Tennessee lost 7-3 to Virginia Tech Sunday on the last day of the USA Baseball Irish Classic in Cary, N.C.
Freshman Aaron Quillen (0-1)pitched six innings, allowed eight hits, and gave up four runs (two earned). Sophomore third baseman Will Maddox led Tennessee from the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
The game was scoreless heading into the third inning when Virginia Tech (11-2) exploded with four runs to take a lead that they would never relinquish.
The Vols chipped away with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to make it 4-3, but the Hokies added another big inning with a three-run eighth.
After the game, Tennessee coach Dave Serrano assessed where his team is at this point.
“We need to find an identity as a baseball team,” Serrano said. “Right now we are a bunch of good kids that aren’t playing together as a baseball team and that bothers me because this has the opportunity to be a good team.”
Despite the team’s up-and-down play, Maddox has a six-game hit streak during which he has a .520 batting average with seven RBIs and five runs scored.
The Vols (4-7) play again on Tuesday when they host Belmont at Lindsey Nelson Stadium at 6 p.m.

of those 7 losses, 4 were 1 run games... so it's not as bad as it seems. At least 3 were to ranked teams as well.

Exactly. And it's not as if they've played a bunch of mediocre teams either.
I like Coach Serrano setting up this tough non-conference schedule to start the year. Good way to get this young team ready for SEC play.
Too much talent on this team...it'll come.
Go BaseVOLS!
