KNOXVILLE, Tennessee -- Butch Jones landed the biggest player of his young tenure Thursday morning when five-star running back Jalen Hurd verbally committed to the Vols.

Hurd announced his decision on Twitter, just as the Vols were preparing to start practice Thursday morning, and the news quickly reverberated through the team's indoor practice facility.

And the commitment train is picking up steam. Throw another shovel of coal in the boiler. Good news for Vol nation. Go CBJ and staff, keep it going and Go Big Orange.

I think CBJ did an awesome job landing a top 20 class his first year, considering 3 years in a row of losing records and not more than 7 wins in a season the last five years. To have come in behind that and even gotten in the top 3 for some of the guys we were in the top 3 for, I think brighter days are ahead. Good job to the staff on landing Jalen Hurd. For the first time since Fulmer was fired, I'm looking forward to football season.

This is SO GREAT! I kept reading where Bama and Ohio State were at the front of the pack. It's been a long time since we've had this many "VERY HIGH QUALITY COMMITMENTS" at such an EARLY stage (man, it's mid-March!). Go BUTch!

Who will be next? Kelly and Hurd will be tweeting them all...

Berry's, you know you want to go to UT. Why wait- come on in, the water's fine.

I have been quick to caution the overly pie in the sky fans about not getting too crazy. This commitment is very important for the vols. With the number of former vols sons in the mix this year it could prove to be a big year. If the vols could get Bates and the Berry twins it would be a really solid base to build on. Keep up the work coach! GBO

We don't know if CBJ can coach in the SEC but he can dang well recruit in the SEC!!! WOW!!!! It's only a matter of time my Vol friends. TN will be back on top. And by the way the Butchinator is recruiting; it's looks sooner than later! GBO

StoneJack,

Exactly. None of this was supposed to happen since the whiners and naysayers proclaimed CBJ couldn't do anything. Well, seems in such a short time, he is making some noise.

We know it has to show up on the field and that with the first losing game, out will crawl the "I told you so" idiots.

We are going to have to appreciate the steps to be taken to get the Vols back on track and the mature Vol fans will be part of that.

Anyway, this is very good news. More will follow.

Great news! Coach Jones and staff are getting it done. This will get attention from other highly rated players. I know it's only March, but considering the way things have been for the last few years at U.T, not only is the end of the tunnel in sight, it,s getting close as well. If things continue as they are now, there's no reason the next recruiting class can't be rated in the top ten. Also, this will provide some patience for us all. G.B.O.!!!

Woooooo. Holy COW!!! Go Coach Jones and staff as well as these fine young men coming to UT! It won't be long before UT is back up top knocking off the Alabubba's, Gator's, and Tigers!!! YES, YES, YES!!! Go Big Orange and keep on eating that tomoato soup!!!!

Nice, nice pick up. I have yet to understand the Miserables who have constantly downed CBJ at every opportunity and continue to bring up everything from former HC DD, to the conspiracies of the UT administration trying to ruin UT athletics, football included. For one, and most importantly, this is the bell cow of the university. Do you not understand, which I believe those involved in UT athletics do, this is a business first and without success comes failure...and jobs.

Despite all of the negative aspects surrounding the UT football program; coaching turnovers, losses, player departures and legal mishaps, no bowls etc., all this within a 6 year time frame with the added element in lack of support and negativity from you the Legions has made this program as a whole unpopular and unattractive. All CBJ and staff have done is ignore all of this, exercised energy and a new found sense of pride and optimism (what would you have them be - doom and gloom) along with exceptional promotion of the UT brand (tradition, history, past players)with such success at this early stage of the game....well, all I can say to you is, stick it!

Regarding the "Miserables" you referred to aren't worth the time or effort to understand. As we all know, some people are totally unable to find good in anything, and therefore are, as you said "Miserable". Those of us who have followed Tennessee for more than a few decades have seen the good years, the great years, and the bad years. But the one constant thing through the years is Tennessee football ALWAYS comes back. That is why Tennessee football is one of the greatest college football programs of all time. The foundation C.B.J. and staff are building today, will give us all something we can all be proud of tomorrow, and tomorrow is coming soon. G.B.O.!!!

We need to get some 5-star big uglies signed up... Can't win the SEC without a dominate D-Line.

Vonn Bell stated "he wanted to go where he could win championshps". Vonn Bell is all about Vonn Bell so I see him as no huge loss.

I don't think there's any reason to second guess young Bell. He did what he thought was the best for him. Don't hate on him, admire him for using his judgement to do what was best for Vonn Bell. If you want to say anything about kicking anyone, say it about Dooley. He's the one, in my opinion that, screwed the pooch on Vonn Bell becoming a VOL. Great pickup Coach Butch! Keep it up!

Yep, that's right. Good post. Dooley missed out on a lot of good players from Tennessee. I'm really liking what I'm seeing from Coach Jones and company. Things are looking up for a change.

Have seen Jalen Hurd play quite a few games and saw him go against Jalen Reeves Maybin this past season. This will be great to see these two playing on the same team, along with the other super stars who have committed and hopefully will commit. Hope the Berry brothers come aboard also, as brother Eric is one of the most loved to ever play for UT. Hopefully Dillon Bates will also come aboard, as alot of us older fans loved his dad Bill as well. These all are top players along with the younger Jenkins and some of the others Coach Jones is recruiting. This is the first time I have seen all good comments with the exception of 45 rev., who is a peabody fan posing as a VFL. Go Big Orange.

when i heard the news Vonn Bell crossed my mind too, oh well i think if /when the Berry twins commit it wont matter as much , i watched the you tube video on this kid and he looks like a natural and skinny for 230 lbs. . i could easily see him in the backfield at 250 lbs . i read an article written by a recruiting analyst and he described Hurd as the kind of back that defenses will get tired of tackling after 15 or 20 carries , something the vols have sorely missed for a while . cant wait to see him on the field .
