Lady Vols have new location to view selection show

Tennessee will be watching the NCAA women’s basketball tournament selection show from a different location on Monday.

The Lady Vols will gather in the East Club at Neyland Stadium for dinner and a bracket. The 64-team field will be unveiled on ESPN from 7-8 p.m.

Pat Summitt’s home had been the standard gathering place for this event. She stepped down as head coach last April after 38 seasons and became head coach emeritus for the program.

The latest ESPN bracketology projects Tennessee (24-7) as a No. 3 seed in the Norfolk (Va.) Regional. First- and second-round games will take place at Thompson-Boling Arena beginning with an opening-round doubleheader on March 23. The first game will start at 11 a.m. while the second game will be at 1:30 p.m. The winners meet in the second round at 7 p.m. March 25.

The NCAA tournament bid will be Tennessee’s 32nd. UT is the only program to appear in every NCAA women’s tournament.

Tournament tickets are on sale at UTTix.com. Tickets also may be purchased at the ticket office, located in the arena’s northwest corner directly off Phillip Fulmer Way, or by calling 865-656-1200 or 1-800-332-8657.

Spani All-Tournament: A career performance by Taber Spani earned UT’s senior forward a spot on the SEC’s all-tournament team.

Spani scored a career-high 33 points in a 66-62 semifinal loss to Texas A&M last Saturday at Gwinnett Arena, reaching the 1,000-point career milestone in the process. She shot 11-for-13 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Spani also hit a career-high five 3-pointers and grabbed eight rebounds.

In Tennessee’s tournament opener, Spani scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 82-73 quarterfinal win over Florida.

The other all-tournament honorees were Kelsey Bone, Kristi Bellock and Courtney Walker of tournament champion Texas A&M and Kentucky’s A’dia Mathies. Bone was the tournament’s most valuable player.

Have the Lady Vols ever been a 4 seed before? They should be a 3, but a 4 is very possible given the way they played in the last three games.

I had forgotten that. I thought that this would be the LV's lowest seed ever. They really blew it late, though. Before those last three games, I was sure that they would get a 2.

Can't agree that they really blew it late. Short handed team that got tired. Think of A&M withour Bone or KY with Mathias. That is kinda what Lady Vols without Izzy are. This group had a great year IMHO. Need great shooting and few turnovers to progress in tourney. Like the 3 seed. The 4 pits you against a one earlier.

This team is a solid 3 seed. Remember they were a missed layup from tying Texas A&M and forcing overtime. Had they won the tournament they would have been an easy 2 seed.

The tournament committee will look at their tough as usual schedule, their regular season championship and how well they played this season despite the injuries and inexperience.

Go Lady Vols!

I started to say that Izzy's injury had nothing to do with Massengale being unable to guard her own shadow, but it might. When someone goes past the statue that is Massengale and Izzy is back there to block the shot, it does help significantly. So, even though I have to give you that, I would not compare her to Bone or Mathias. She is nothing like the offensive threat those two are. Additionally, even though Izzy could have picked up some of those many, many missed shots by Simmons, Burdick and Williams, it is doubtful that she could have made enough put backs to make a difference (I admit it would not have taken much, though. Most importantly, she would have been unable to do anything about the incredibly sloppy, careless, and stupid ball handling and passing. I think that they went one on one so much becaue Holly was afraid to have them pass the ball.

Thank you for your insightful, upbeat post. I don't think you left anything out on rag on the Lady Vols list. Since you are an "Oldster" I will remain respectful as much as possible. Think you went lil over the top on criticism. Notice I didn't say it wasn't founded. Defense and rebounding win championships combined with smart play.

Wow. You do know we are a really good, really young, really short bench team right. If watching them play causes you this much angst I'm not sure it is worth it for you.
Not saying their perfect at all. Each of the players will have assignments for the summer. Their weaknesses will be pointed out in stark detail no doubt. But other than having them drawn and quartered I'm not sure what would make you happy.

You said yourself that it wouldn't have taken much from Izzy to make a difference in the outcome of the A&M game at least. They didn't need her to score or dominate like A&M needed Bone or UK needed Mathis, they just needed her instead of somebody who is, like Nia Moore, not yet a solid SEC post player or somebody who isn't a real post at all like, well, darned near everybody ELSE on the roster right now. A couple of defensive rebounds and outlet passes leading to open-court layups and a couple of extra offensive rebounds for put-backs or just another possession or two and a block or two results in a solid LV WIN! The difference between winning and losing between evenly-matched teams is vanishingly small even if the actual final score wouldn't seem to indicate that.

Just a guess, but Holly's house probably isn't NEARLY as large or nice as Pat's. Besides, nearly every one of these selection viewing parties you see are in the gym, locker room, or media room at the school and very few in somebody's house.

Rational? Not so. Pat stayed away the night of A & M victory so it would zHolly's alone if lady Vols won. Pat is going to stay out of viewing as Holly and staff keep everybody focused. Players will have opportunity with rounds one and two ,if they get that far, at the Tommy Bowl with Coach Summitt in attendance most likely. Not her place to have the viewing there unless she offered or Holly asks. Otherwise the picture and guard have changed.

And what exactly does any of that have to do with a person's right to state an opinion? That goes for YOUR right to state one and OUR right to disagree with it. None of those qualifications have anything to do with sports knowledge or being good company or even being a good person. If you think they do and that you are entitled to any special consideration because you either excel in those areas or imply that we don't, you may be in the wrong place.

I too think Nia should have gotten more PT before the injury rash set in. I respect Holly as a coach, so I won't presume to guess why it didn't seem to be a priority to her to develop Nia and Jasmine Phillips before the team HAD to have some other contributors in their positions. I can only guess that they haven't done enough in practice to convince the staff that they could do any good if they gave them significant game time.
