Tennessee’s Derek Reese was a last-minute subtraction from the Rocky Top League summer basketball program. It was for a good reason.
Reese, the sophomore wing, will play on Puerto Rico’s national team later this month in China.
Reese was impressive enough last summer on Puerto Rico’s U19 team to merit selection on the team headed to the FIBA Stankovic Continental Champions Cup June 27 through July 9 in Lanzhou.
Reese’s grandparents were born in Puerto Rico. The Orlando, Fla., native is already training with the team.
“This is the chance of a lifetime,’’ Reese said in a UT release.
Reese averaged 3.7 points and 2.1 rebounds for the Vols as a freshman.
