Survey: Help improve the News Sentinel's digital content

Take our online survey.

Take our online survey.

The News Sentinel is launching a review of three specific content areas to expand what we offer for online, the tablet and smartphone users. We’re focusing this summer on education, local and state government and University of Tennessee sports.

What more would you like to see on your smartphone regarding one or more of these subjects? How about your tablet? What should we add to make your experience better?

We invite you to take an online survey, the results of which will be closely poked, prodded and pondered this summer by several newsroom groups. Your feedback will go a long way to helping us design content delivery. How should we improve what we offer you? What do you want to see online from the News Sentinel or on your smartphone or tablet? What do you want to see more of? Less of?

You can access the survey through this link: http://www.knoxnews.com/survey/.

We appreciate your participation. We assure you every survey will be thoughtfully considered as we prepare to enhance how we bring you the latest and most interesting news about UT sports, education and local and state government.

One way to help KNS is to get rid of John Adams! Just saying!

100% correct - VP. It's simple really. There are some good sites to use as a benchmark. Nebraska is one. Ohio State is another. Neither of those two sites would ever allow Adams to spew his venom under their brand.

Vols,

I pretty much go along with the first two posting re this 'poll.'

The KNS may not like my reply but in essence, said the writers need to remember the basis for their getting a pay check, and one in particular needs to clean up the negativity.

Stop whoever titles the articles from using "shock titles" when it barely meets the body of the story. Also make posters give more info on themselves, it might stop the trolls. I know it has worked with other outlets and stopped much of the flaming.

Nothing wrong with John Adams. He just says things that some of the folks on hear do not want to hear.

The KNS reporters don't have to be UT homers, but some seem to be anxious to "report the dirt" about UT.

Wes Rucker? May be a good writer (He says he is!), but his attitude needs to improve.

Those employed in the business work for Chattanooga Times Free Press. Those that treat this as a hobby while collecting a paycheck work at Knox news.

OBTW--to help make the content better stop treating Vols news like a hobby.

The very best thing KNS could do to add readership would to be move the mean spirited John Adams out of Sports, or at the very least, away from reporting or editorializing on anything having to do with the Volunteers.

There are myriads of examples I could provide, but his recent 'fluff' piece on 'How the Vols Could Rise to the Top in the SEC East' is a prime example. For John Adams to insinuate the only way is for all the other teams to somehow loose their coach or otherwise fail for UT to rise is, as I and many others who commented on that article feel, mean spirited, and not what we want to see in our hometown newspaper sports articles. Some say Adams is 'telling like it is'. That article truly was not. It was solely intended, in a mean spirited way, to punch readers buttons and generate a comment string. That article had no worthwhile information or editorial position. That is typical of the fare John Adams provides.

John Adams alone is why, decades ago, I cancelled daily home delivery, and then even Sunday delivery. I can't stand that even one cent of my subscription price be paid as his salary. He's an editorial jerk, a poor excuse for a sports writer. Get rid of him.

It's not that we don't want to hear truth, as in coaching changes, etc. of course we do. That's what keeping up with your team is about isn't it? No, Volunteer sports does not and should not be reported or editorialized through 'orange colored glasses' as those of us against Adams are accused. What we hate is the smarmy way he does it. The 'Others Must Fail for UT to Rise' word vomit proves it, he's a jerk.

Amen to that. A writer can tell the truth without poking sarcasm at the program. Tells me they aren't a true Vol fan. The other writers do a decent job but saying that "Butch Jones is headed down I40 to Cleveland" is a pitiful example of treating your job as a hobby. The writer most definitely isn't from TN or doesn't get out much. Additionally, posting insane titles for articles to create sensationalism is a rookie move at it's best. Knoxville needs a good editor who is from the Knoxville area and understands the history of Vols sports. This would eliminate many of the silly factual errors we have to endure each week.

Sorry Toddy.

Bad day with the black and whites? Everyone knows your claim to fame is the guiness book of records with regard to being banned and scrambling around for new screen names.

Now that you've run out of the anti "slap hitting" season, what childish messages do we see forthcoming????????

Yes indeed, both I plus many other Vol fans have you pegged, and we're "right" about that...kid.

As far as KNS's online experience for users of touch format devices, I think optimizing the website design for ease of access and advaced features would be great... However...

... I sincerely hope the KNS's site designers and administrators do not make the mistake that others before them have made...

As they strive to create a more appealing experience for mobile, touch-based device users, they often create an end product that alienates desk-top and lap-top users. 'Robbing Peter to Pay Paul', if-you-will.

Hopefully they can create a balance that allows mobile device, desk-top, and lap-top users alike to have a great online experience.

Too many sites have made this erorr (hehe) and have reduced the overall quality of their customer's online experience. Maybe KNS will earn from other's past mistakes...

Keep everything rah-rah and don’t point out challenges, problems, or failures. Narrow the view, and keep it all positive. Ignore all other teams in the SEC. Don’t dredge up any history unless it is favorable to UT. Don’t bother with emerging trends in college football unless it potentially favors UT. Don't entertain hypotheticals. Don’t invoke wit, humor, or tongue in cheek…too easily interpreted. Don’t be critical of the program because 450 ball (fb) is just fine.

But seriously…when there is recruiting news please identify the sport in the headline, and as has been mentioned, don’t hype the headlines. Also include pictures of all athletes who merit an article about them.

The quality of the online "experience" has been going downhill on this site for several years. Mostly from the lack of policing the posters and allowing offenders to come back 20 times under new names. It was much better as a pay site. That kept the riff raff down. How sad is it when a paper has to poll its customers to find out what to do? Sort of like a warden asking the inmates how to make them more comfortable.

Apologies for the length.

The main thing KNS must do is choose a direction and get consistent. There's really only one question:

Is KNS going to be an objective journalistic enterprise-Yes or no?

If yes, then removal of the Big Orange colors, checkerboard motif, and forfeiting the "govols" domain name would go a long way to demonstrate a commitment in this area. So would firing John Adams who has lost significant respect, credibility, and connections at UT as well as damaging access for KNS to obtain the kind of inside information that a hometown newspaper should be able to print first. Y'all know this is true, so don't try to weasel here.

If no, then most would assume that a website "bathed in Big Orange", with the checkerboard motif, and "govols" as the domain name is a hometown newspaper that supports UT sports, will provide factual information that UT fans are seeking about their team. They would reasonably expect an end to reruns of stories about Majors being bitter, or the latest happenings with people such as Buzz Petersen, Lane Kiffin, Kevin O’Neill, Jerry Green, Dave Clawson, Trooper Taylor, Kelly Washington, Rick Clausen, Tyler Bray, Sal Sunseri, Da’Rick Rogers, Debbie Jennings, or Derek Dooley. They will reasonably expect such an enterprise to provide no refuge for trollz who live only anonymously run UT down. They would further be reasonable to expect that such an enterprise would not employ a trollfeeder like John Adamz. They might also expect to see this enterprise move from the 1990s into the present day where comments are concerned. Many sites today can rank both comments and commenters, and allow the reader the ability to filter and sort such comments such that the trollz are minimized. Not KNS.

Everything I've seen indicates that KNS' business model is basically as follows: When UT is doing poorly, antagonize UT fans just enough to draw readers and web hits, yet not enough to cause an outright boycott and destruction of their business. When UT is doing well, run them down enough to provide a patina of objectivity over their Big Orange header.

Did I miss anything?
