New UT football facility to be named Anderson Training Center

CHATTANOOGA — UT’s recently finished $45 million football training center will be named the Anderson Training Center.

The new name will be in honor of the family of donor and trustee Charlie Anderson, who along with his wife, parents, brother and sister-in-law gifted $8 million to the facility.

The Advancement and Public Affairs Committee of the board of trustees approved the measure this morning at the UT-Chattanooga campus. The name is expected to be approved, along with five other new building names on the Knoxville campus, at the full board meeting this afternoon.

“We know that the most success the university had in football was during the ’90s and that’s when they opened that football facility. So it was time to reinvest. It’s a beautiful, wonderful facility that will hopefully recruit great athletes,” Anderson said during the trustees’ winter board meeting on the UT-Chattanooga campus. Anderson has also made gifts to the business college.

“We talk about athletics being the front porch of the university because it’s so visible,” he added. “When we have a great athletics program it translates into success in other parts of the university.”

In 2010, Anderson sent an email to then-Athletic Director Mike Hamilton briefly withholding his family’s the gift because Hamilton turned down then-coach Derek Dooley’s request to make changes to the weight room and hire on a hand-picked consultant from Louisiana Tech University.

The Anderson family “wasn’t comfortable” that the project was on track.

Ultimately, Dooley got his way, and the State Building Commission approved the changes, which were expected to add approximately 10,400 square feet and up to $9 million in cost. Dooley, of course, had already been fired when the building opened last year.

More details as they develop online and in Saturday’s News Sentinel.

UT now has the best training center in all of college football. With all the negative in the past few years this center is the begining of geting the team back on top in the SEC. Once the recruits see this center along with the positive engery that is presented by Coach Jones and his staff, I believe that he will get the recruits that are needed to begin the "rise to the top" process. All Vol fans should be proud of this "AWESOME" training center..

Wish they had told Dools back then to leave when he acted out on this. Thanks to the Anderson family for their generosity.

don't straddle the fence, Agent.

UT has Peyton Manning Pass, Philip Fulmer Way...etc. They should now find a boat ramp and name it after Derek Dooley because it will lead you straight to the bottom. I like the suggestion on Basilio that they should rename Stokely the Dooley Athletics Center about 5 minutes before they blow it up.

Tweedle dee and tweedle dumb.

Does 8-foot ceilings in a room full of workout equipment and football size people look STATE-OF-THE-ART to you? Does 3-foot hall-ways look STATE-OF-THE-ART TO YOU? Does a relatively small theater room look STATE-OF-THE-ART to you? How does the Peyton Manning Museum make the players better? Do you think of Shakespeare's Hamlet when you view this thing for the first time...you know...smell a rat?

I am not making evaluations here - I'm just asking simple questions.

If I understand the last part of the article above (which isn't written very clearly), Anderson agreed with Dooley and disagreed with Hamilton. Thus, we owe Dooley his due thanks for the facility as it turned out. Though I do understand that some haters still gotta hate...
