Fifth-year defensive back Eric Gordon remains a part of Tennessee’s “program” as he works toward finishing his degree, but he is not a part of the team and won’t play in 2013, coach Butch Jones said on Wednesday.

Gordon, a Nashville native who had played nickelback in the Vols’ defense, missed most of spring due to personal issues.

Jones said this summer that coaches were “supportive” of Gordon and wanted him to get his life back in order.

Gordon played in 33 games during his UT career, registering 104 tackles.

Hate that he's not part of the team this year. Not sure what the issues were but it sounds like he was given plenty of time and support but things just didn't get better. At least he still gets to work towards getting his degree. Wish you the best of luck

I will never forget his pick-six in the overtime win over Vanderbilt. That is the only time I ever saw a team win a game in overtime without their offense ever taking the field.

Sad but not unexpected. Now to sweat out the announcement on Marlin Lane.

And the whole stadium went crazy the entire 90 yards...and then got to celebrate again after the touchdown was confirmed by replay. One of the most exciting moments of the last several seasons. One more month til kickoff...Go Big Orange.

Sorry, but I won't miss him on the field...any time the opposing team needed critical yards, they went to his side.... don't believe it?? go back and watch some critical 3rd down plays from big games...I have!!

BTW... that Candy intercept was one of the very few he made in his career.....

lahvolman2 writes:

Also, in 33 games they only mention 104 tackles and not a word about interceptions except for that game!!!

Dude,
Did Eric Gordon impregnate your sister or something?.... chill

Though not the most skilled defensive player Tennessee ever had, he did play with emotion and when he made a hit, it was usually big! Sorry about your athletic career but if you are smart, you'll finish and cherish that degree for the rest of your life. VFL.

Everyone gets a "do over" with the new coaching staff. Whatever a player did or did not do, before, we should forget and allow them to improve and grow.

If Gordon doesn't play in his 5th year, will he have a year left to play?

you'll be missed. but, hopefully not too much. ;)

good luck to you in life! and thank you for choosing our vols to play your college ball at.

Lane's already back on the team. Not sure what you mean by this. He's not slotted as one of the first two at the RB position, but he's on the team.

interesting!

coach jones said that he's not a part of the team, but he's a part of the program. this COULD mean that he could come back NEXT year?? for the 2014 season. he technically has 1 year of eligibility left, so, i'm assuming that he could come back...

go vols!

They converted on 3rd down plays on whoever we had out there.

I want to say barring any NCAA waivers, he has 5 years to play 4 on the field so his career is over at UT. Reading between the lines, Coach Jones wants him as part of the program for APR purposes.

A player has 5 years to play 4.The only way he could play next season is to be granted a hardship by the NCAA.Don't count on that.It seldom happens. He is most likely history.

It should not have counted. The referees blew it. The whistle blew the play dead.

Whiners always whine about the past. This troll is one of the biggest whiners..........remember that.
What a joke, to use a screen name suggesting he may in some way be a Tennessee fan.

Again, a whiny loser.

Good or bad, Gordon was one of the few DBs with real game experience. It doesn't stand to reason that ALL the players were so bad that they can't become serviceable players with experience and better coaching. After all, they were mostly highly recruited in HS; they couldn't ALL be irredeemable chumps. We may never know Gordon's full story, but it says something good about Jones, IMHO, 1) that it must have been something serious or Gordon wouldn't be suspended for the season before the season even starts, even though DB is a group that needs to be shored up; 2) that despite the need for a good player in that position, he was willing to sit Gordon; and 3) that Jones cares enough about Gordon as an individual to allow him to stay in school and, I guess, even stay on scholarship, even while knowing that he would get no further use out of Gordon.

“Marlin will be back and he has done everything to warrant reinstatement to this football team,” Jones said, later adding, “He understands that and he has to start rebuilding that trust with the coaching staff, his teammates, and that started this summer.”

That is a recent quote, although it is positive that he will be back, doesn't say that he is back. If there was an article that said he was reinstated, I must have missed it.

That was a quote from yesterday's press conference. He is back practicing with the team and will have to work his way back up the roster. Long as he doesn't screw up he's good to go.
