (Kelani Richets) isn't allowed to be on the team because the US federation decided they couldn't wait a couple of days for her response it hurts the team too.

Boy am I glad I don't live or work with you!
Choke? As usual? Ridiculous!

Summitts Court is right. The USA people really blew it with how they handled Rickitts. This team has no pitching. You can't blame Ellen Renfroe and other returning college players for wanting a summer off. And you can't blame pros like Monica Abbott for playing for their pro teams where they make a living. So our best options are recent grads before they go pro or go on with graduate school or their career. It will be hard to compete against teams filled with pros from other countries unless something changes in the way USA selects a team.
